This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. The present work considers analysis of adhesive friction of rough surfaces using n- point asperity concept for statistical definition of surface roughness features, and accurate finite element analysis of elastic-plastic deformation of single asperity contact. Well defined adhesion index and plasticity index are used to study the prospective contact situations arising out of variation in material properties and surface roughness features. From the present results it is possible to locate the combinations of adhesion index and plasticity index that may yield very low coefficient of friction. Thus suitable choice of surface and material parameters for the contact of two rough surfaces can be made in order to minimize friction typically at low load and micro scale roughness situations.

Adhesive friction based on finite element study and n-point asperity model

This chapter deals with the fractal dimension modeling in CNC end milling operation. Milling operations are carried out for three different materials viz. mild steel, brass and aluminium work-pieces for different combinations of spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut. The generated surfaces are measured with Talysurf instrument and analyzed to get fractal dimension. The experimental results are further processed to model fractal dimension using response surface methodology (RSM). It is seen that spindle speed and depth of cut are the significant factors affecting fractal dimension for mild steel. For brass material, the significant factors are spindle speed and feed rate but for aluminium the significant factor is depth of cut. In general, for mild steel and brass, with increase in spindle speed, D increases. Comparing the developed response surface models, it is concluded that the models are material specific and the tool-work-piece material combination plays a vital role in fractal dimension of the generated surface profile.

Fractal Analysis in CNC End Milling

Carbon black is the most promising filler material in polymer industries for fabrication of composite materials because of its unique properties and strength. In the present study, carbon black particles are developed from orange peel particulates (OPP) by pyrolysis approach at different carbonization temperatures (400oC, 600oC and 800oC). The raw and carbon black OPP materials are used as reinforcement to fabricate epoxy composites that are evaluated for mechanical and morphological properties following ASTM standard. Proximate analysis reveals that the amount of carbon content increases significantly (up to 74.42 % at 800°C) due to the carbonization. Tensile and flexural strength increase with increasing carbonization temperature and maximum value is observed in case of 800°C. SEM observations indicate good interfacial bonding between filler and matrix materials. Weight of the composite is reduced due to carbonization of raw material. TGA study of carbon black material reveals that the thermal stability increases with increase in carbonization temperature.
