Non-covalent interactions play a crucial role in (supramolecular) chemistry and much of biology. Supramolecular forces can indeed determine the structure and function of a host–guest system. Many sensors, for example, rely on reversible bonding with the analyte. Natural machineries also often have a significant non-covalent component (e.g. protein folding, recognition) and rational interference in such ‘living’ devices can have pharmacological implications. For the rational design/tweaking of supramolecular systems it is helpful to know what supramolecular synthons are available and to understand the forces that make these synthons stick to one another. In this review we focus on σ-hole and π-hole interactions. A σ- or π-hole can be seen as positive electrostatic potential on unpopulated σ* or π(*) orbitals, which are thus capable of interacting with some electron dense region. A σ-hole is typically located along the vector of a covalent bond such as XH or XHlg (X=any atom, Hlg=halogen), which are respectively known as hydrogen and halogen bond donors. Only recently it has become clear that σ-holes can also be found along a covalent bond with chalcogen (XCh), pnictogen (XPn) and tetrel (XTr) atoms. Interactions with these synthons are named chalcogen, pnigtogen and tetrel interactions. A π-hole is typically located perpendicular to the molecular framework of diatomic π-systems such as carbonyls, or conjugated π-systems such as hexafluorobenzene. Anion–π and lone-pair–π interactions are examples of named π-hole interactions between conjugated π-systems and anions or lone-pair electrons respectively. While the above nomenclature indicates the distinct chemical identity of the supramolecular synthon acting as Lewis acid, it is worth stressing that the underlying physics is very similar. This implies that interactions that are now not so well-established might turn out to be equally useful as conventional hydrogen and halogen bonds. In summary, we describe the physical nature of σ- and π-hole interactions, present a selection of inquiries that utilise σ- and π-holes, and give an overview of analyses of structural databases (CSD/PDB) that demonstrate how prevalent these interactions already are in solid-state structures.

The Bright Future of Unconventional σ/π-Hole Interactions

MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations were carried out on complexes of ZH4, ZFH3 and ZF4 (Z = C, Si and Ge) molecules with HCN, LiCN and Cl− species acting as Lewis bases through nitrogen centre or chlorine ion. Z-Atoms in these complexes usually act as Lewis acid centres forming σ-hole bonds with Lewis bases. Such noncovalent interactions may adopt a name of tetrel bonds since they concern the elements of the group IV. There are exceptions for complexes of CH4 and CF4, as well as for the F4Si⋯NCH complex where the tetrel bond is not formed. The energetic and geometrical parameters of the complexes were analyzed and numerous correlations between them were found. The Quantum Theory of ‘Atoms in Molecules’ and Natural Bonds Orbital (NBO) method used here should deepen the understanding of the nature of the tetrel bond. An analysis of the electrostatic potential surfaces of the interacting species is performed. The electron charge redistribution, being the result of the tetrel bond formation, is the same as that of the SN2 reaction. The energetic and geometrical parameters of the complexes analyzed here correspond to different stages of the SN2 process.

Tetrel bond–σ-hole bond as a preliminary stage of the SN2 reaction

In this review, we provide a consistent description of noncovalent interactions, covering most groups of the Periodic Table. Different types of bonds are discussed using their trivial names. Moreover, the new name “Spodium bonds” is proposed for group 12 since noncovalent interactions involving this group of elements as electron acceptors have not yet been named. Excluding hydrogen bonds, the following noncovalent interactions will be discussed: alkali, alkaline earth, regium, spodium, triel, tetrel, pnictogen, chalcogen, halogen, and aerogen, which almost covers the Periodic Table entirely. Other interactions, such as orthogonal interactions and π-π stacking, will also be considered. Research and applications of σ-hole and π-hole interactions involving the p-block element is growing exponentially. The important applications include supramolecular chemistry, crystal engineering, catalysis, enzymatic chemistry molecular machines, membrane ion transport, etc. Despite the fact that this review is not intended to be comprehensive, a number of representative works for each type of interaction is provided. The possibility of modeling the dissociation energies of the complexes using different models (HSAB, ECW, Alkorta-Legon) was analyzed. Finally, the extension of Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rules to noncovalent is proposed.

Not Only Hydrogen Bonds: Other Noncovalent Interactions

Tetrel (Tr) bonding is first placed into perspective as a σ-hole bonding interaction with atoms of the Tr family. An sp(3) R4Tr unit has four σ-holes with which a Lewis base can form a complex. We then highlight some inspiring crystal structures where Tr bonding is obvious, followed by an account of our own work. We have shown that Tr bonding is ubiquitous in the solid state and we have highlighted that Tr bonding with carbon is possible when C is placed in the appropriate chemical context. We hope that this account serves as an initial guide and source of inspiration for others wishing to exploit this vastly underexplored interaction.

Tetrel bonding interactions at work: Impact on tin and lead coordination compounds

A series of glutarimide derivatives which has two carbonyl coordination sites for intramolecular pentacoordination at silicon with a X1+nSiC3−nO moiety have been synthesised and characterized. The substituent (leaving group) effects on the Si–O bond exchange between the two coordination sites (resembling a pendulum) have been studied by comparison of the differently substituted (X = F, Cl, OTf, Br and I) structures. The activation parameters for the Si–O bond exchange process were measured by NMR and separately computed and are consistent with the strength of Si–O bond coordination and the nature of the leaving group, X. The temperature-dependent 29Si NMR spectroscopy is supported by X-ray crystallography and shows that the tetrahedral reactant is converted into pentacoordinate intermediates by intramolecular O–Si association followed by reversion to a tetrahedral geometry by Si–X dissociation. The two association/dissociation patterns offer a model for nucleophilic substitution at a silicon atom. A continuum of structures on the SN2 reaction profile from the glutarimide derivatives correlates reasonably well with the structural data obtained from derivatives of lactams, diketopiperazines and quinolones.
