Journal ArticleDOI
A short physical performance battery assessing lower extremity function: association with self-reported disability and prediction of mortality and nursing home admission.
Jack M. Guralnik,Eleanor M. Simonsick,Luigi Ferrucci,Robert J. Glynn,Lisa F. Berkman,Dan G. Blazer,Paul A. Scherr,Robert B. Wallace +7 more
TL;DR: Evidence is presented that performance measures can validly characterize older persons across a broad spectrum of lower extremity function and that performance and self-report measures may complement each other in providing useful information about functional status.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of conjugated equine estrogen in postmenopausal women with hysterectomy: the Women's Health Initiative randomized controlled trial
Garnet L. Anderson,Marian C. Limacher,Annlouise R. Assaf,Tamsen Bassford,Shirley A.A. Beresford,Henry R. Black,Denise E. Bonds,Robert L. Brunner,Robert G. Brzyski,Bette J. Caan,Rowan T. Chlebowski,J. David Curb,Margery Gass,Jennifer Hays,Gerardo Heiss,Susan L. Hendrix,Barbara V. Howard,Judith Hsia,F. Allan Hubbell,Rebecca D. Jackson,Karen C. Johnson,Howard L. Judd,Jane Morley Kotchen,Lewis H. Kuller,Andrea Z. LaCroix,Dorothy S. Lane,Robert Langer,Norman L. Lasser,Cora E. Lewis,JoAnn E. Manson,Karen L. Margolis,Judith K. Ockene,Mary Jo O'Sullivan,Lawrence S. Phillips,Ross L. Prentice,Cheryl Ritenbaugh,John A Robbins,Jacques E. Rossouw,Gloria E. Sarto,Marcia L. Stefanick,Linda Van Horn,Jean Wactawski-Wende,Robert B. Wallace,Sylvia Wassertheil-Smoller +43 more
TL;DR: The use of conjugated equine estrogen (CEE) increases the risk of stroke, decreases therisk of hip fracture, and does not affect CHD incidence in postmenopausal women with prior hysterectomy over an average of 6.8 years, indicating no overall benefit.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lower-Extremity Function in Persons over the Age of 70 Years as a Predictor of Subsequent Disability
TL;DR: Among nondisabled older persons living in the community, objective measures of lower-extremity function were highly predictive of subsequent disability.
Journal ArticleDOI
Lower Extremity Function and Subsequent Disability Consistency Across Studies, Predictive Models, and Value of Gait Speed Alone Compared With the Short Physical Performance Battery
Jack M. Guralnik,Luigi Ferrucci,Carl F. Pieper,Suzanne G. Leveille,Kyriakos S. Markides,Glenn V. Ostir,Stephanie A. Studenski,Lisa F. Berkman,Robert B. Wallace +8 more
TL;DR: Performance tests of lower extremity function accurately predict disability across diverse populations and Equations derived from models using both the summary score and the gait speed alone allow for the estimation of risk of disability in community-dwelling populations and provide valuable information for estimating sample size for clinical trials of disability prevention.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of alendronate on risk of fracture in women with low bone density but without vertebral fractures: results from the Fracture Intervention Trial.
Steven R. Cummings,Dennis M. Black,Desmond E. Thompson,William B. Applegate,Elizabeth Barrett-Connor,Thomas Musliner,Lisa Palermo,Ronald J. Prineas,Susan M. Rubin,Jean Scott,Thomas M. Vogt,Robert B. Wallace,A. John Yates,Andrea Z. LaCroix +13 more
TL;DR: In women with low BMD but without vertebral fractures, 4 years of alendronate safely increased BMD and decreased the risk of first vertebral deformity.
