Gerhard Findenegg (1938-2019)

TL;DR: On 12 December 2019, our colleague and friend Professor Dr. Gerhard H. Findenegg (cf. Figure 1) passed away after just having completed the eighty-first year of his life.
Journal ArticleDOI

Finite-size-scaling derivation of the Widom critical-exponent relation for surface tension.

TL;DR: By introducing finite-size-scaling corrections into the Kelvin equation for the location of the shifted first-order phase boundary (condensation line) for a fluid confined between two parallel plates, the critical exponent μ is shown to satisfy the Widom exponent relation μ=2-α-v.
Journal ArticleDOI

Anomalous freezing and melting behaviour of capillary confined CO2

TL;DR: In this paper, a positron annihilation study of the liquid phase boundary for CO2 confined in nanometer pores of VYCOR glass is presented, and it is shown that CO2 remains liquid in the pores far below the bulk freezing temperature and there is a pronounced hysteresis between freezing and melting compared to that seen at the gas-liquid boundary.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pairwise correlations and wetting transitions at a solid-gas interface

TL;DR: In this article, the authors study the density-density correlation function for Sullivan's model of a gas adsorbed on a solid substrate and show that when a thick film of liquid density is adorbed at the substrate, long-ranged transverse (parallel to the surface) correlations develop at the edge of the film where the density profile is similar to that of a liquid-gas interface.
