Surface and Colloid Science

The mean size of the gold (Au) core in the synthesis of dodecanethiolate-stabilized Au cluster compounds can be finely adjusted by choice of the Au:dodecanethiolate ratio and the temperature and rate at which the reduction is conducted. The Au clusters have been examined with a large number of independent analytical tools, producing a remarkably consistent picture of these materials. Average cluster and core dimensions, as ascertained by 1H NMR line broadening, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and thermogravimetric analysis, vary between diameters of 1.5 and 5.2 nm (∼110−4800 Au atoms/core). The electronic properties of the Au core were examined by UV/vis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy; the core appears to remain largely metallic in nature even at the smallest core sizes examined. Alkanethiolate Gold Cluster Molecules with Core Diameters from 1.5 to 5.2 nm: Core and Monolayer Properties as a Function of Core Size

In order to enable optical systems to operate with a high degree of compactness and reliability it is necessary to combine large number of optical functions in small monolithic structures. A development, somewhat reminiscent of that that took place in Integrated Electronics, is now beginning to take place in optics. The initial challenge in this emerging field, known appropriately as "Integrated Optics", is to demonstrate the possibility of performing basic optical functions such as light generation, coupling, modulation, and guiding in Integrated Optical configurations. The talk will review the main theoretical and experimental developments to date in Integrated Optics. Specific topics to be discussed include: Material considerations, guiding mechanisms, modulation, coupling and mode losses. The fabrication and applications of periodic thin film structures will be discussed.

Methods for Selective Modifications of Cyclodextrins.

Several different cyclodextrinthiol derivatives have been immobilized on gold surfaces through a chemisorption process to form films which exhibit significantly different features. Three monothiolated cyclodextrin derivatives with different spacers between the cyclodextrin cavity and the thiol group and a mixture of multithiolated cyclodextrins were synthesized and characterized. Chemisorption of these compounds onto gold surfaces gave films which were investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, time-of-flight mass spectrometry, contact angle measurements, plasmon surface polariton (PSP) spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. It was found that the chemical structure of each cyclodextrin derivative had a strong influence on the molecular architecture in the resulting films, and in particular on the orientation of the cyclodextrin torus. Models were developed to describe the molecular arrangement in the films.

Electrochemical investigation of novel polymerizable thiophene/ferrocene conjugates

Charge carrier photogeneration in sandwich cells containing Lagmuir-Blodgett multiassemblies of tetramethoxy-tetra(octyloxy)phthalocyaninatopolysiloxane (PcPS) has been investigated with respect to the spectral response and light flux dependence. The films were contacted using Au or Pt bottom electrodes and Bi or Al top electrodes. The gain factors showed the largest value, close to 1%, at 325nm. The DC current-voltage curves of the cells with Al-electrode show rectification behavior. The rectification ratio (forward- vers. reverse-bias current) was typically higher than 40 for the ±0.5V applied. Under illumination, the devices worked like photocells giving open circuit voltage ∼0.25V (Al-electrode negative) and a fill factor value 0.43.
