Experience and Educationis the best concise statement on education ever published by John Dewey, the man acknowledged to be the pre-eminent educational theorist of the twentieth century. Written more than two decades after Democracy and Education(Dewey's most comprehensive statement of his position in educational philosophy), this book demonstrates how Dewey reformulated his ideas as a result of his intervening experience with the progressive schools and in the light of the criticisms his theories had received. Analysing both "traditional" and "progressive" education, Dr. Dewey here insists that neither the old nor the new education is adequate and that each is miseducative because neither of them applies the principles of a carefully developed philosophy of experience. Many pages of this volume illustrate Dr. Dewey's ideas for a philosophy of experience and its relation to education. He particularly urges that all teachers and educators looking for a new movement in education should think in terms of the deeped and larger issues of education rather than in terms of some divisive "ism" about education, even such an "ism" as "progressivism." His philosophy, here expressed in its most essential, most readable form, predicates an American educational system that respects all sources of experience, on that offers a true learning situation that is both historical and social, both orderly and dynamic.

Despite the recent increase of research into coaching, the essential social and cultural nature of the process has received little attention The purpose of this paper is to suggest a framework for undertaking a social analysis of coaching Specifically, the case is made for analyzing coaching using three interrelated concepts-role, interaction, and power-in order to critically interrogate coaching practice We argue that, while not exhaustive, such an analysis can reveal the importance of key, but often underplayed, components of the coaching process, including social and cultural contexts, personal experiences, personal philosophies, professional practice, and the ways in which they are interconnected The paper is thus grounded in the belief that recognizing and understanding the social sphere of the coaching process is a necessary step toward understanding coaching practice and using that understanding to support coaches more effectively

Understanding the coaching process: A framework for social analysis

Background: Coaching, as related to improving others' sporting experience and/or performance, at any level is unquestionably a complex business. General agreement exists that the dynamic and intricate nature of the work in teaching, guiding and managing others in this regard precludes any paint-by-number plans that practitioners can easily follow. Consequently, the need to coach holistically, in terms of viewing coaching as a complex social process, which involves a myriad of interacting variables, has increasingly gained recognition. Teaching coaches to coach holistically: can Problem-Based Learning (PBL) help?

The purpose of this study was to analyze the coaching behaviours of top‐level professional English soccer coaches within the practice environment. The Arizona State University Observation Instrument (ASUOI) was used to compile data on four coaches during three phases of a given season. The results indicated that the categories of ‘pre‐instruction’, ‘concurrent instruction’, and ‘post instruction’ represented 54.45 per cent of all the recorded behavioural intervals. In addition, the data indicated a substantial praise to scold ratio (approximately 23:1). While ‘praise’ represented 15.44 per cent of the total coded behaviours, ‘scold’ accounted for only 0.67 per cent. The overall trends and variations in coaching behaviour between the observed coaches are primarily discussed in relation to existing sociology research.

Understanding Power and the Coach’s Role in Professional English Soccer: A Preliminary Investigation of Coach Behaviour

A systematic observation of professional top-level youth soccer coaches.

Background: Despite criticism of its positive claims being largely unfounded and ill-clarified, the concept of mentoring has come into common use within sports coaching. Purpose: In an attempt to address these concerns, the purpose of this paper is to take better account of the researched evidence on mentoring in general before providing some guidelines of good practice that could realistically be applied to sports coaching. Literature review: In terms of the paper's content, a discussion surrounding definitions and conceptualisations is initially embarked upon. This is followed by a review of mentoring literature from other academic and professional fields, namely nursing, education and business, where the practice has been more widely researched, established and used. Current ‘models’ of mentoring in sports coaching are then examined.
