TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a conceptual model hypothesizing the relationships among physical activity, motor skill competence, perceived motor skills competence, health-related physical fitness, and obesity.
Abstract: Although significant attention has been paid to promoting the importance of physical activity in children, adolescents, and adults, we do not currently understand how to promote sustained physical activity levels throughout the lifespan. We contend that previous research has failed to consider the dynamic and synergistic role that motor skill competence plays in the initiation, maintenance, or decline of physical activity and how this role might change across developmental time. In this article, we present a conceptual model hypothesizing the relationships among physical activity, motor skill competence, perceived motor skill competence, health-related physical fitness, and obesity. We contend that the development of motor skill competence is a primary underlying mechanism that promotes engagement in physical activity.

TL;DR: This article examined the influence of experience on coaching practice and found that it is experience and the observation of other coaches that remain the primary sources of knowledge for coaches, despite this, coach education and continuing professional development fail to draw effectively on this experience.
Abstract: Research over the last decade has demonstrated that it is experience and the observation of other coaches that remain the primary sources of knowledge for coaches. Despite this, coach education and continuing professional development fail to draw effectively on this experience. Using the work of Pierre Bourdieu, this paper attempts to understand how the “art of coaching” can be characterized as structured improvisation and how experience is crucial to structuring coaching practice. An examination of current coach education and assessment demonstrates that coaching practice viewed as a composite of knowledge has not specifically addressed the pervasive influence of experience on coaching practice. Drawing on experiences from the educational field, we examine how coach education and continuing professional development can utilize mentoring and critical reflection to situate learning in the practical experience of coaching.

TL;DR: In this article, a conceptual model of physical activity promotion that is based on the unique developmental, psycho-1ogical, and behavioral characteristics of children is proposed, which adopts a social-ecological framework by acknowledging the input of various personal, social and environmental influences on children's physical activity.
Abstract: Many theoretical models have been proposed to understand the factors influencing physical activity behavior; however. few have been specifically developed for children. The purpose of this paper is to describe a conceptual model of physical activity promotion that is based on the unique developmental, psycho1ogical, and behavioral characteristics children. The current model adopts a social-ecological framework by acknowledging the input of various personal, social, and environmental influences on children's physical activity. The model also unites constructs from competing theoretical frameworks to provide a conceptual basis for comparing various models. It is hoped that this model will serve as a bridge between theory and practice and will enhance the promotion of physical activity among children.

TL;DR: Kolnes' concept of heterosexuality as an organizing principle in women's sport provides the foundation for understanding the social construction of females in sport as discussed by the authors, and women who appear heterosexually feminine are privileged over women perceived as masculine.
Abstract: More women than ever before are panicipating in a diverse array of sports. However, at the same time, this popularity accentuates the femininity of these sportswomen, protecting the “image” of women's sports. The underlying message is that athleticism and femininity contrddictory, and females have to go out of their way to show that they can be athletic and be socially accepted. Kolnes' (1995) concept of heterosexuality as an organizing principle in women's sport provides the foundation for understanding the social construction of females in sport. Generally, women who appear heterosexually feminine are privileged over women perceived as masculine. Consequences of nonconformity to hegemonic femininity in sport often include sexist and heterosexist ddiscrimination. This leads many sportswomen to emphasize feminine characteristics to avoid prejudice and discrimination. However, females perceived as too feminine are then sexualized and trivialized, leaving women to carefully balance athleticism with hegemoni...
