An updated version of a 1985 tutorial paper on active filters using operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) is presented. The integrated circuit issues involved in active filters (using CMOS transconductance amplifiers) and the progress in this field in the last 15 years is addressed. CMOS transconductance amplifiers, nonlinearised and linearised, as well as frequency limitations and dynamic range considerations are reviewed. OTA-C filter architectures, current-mode filters, and other potential applications of transconductance amplifiers are discussed.

CMOS transconductance amplifiers, architectures and active filters: a tutorial

This paper presents a comprehensive approach to engineering design optimization exploiting space mapping (SM). The algorithms employ input SM and a new generalization of implicit SM to minimize the misalignment between the coarse and fine models of the optimized object over a region of interest. Output SM ensures the matching of responses and first-order derivatives between the mapped coarse model and the fine model at the current iteration point in the optimization process. We provide theoretical results that show the importance of the explicit use of sensitivity information to the convergence properties of our family of algorithms. Our algorithm is demonstrated on the optimization of a microstrip bandpass filter, a bandpass filter with double-coupled resonators, and a seven-section impedance transformer. A Space-Mapping Framework for Engineering Optimization&#8212;Theory and Implementation

A new method of analog filter design is proposed where nonlinear active components are a natural part of a filter realizing an overall linear transfer function. This approach to design is articulated in the generation of the class of so-called "Exponential State Space" (ESS) filters. An outgrowth of "log filters", ESS filters are created via a mapping on the state space of a linear filter. Specifically, the state variables are equal to simple functions of exponentials or node voltages. The use of exponential, hyperbolic tangent, and hyperbolic sine mappings is shown to produce realizable nodal equations that result in "log", "tanh" and "sinh" filters, respectively. Aspects of interpretation and realization of the transformed state equations are discussed. It is shown that sinh filters are class AB filters, which is an intriguing extension of a concept introduced by Seevinck (1990). The different filter types are compared to an analogous standard transconductance-C filter via simulation of a band-pass filter with a Q of 5. All filters demonstrate tunability over a 100 to 1 range with excellent frequency response stability and accuracy over the tuning range, which extends to 5 MHz. These results and IMD and noise performance are given using both ideal transistors and transistors whose cutoff frequency equals approximately 300 MHz.

Design of analog filters : passive, active RC, and switched capacitor

A linear, fully balanced, voltage-tunable CMOS operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) with large dc gain and wide bandwidth is described. The approach uses a two-differential-pair transconductor with a cross-coupled input stage together with a negative resistance load for compensating the parasitic output resistance of the OTA. Since no additional internal nodes are generated, dc gain enhancement is obtained without bandwidth limitation. SPICE simulations show that total harmonic distortion at 1.42 V/sub p-p/ is less than 1% with dynamic range equal to 66 dB at a power consumption of 2.7 mW from a single 5-V supply. As an example, the OTA is used to design a third-order elliptic lowpass filter in the very-high-frequency range, simulated in a standard 2 /spl mu/m CMOS process (MOSIS). The cutoff frequency of the filter is tunable in the range of 12-50 MHz.

A linear fully balanced CMOS OTA for VHF filtering applications

A discussion is presented of the most important and difficult aspect of the design of fully integrated continuous-time filters: continuous, real-time, on-chip tuning of filter parameters against errors caused by such factors as fabrication tolerances, changes in operating conditions, parasitic effects, and aging. The origins of the errors in filter parameters are pointed out, and the generally adopted methods for automatic error correction are discussed. These methods are a phased-locking loop for tuning of frequency parameters and a magnitude-locking loop for maintaining the transfer characteristic's shape. Guidelines are given to aid the designer in avoiding the most prevalent pitfalls, and an illustrative example is presented which incorporates the ideas and concepts discussed. >

The problem of on-chip automatic tuning in continuous-time integrated filters

A circuit technique for realizing voltage-tunable linear high-frequency CMOS transconductor cells that use two cross-coupled MOS or CMOS transistor pairs operating at saturation is described. The tuning capabilities attained with an adjustable CMOS voltage source are examined. Design trade-offs between linearity and bandwidth are discussed, and a simple operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) example is simulated via SPICE. The simulation results show that the transconductance can be varied by a factor of 8 and that, for a power supply of +or-5 V, the linearity error is less than 0.5% for an input voltage of +or-3.0 V. A cutoff frequency of over 370 MHz is obtained. >
