Biomass chemical looping gasification for syngas production using ilmenite as oxygen carrier in a 1.5 kWth unit

The catalytic performance of Fe–Ni/PG (PG: palygorskite) catalysts pre-calcined and reduced at 500 ◦C for catalytic decomposition of tar derived through rice hull gasification was investigated. The materials were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, hydrogen temperature reduction, and transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that ferrites with spinel structure ((Fe, Ni)3O4) were formed during preparation of bimetallic systems during calcination and reduction of the precursors (Fe–Ni/PG catalysts)
and NiO metal oxide particles were formed over Fe6–Ni9/PG catalyst. The obtained experimental data showed that Fe–Ni/PG catalysts had greater catalytic activity than natural PG. Tar removal using Fe6–Ni9/PG catalyst was as high as Fe10–Ni6/PG catalyst (99.5%). Fe6–Ni9/PG showed greater catalytic activity with greater H2 yield and showed stronger resistance to carbon deposition, attributed to the
presence of NiO nanoparticles. Thus, the addition of nickel and iron oxides played an important role in catalytic cracking of rice hull biomass tar.

A Review on Biomass Gasification: Effect of Main Parameters on Char Generation and Reaction

Biomass has emerged as one of the most promising renewable energy sources that can replace fossil fuels. Many researchers have carried out intensive research work on biomass gasification to evaluate its performance and feasibility to produce high-quality syngas. However, the process remains the problem of tar formation and low efficiency. Recently, novel approaches were developed for biomass utilization. Chemical looping gasification is considered a suitable pathway to produce valuable products from biomass among biomass conversion processes. This review paper provides a significant body of knowledge on the recent developments of the biomass-based chemical looping gasification process. The effects of process parameters have been discussed to provide important insights into the development of novel technology based on chemical looping. The state-of-the-art experimental and simulation/modeling studies and their fundamental assumptions are described in detail. In conclusion, the review paper highlights current research trends, identifying research gaps and opportunities for future applications of biomass-based chemical looping gasification process. The study aims to assist in understanding biomass-based chemical looping gasification and its development through recent research.

Removal of pollution from the chemical looping process: A mini review

The reducing atmosphere of chemical looping conversion (CL) can greatly limit the emission of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) during the heat treatment of polyvinyl chloride plastics waste (PPW). Loading alkali metals and alkaline earth metals (AAEM) on iron ore OC can remove chlorine in situ, reduce HCl corrosion, and further reduce the emission of other harmful chlorine pollutants. In this work, iron ore OC was modified by K, Na, and Ca. The three modified OCs showed good dechlorination and catalytic gasification performances, while the pristine iron ore OC only exhibited weak dechlorination effects. The dechlorination activity of the three OCs was found to decrease in the order K- > Na- > Ca-modified OC. Decreasing the reaction temperature in the range of 750–900 °C and increasing the dechlorination agent loading improved the dechlorination efficiency. The AAEM conversion of K- and Na-modified OCs could reach or approach 100%, while that of Ca-modified OC reached only about 30%. Scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) results showed that the corresponding alkali and alkaline earth metal chlorides were formed on the surface of the OCs during the CL processes.
