The promise of discovering population-specific disease-associated genes in South Asia
Nathan Nakatsuka,Priya Moorjani,Niraj Rai,Biswanath Sarkar,Arti Tandon,Arti Tandon,Nick Patterson,Gandham SriLakshmi Bhavani,Katta M. Girisha,Mohammed S. Mustak,Sudha Srinivasan,Amit Kaushik,Saadi Abdul Vahab,Sujatha Jagadeesh,Kapaettu Satyamoorthy,Lalji Singh,David Reich,David Reich,David Reich,Kumarasamy Thangaraj +19 more
TL;DR: This study assembled genome-wide data from over 2,800 individuals from over 260 distinct South Asian groups to identify 81 unique groups that descend from founder events more extreme than those in Ashkenazi Jews and Finns, which have high rates of recessive disease due to founder events.
Journal ArticleDOI
Analysis of genotype and haplotype effects of ABCB1 (MDR1) polymorphisms in the risk of medically refractory epilepsy in an Indian population.
Saadi Abdul Vahab,Supratim Sen,Nivedita Ravindran,Sridevi Mony,Anila Mathew,Neetha N Vijayan,Geetha Nayak,Nalini Bhaskaranand,Moinak Banerjee,Kapaettu Satyamoorthy +9 more
TL;DR: Results indicate that there was no statistically significant difference between allele and genotype frequencies of refractory and drug responsive epilepsy patients, and the predicted haplotypes frequencies of the three polymorphisms did not showsignificant difference between cases and controls.
Journal ArticleDOI
Simultaneous detection of periodontal pathogens in subgingival plaque and placenta of women with hypertension in pregnancy
TL;DR: In cases with hypertension, periodontal pathogens are present in higher proportion in subgingival plaque and placenta, irrespective of the periodontal disease status.
Journal ArticleDOI
Thiopurine S-methyltransferase alleles, TPMT*2, *3B and *3C, and genotype frequencies in an Indian population
Raju Murugesan,Saadi Abdul Vahab,Satyajit Patra,Rekha Rao,Jyothi Rao,Padmalatha S. Rai,P M Gopinath,Kapaettu Satyamoorthy +7 more
TL;DR: Significant variations in TPMT gene polymorphisms in an Indian population in relation to other human populations are demonstrated and may help to predict both clinical efficacy and drug toxicity of thiopurine drugs.

The promise of disease gene discovery in South Asia
Nathan Nakatsuka,Priya Moorjani,Niraj Rai,Biswanath Sarkar,Arti Tandon,Nick Patterson,Gandham SriLakshmi Bhavani,Katta M. Girisha,Mohammed S. Mustak,Sudha Srinivasan,Amit Kaushik,Saadi Abdul Vahab,Sujatha Jagadeesh,Kapaettu Satyamoorthy,Lalji Singh,David Reich,Kumarasamy Thangaraj +16 more
TL;DR: It is shown that it is possible to localize genes for progressive pseudorheumatoid dysplasia and mucopolysaccharidosis type IVA, two recessive diseases prevalent in South India, using the founder event disease gene mapping approach introduced here.
