The in-situ deep mixing technique has been established as a means to effect columnar inclusions into soft ground to enhance the bearing capacity and reduce settlement. Since the inception of this method, developments in the plant and machinery, as well as associated field techniques, have surpassed the basic understanding of strength developments in high water-content clays admixed with cementing agents.In this paper an attempt is made to identify the critical factors governing the engineering behavior of cement-stabilized clay, which helps not only to control the input of cementing agent to attain strength development with curing time and clay water content, but also to understand the subsequent engineering behavior. It is revealed that the clay-water/cement ratio, $wc/ c$ is the prime parameter for the above purposes .

Clayey soils are usually stiff when they are dry and give up their stiffness as they become saturated. Soft clays are associated with low compressive strength and excessive settlement. This reduction in strength due to moisture leads to severe damages to buildings and foundations. The soil behavior can be a challenge to the designer build infrastructure plans to on clay deposits. The damage due to the expansive soils every year is expected to be $1 billion in the USA, £150 million in the UK, and many billions of pounds worldwide. The damages associated with expansive soils are not because of the lack of inadequate engineering solutions but to the failure to identify the existence and magnitude of expansion of these soils in the early stage of project planning. One of the methods for soil improvement is that the problematic soil is replaced by suitable soil. The high cost involved in this method has led researchers to identify alternative methods, and soil stabilization with different additives is one of those methods. Recently, modern scientific techniques of soil stabilization are on offer for this purpose. Stabilized soil is a composite material that is obtained from the combination and optimization of properties of constituent materials. Adding cementing agents such as lime, cement and industrial byproducts like fly ash and slag, with soil results in improved geotechnical properties. However, during the past few decades, a number of cases have been reported where sulfate-rich soils stabilized by cement or lime underwent a significant amount of heave leading to pavement failure. An analytical expression for the total seismic passive earth pressure from the c-Φ soil backfills on rigid retaining walls subjected to surcharge and seismic loads is derived considering wall friction and adhesion. The derivation also presents an explicit expression for the critical inclination to the horizontal of the failure plane within the backfill. The developed expressions are analyzed for special cases; the resulting expressions are found to be identical to those presented by earlier researchers for both static and seismic passive earth pressure conditions.

Partially penetrated prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) have been analyzed by many methods, including analytical methods, semi-analytical methods and finite element methods (FEM). The recent methods have considered the drain’s end as a permeable region while most of the current construction techniques use an anchor plate element at the end of a PVD, which prevents water flowing from the beneath untreated soil. This paper takes this practical situation into account and derives a semi-analytical solution for partially penetrated vertical drains. The results are also verified by FEM method using ABAQUS software. As a result, the excess pore pressure with depth obtained by the proposed solution is mechanically reasonable as compared with previous solutions and FEM. In addition, a subroutine of visual basic for application in Microsoft Excel is developed to easily obtain eigenvalues.

A New Approach to Solution for Partially Penetrated Prefabricated Vertical Drains

In the previous chapters , you studied about the basic characteristics of soils and fibres, engineering behaviour of fibre-reinforced soils with or without other admixtures/additives (lime, cement, fly ash, etc.) and reinforcing mechanisms and models. In most applications, the discrete fibres are simply added and mixed randomly with soil or other similar materials (coal ashes, mine tailings, etc.), in much the same way as lime, cement or other additives are used to stabilize and improve the soil. However, some difficulties occur at the construction site in getting a uniform mixture of soil and fibres. In the present-day construction practice, the use of fibres is one of the cost-effective and environmentally friendly ground improvement techniques. This chapter describes the possible field applications of fibre-reinforced soils, focusing on presenting specific application/construction guidelines.
