Face recognition is a problem that scarcely clamoured for attention before the computer age but, having surfaced, has involved a wide range of techniques and has attracted the attention of some fine minds (David Mumford was a Fields Medallist in 1974). This singular application of mathematical modelling to a messy applied problem of obvious utility and importance but with no unique solution is a pretty one to share with students: perhaps, returning to the source of our opening quotation, we may invert Duncan's earlier observation, 'There is an art to find the mind's construction in the face!'.

This book describes and explains the fundamental physical processes involved in bubble dynamics and the phenomenon of cavitation. It is intended as a combination of a reference book for those scientists and engineers who work with cavitation or bubble dynamics and as a monograph for advanced students interested in some of the basic problems associated with this category of multiphase flows. A basic knowledge of fluid flow and heat transfer is assumed but otherwise the analytical methods presented are developed from basic principles.

The book begins with a chapter on nucleation and describes both the theory and observations of nucleation in flowing and non-flowing systems. The following three chapters provide a systematic treatment of the dynamics of the growth, collapse or oscillation of individual bubbles in otherwise quiescent liquids. Chapter 4 summarizes the state of knowledge of the motion of bubbles in liquids. Chapter 5 describes some of the phenomena which occur in homogeneous bubbly flows with particular emphasis on cloud cavitation and this is followed by a chapter summarizing some of the experiemntal observations of cavitating flows. The last chapter provides a review of the free streamline methods used to treat separated cavity flows with large attached cavities.

Boundary Layer Theory

Impure steam is partially cooled on a first side of an energy transfer dee, forming a condensate substantially free of CO2 and other non-condensible gases. The condensate is separated from the impure steam and accumulated in a separator/accumulator. The condensate stream is conveyed through a control valve back to a second side of the energy transfer device for reheating to steam substantially free of CO2 and other non-condensible gases.

Numerical and Experimental Analysis of Single Phase Jet Interactions

When binary liquid mixtures are cooled rapidly from a homogeneous phase into a two-phase system, domains of the two equilibrium phases form and grow (coarsen) with time. In the absence of an external forcing due to gravity or an imposed shear flow, a dynamic scaling regime emerges in which the domain morphology is statistically self-similar at different times with a length-scale that grows with time. In the presence of gravity, however, multiple length scales develop, with the system coarsening more rapidly in the direction of the force. The late-time behavior of such a system is characterized in this study by the calculation of anisotropic growth laws. Gravitation effects significantly affect scaling laws, even with small density mismatch, and the growth mechanism has some similarities to the sedimentation process. However, very few numerical studies have been made of such effects; this is one of the first.
