Quasars Probing Quasars. VI. Excess H I Absorption within One Proper Mpc of z ~ 2 Quasars
J. Xavier Prochaska,J. Xavier Prochaska,Joseph F. Hennawi,Khee-Gan Lee,Sebastiano Cantalupo,Jo Bovy,S. G. Djorgovski,Sara L. Ellison,Marie Wingyee Lau,Crystal L. Martin,Adam D. Myers,Adam D. Myers,Kate H. R. Rubin,Robert A. Simcoe +13 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a sample of 650 projected quasar pairs to study the H I Lyα absorption transverse to luminous, z ~ 2 quasars at proper separations of 30 kpc 10^(17.3) cm^(-2) at separations R_⊥ < 200 kpc, which decreases to ~20% at R_ ⊥ ≃ 1 Mpc, but still represents a significant excess over the cosmic average.
Journal ArticleDOI
Galaxy pairs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey – II. The effect of environment on interactions
Sara L. Ellison,David R. Patton,Luc Simard,Alan W. McConnachie,Ivan K. Baldry,J. Trevor Mendel +5 more
TL;DR: In this article, a sample of close galaxy pairs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4 (SDSS DR4) was used to investigate in what environments galaxy mergers occur and how the results of these mergers depend on differences in local galaxy density.
Journal ArticleDOI
The neutral hydrogen cosmological mass density at z = 5
Neil H. M. Crighton,Michael T. Murphy,J. Xavier Prochaska,Gabor Worseck,Marc Rafelski,George D. Becker,Sara L. Ellison,Michele Fumagalli,Michele Fumagalli,Sebastian Lopez,Avery Meiksin,John M. O'Meara +11 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the cosmological mass density of neutral hydrogen, Ω_(Hi), has been measured at high redshift using the spectra of 163 QSOs that comprise the giant Gemini GMOS (GGG) survey.
Journal ArticleDOI
The impact of gas inflows on star formation rates and metallicities in barred galaxies
TL;DR: In this article, the star formation rates and metallicities of a sample of 294 galaxies with visually classified, strong, large-scale bars are compared to a control sample of unbarred disc galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 4.
Journal ArticleDOI
Galaxy pairs in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey – III. Evidence of induced star formation from optical colours
TL;DR: In this paper, a large catalogue of galaxy colours from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 was assembled, and 21,347 galaxies in pairs spanning a range of projected separations (rp < 80 h −1 70 kpc), relative velocities (v < 10, 000 km s −1, which includes projected pairs that are essential for quali ty control), and stellar mass ratios (from 1:10 to 10:1).
