Impacts of ocean acidification on marine fauna and ecosystem processes. - ICES Journal of Marine Science, 65: 414-432.Oceanic uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) is altering the seawater chemistry of the world’s oceans with consequences for marine biota. Elevated partial pressure of CO 2 (pCO 2 ) is causing the calcium carbonate saturation horizon to shoal in many regions, particularly in high latitudes and regions that intersect with pronounced hypoxic zones. The ability of marine animals, most importantly pteropod molluscs, foraminifera, and some benthic invertebrates, to produce calcareous skeletal structures is directly affected by seawater CO 2 chemistry. CO 2 influences the physiology of marine organisms as well through acid-base imbalance and reduced oxygen transport capacity. The few studies at relevant pCO 2 levels impede our ability to predict future impacts on foodweb dynamics and other ecosystem processes. Here we present new observations, review available data, and identify priorities for future research, based on regions, ecosystems, taxa, and physiological processes believed to be most vulnerable to ocean acidification. We conclude that ocean acidification and the synergistic impacts of other anthropogenic stressors provide great potential for widespread changes to marine ecosystems.

Analysing Ecological Data

Definitive studies on the response of marine mammals to anthropogenic sound are hampered by the short surface time and deep-diving lifestyle of many species. A novel archival tag, called the DTAG, has been developed to monitor the behavior of marine mammals, and their response to sound, continuously throughout the dive cycle. The tag contains a large array of solid-state memory and records continuously from a built-in hydrophone and suite of sensors. The sensors sample the orientation of the animal in three dimensions with sufficient speed and resolution to capture individual fluke strokes. Audio and sensor recording is synchronous so the relative timing of sounds and motion can be determined precisely. The DTAG has been attached to more than 30 northern right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) and 20 sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) with recording duration of up to 12 h per deployment. Several deployments have included sound playbacks to the tagged whale and a transient response to at least one playback is evident in the tag data.

Fatty acids (FA) represent a large group of molecules that comprise the majority of lipids found in all organisms. Their great diversity, biochemical restrictions and, in some cases, unique origin among plants and animals has fostered a number of areas of research, ranging from assessment of animal nutrition and metabolism, to investigating trophic interactions and ecosystem structure. Over the past three decades, we have observed the use of FA develop from a potential tool for delineating food webs (Ackman and Eaton 1966) to a powerful technique for quantitative assessment of predator diets (Iverson et al. 2004). Studies that have compared the FA found in predator fat stores with those found in their prey have allowed both qualitative (e.g., Horgan and Barrett 1985; Smith et al. 1996; Raclot et al. 1998; Dahl et al. 2000, 2003; Falk-Petersen et al. 2004) and quantitative or semi-quantitative analyses of diet (Kirsch et al. 2000; Iverson et al. 2001b, 2004; Iverson and Springer 2002) and

Studying trophic ecology in marine ecosystems using fatty acids: a primer on analysis and interpretation

Stable isotope analysis (SIA) has emerged as a common tool in ecology and has proven especially useful in the study of animal diet, habitat use, movement, and physiology. SIA has been vigorously applied to the study of marine mammals, because most species live in habitats or undergo large migrations/movements that make them difficult to observe. Our review supplies a complete list of published SIA contributions to marine mammal science and highlights informative case examples in four general research areas: (1) physiology and fractionation, (2) foraging ecology and habitat use, (3) ecotoxicology, and (4) historic ecology and paleoecology. We also provide a condensed background of isotopic nomenclature, highlight several physiological considerations important for accurate interpretation of isotopic data, and identify research areas ripe for future growth. Because it is impossible to conduct controlled laboratory experiments on most marine mammal species, future studies in marine mammal ecology must draw on isotopic data collected from other organisms and be cognizant of key assumptions often made in the application of SIA to the study of animal ecology. The review is designed to be accessible to all audiences, from students unfamiliar with SIA to those who have utilized it in published studies.

Sperm whales, Physeter macrocephalus, were tracked by means of a recording depth sounder in the waters off the Galapagos Islands. At depths of less than 300 m the whales generally dived nearly vertically at 60–100 m/min. At greater depths their descents were usually slower. Between February and April 1985, they dived to about 420 m, which is approximately the depth of the oxygen minimum. In 1987, a year of warmer water temperatures, they usually dived about 70 m shallower. There was no apparent diurnal variation in dive depths. None of the whales tracked dived to the ocean floor. Whales dived for about 40 min, followed by 10 min at the surface. Sperm whales usually started to make regular clicks when 150–300 m deep. Young calves appeared not to make prolonged deep dives. Our results are generally consistent with other direct information on the diving behaviour of relatively undisturbed sperm whales, but often conflict with results obtained using sonar for sperm whales being chased by whale catchers.

Single Pt atom catalysts are key targets because a high exposure of Pt substantially enhances electrocatalytic activity. In addition, PtRu alloy nanoparticles are the most active catalysts for the methanol oxidation reaction. To combine the exceptional activity of single Pt atom catalysts with an active Ru support we must overcome the synthetic challenge of forming single Pt atoms on noble metal nanoparticles. Here we demonstrate a process that grows and spreads Pt islands on Ru branched nanoparticles to create single-Pt-atom-on-Ru catalysts. By following the spreading process by in situ TEM, we found that the formation of a stable single atom structure is thermodynamically driven by the formation of strong Pt–Ru bonds and the lowering of the surface energy of the Pt islands. The stability of the single-Pt-atom-on-Ru structure and its resilience to CO poisoning result in a high current density and mass activity for the methanol oxidation reaction over time. PtRu nanoparticles are the state-of-the-art catalysts for methanol electrooxidation—the anodic reaction in direct methanol fuel cells. Now, a method of dispersing single Pt atoms over Ru nanoparticles is presented and monitored in situ, thereby boosting the catalytic performance in the methanol oxidation reaction. 

A single-Pt-atom-on-Ru-nanoparticle electrocatalyst for CO-resilient methanol oxidation

Fecal samples were collected while following sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) off the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. They contained 133 upper beaks and 164 lower beaks of cephalopods. Analysis of the lower beaks suggests that the sperm whales fed primarily on three genera of cephalopods; Histioteutbis (62%), Ancistrocbeirus (16%), and Octopoteutbis (7%). The beak dimensions indicate that the cephalopods ranged in mantle length from 5 to 54 cm and in mass from 12 to 650 g. Fecal samples varied significantly between five study years and over different parts of the study area, but the number of beaks collected per sample did not correlate significantly with defecation rate (a measure of feeding success). Using beak material from fecal samples gives a biased estimate of sperm whale diet, reducing the frequencies of very small and very large cephalopods. However, all other available methods of assessing sperm whale diet also possess biases.

Platinum is the most efficient catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic conditions, but its widespread use has been impeded by scarcity and high cost. Herein, Pt atomic clusters (Pt ACs) containing Pt-O-Pt units were prepared using Co/N co-doped carbon (CoNC) as support. Pt ACs are anchored to single Co atoms on CoNC by forming strong interactions. Pt-ACs/CoNC exhibits only 24 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm-2 and a high mass activity of 28.6 A mg-1 at 50 mV, which is more than 6 times higher than commercial Pt/C with any Pt loadings. Spectroscopic measurements and computational modeling reveal the enhanced hydrogen generation activity attributes to the charge redistribution between Pt and O atoms in Pt-O-Pt units, making Pt atoms the main active sites and O linkers the assistants, thus optimizing the proton adsorption and hydrogen desorption. This work opens an avenue to fabricate noble-metal-based ACs stabilized by single-atom catalysts with desired properties for electrocatalysis.
