Journal ArticleDOI
The genomic sequence of the accidental pathogen Legionella pneumophila.
Minchen Chien,Irina Morozova,Shundi Shi,Huitao Sheng,Jing Chen,Shawn M. Gomez,Gifty Asamani,Kendra Hill,John Nuara,Marc Feder,Justin Rineer,Joseph J. Greenberg,Valeria Steshenko,Samantha H. Park,Baohui Zhao,Elita Teplitskaya,John R. Edwards,Sergey Pampou,Anthi Georghiou,I.-Chun Chou,William Iannuccilli,Michael E. Ulz,Dae H. Kim,Alex Geringer-Sameth,Curtis Goldsberry,Pavel Morozov,Stuart G. Fischer,Gil Segal,Xiaoyan Qu,Andrey Rzhetsky,Peisen Zhang,Eftihia Cayanis,Pieter J. de Jong,Jingyue Ju,Sergey Kalachikov,Howard A. Shuman,James J. Russo +36 more
TL;DR: The genome of Legionella pneumophila includes a 45–kilobase pair element that can exist in chromosomal and episomal forms, selective expansions of important gene families, genes for unexpected metabolic pathways, and previously unknown candidate virulence determinants.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence for Acquisition of Legionella Type IV Secretion Substrates via Interdomain Horizontal Gene Transfer
Karim Suwwan de Felipe,Sergey Pampou,Oliver S. Jovanovic,Christopher D. Pericone,Senna F. Ye,Sergey Kalachikov,Howard A. Shuman +6 more
TL;DR: These findings suggest that in L. pneumophila, interdomain HGT may have been a major mechanism for the acquisition of determinants of infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased erythrophagocytosis induces ferroptosis in red pulp macrophages in a mouse model of transfusion.
Lyla A. Youssef,Abdelhadi Rebbaa,Sergey Pampou,Stuart P. Weisberg,Brent R. Stockwell,Eldad A. Hod,Steven L. Spitalnik +6 more
TL;DR: The combination of cell division among remaining splenic RPMs, along with the influx of bone marrow-derived Ly6Chi monocytes, suggests that, following RPM depletion induced by robust erythrophagocytosis, there is a coordinated effort to restore homeostasis of the RPM population by local self-maintenance and contributions from circulating monocytes.
Journal ArticleDOI
σS Controls Multiple Pathways Associated with Intracellular Multiplication of Legionella pneumophila
Galadriel Hovel-Miner,Sergey Pampou,Sébastien P. Faucher,Margaret Clarke,Irina Morozova,Pavel Morozov,James J. Russo,Howard A. Shuman,Sergey Kalachikov +8 more
TL;DR: The characterization of the L. pneumophila small RNA csrB homologs, rsmY and rsmZ, introduces a link between sigma(S) and the posttranscriptional regulator CsrA and shows that sigma (S) is a key regulator of multiple pathways required for L.neumophila intracellular multiplication.
Journal ArticleDOI
Opposing effect of angiopoietin-1 on VEGF-mediated disruption of endothelial cell-cell interactions requires activation of PKC beta.
TL;DR: It is found that Ang1 blocks VEGF‐mediated diffusion of fluoresin isothiocyanate (FITC)‐labeled albumin across an endothelial cell monolayer and that this pathway is blocked by Ang1.
