Journal ArticleDOI
HIV-infected individuals with low CD4/CD8 ratio despite effective antiretroviral therapy exhibit altered T cell subsets, heightened CD8+ T cell activation, and increased risk of non-AIDS morbidity and mortality.
Sergio Serrano-Villar,Talía Sainz,Sulggi A. Lee,Peter W. Hunt,Elizabeth Sinclair,Barbara L. Shacklett,April L. Ferre,Timothy L. Hayes,Ma Somsouk,Priscilla Y. Hsue,Mark L. Van Natta,Curtis L. Meinert,Michael M. Lederman,Hiroyu Hatano,Vivek Jain,Yong Huang,Frederick Hecht,Jeffrey N. Martin,Joseph M. McCune,Santiago Moreno,Steven G. Deeks +20 more
TL;DR: A persistently low CD4/CD8 ratio during otherwise effective ART is associated with increased innate and adaptive immune activation, an immunosenescent phenotype, and higher risk of morbidity/mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Description of COVID-19 in HIV-infected individuals: a single-centre, prospective cohort.
Pilar Vizcarra,María J Pérez-Elías,Carmen Quereda,Ana Moreno,Maria Jesús Vivancos,Fernando Dronda,Jose L Casado,Santiago Moreno,Maria Jesús Pérez-Elías,Jesús Fortún,Enrique Navas,Santos del Campo,Rogelio López-Vélez,Javier Cobo Reinoso,José L. Casado,Franceca Norman,Pilar Martín-Dávila,José Hermida,José Antonio Pérez Molina,Begoña Monge,Vicente Pintado,Sergio Serrano-Villar,Matilde Sánchez-Conde,Sandra Chamorro,Rosa Escudero,Francesca Gioia,Belén Comeche,Clara Crespillo,Sabina Herrera,Raquel Ron,Javier Martínez-Sanz,Mario Pons-Guillén,María J Vivancos +32 more
TL;DR: HIV-infected individuals with COVID-19 should not be considered to be protected from SARS-CoV-2 infection or to have lower risk of severe disease, and they should receive the same treatment approach applied to the general population.
Journal ArticleDOI
Altered metabolism of gut microbiota contributes to chronic immune activation in HIV-infected individuals
Jorge F. Vázquez-Castellanos,Sergio Serrano-Villar,Amparo Latorre,Alejandro Artacho,María Loreto Ferrús,Nadia Madrid,A. Vallejo,Talia Sainz,Javier Martínez-Botas,Sara Ferrando-Martinez,Mar Vera,Fernando Dronda,Manuel Leal,J del Romero,Santiago Moreno,Vicente Estrada,María José Gosalbes,Andrés Moya +17 more
TL;DR: Systemic markers of innate and adaptive immunity in a cohort of HIV-infected individuals on successful antiretroviral therapy without comorbidities and in healthy non-HIV- infected subjects are determined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased Risk of Serious Non-AIDS-Related Events in HIV-Infected Subjects on Antiretroviral Therapy Associated with a Low CD4/CD8 Ratio
Sergio Serrano-Villar,María J Pérez-Elías,Fernando Dronda,José L. Casado,Ana Moreno,Ana Royuela,José A. Pérez-Molina,Talía Sainz,Enrique Navas,José Hermida,Carmen Quereda,Santiago Moreno +11 more
TL;DR: The CD4/CD8 ratio provides additional information to the CD4 counts and nadir CD4 in treated HIV-infected individuals, since it is independently associated with the risk of non-AIDS-related morbidity and mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bryostatin-1 for latent virus reactivation in HIV-infected patients on antiretroviral therapy.
Carolina Gutiérrez,Sergio Serrano-Villar,Nadia Madrid-Elena,María J Pérez-Elías,Maria Elena Martín,Coral Barbas,Javier Ruipérez,Eduardo Muñoz,María Ángeles Muñoz-Fernández,Trevor P. Castor,Santiago Moreno +10 more
TL;DR: Bryostatin-1 was safe at the single doses administered, however, the drug did not show any effect on PKC activity or on the transcription of latent HIV, probably due to low plasma concentrations.
