The entire panorama of the neural sciences is surveyed and examined, and it is comprehensive in its scope, from genomes to social behaviors. The editors explicitly state that the book is designed as "an introductory text for students of biology, behavior, and medicine," but it is hard to imagine any audience, interested in any fragment of neuroscience at any level of sophistication, that would not enjoy this book. Allergic Rhinitis and Its Impact on Asthma

Summary Background Through the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors (GBD) studies, headache has emerged as a major global public health concern. We aimed to use data from the GBD 2016 study to provide new estimates for prevalence and years of life lived with disability (YLDs) for migraine and tension-type headache and to present the methods and results in an accessible way for clinicians and researchers of headache disorders. Methods Data were derived from population-based cross-sectional surveys on migraine and tension-type headache. Prevalence for each sex and 5-year age group interval (ie, age 5 years to ≥95 years) at different time points from 1990 and 2016 in all countries and GBD regions were estimated using a Bayesian meta-regression model. Disease burden measured in YLDs was calculated from prevalence and average time spent with headache multiplied by disability weights (a measure of the relative severity of the disabling consequence of a disease). The burden stemming from medication overuse headache, which was included in earlier iterations of GBD as a separate cause, was subsumed as a sequela of either migraine or tension-type headache. Because no deaths were assigned to headaches as the underlying cause, YLDs equate to disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). We also analysed results on the basis of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a compound measure of income per capita, education, and fertility. Findings Almost three billion individuals were estimated to have a migraine or tension-type headache in 2016: 1·89 billion (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 1·71–2·10) with tension-type headache and 1·04 billion (95% UI 1·00–1·09) with migraine. However, because migraine had a much higher disability weight than tension-type headache, migraine caused 45·1 million (95% UI 29·0–62·8) and tension-type headache only 7·2 million (95% UI 4·6–10·5) YLDs globally in 2016. The headaches were most burdensome in women between ages 15 and 49 years, with migraine causing 20·3 million (95% UI 12·9–28·5) and tension-type headache 2·9 million (95% UI 1·8–4·2) YLDs in 2016, which was 11·2% of all YLDs in this age group and sex. Age-standardised DALYs for each headache type showed a small increase as SDI increased. Interpretation Although current estimates are based on limited data, our study shows that headache disorders, and migraine in particular, are important causes of disability worldwide, and deserve greater attention in health policy debates and research resource allocation. Future iterations of this study, based on sources from additional countries and with less methodological heterogeneity, should help to provide stronger evidence of the need for action. Global, regional, and national burden of migraine and tension-type headache, 1990-2016: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016

Developing and implementing successful interventions often depend upon effectively addressing ethnicity and social class factors, as these influence sexual behavior and its risks. Sexual attitudes differ across cultures. In most cultures, there are strong standards regarding sexual behavior which differ for men and women. Cultural differences also affect the extent to which early sexual behavior is considered acceptable.

Background: Migraine is a common type of primary headache with disabling brain dysfunction. It has been found that pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP) is involved in the pathogenesis of migraine, however, the role of PACAP and its receptors in chronic migraine remains unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore the changes of PACAP and its receptors in different duration after recurrent dural inflammation soup stimulations and to investigate the co-expression between PACAP and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP). Methods: Adult male rats were implanted with cannula surrounding superior sagittal sinus, which was followed by dural infusion of inflammatory soup (IS) or normal saline (NS). The rats were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 8 for each group): IS stimulation for seven days (IS-7 group), IS stimulation for 14 days (IS-14 group), IS stimulation for 21 days (IS-21 group), and NS control for 21 days (CON group). The facial mechanical withdrawal threshold was daily measured during the whole experiment. The behavioral changes (ipsilateral and bilateral face grooming behavior) in a plastic cage of rats were observed and recorded. The expression of PACAP, its receptors (PAC1, VPAC1, VPAC2), and CGRP in the trigeminal ganglia (TG) and the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC) was examined by immunohistochemistry. Immunofluorescence was used to explore the co-expression of PACAP, PAC1 receptor, and CGRP after repeated IS administration in the TG. Results: The ipsilateral facial grooming time of IS-21 group displayed an apparent increase than CON group after repeated stimulation on day 2, while significant differences were observed on day 14. No differences were found between the IS-21 and CON group in bilateral facial grooming. Dural IS stimulation induced a significantly decrease in facial mechanical withdrawal thresholds. PACAP positive cells in the regions of TNC were gradually decreased with the IS days increasing. PACAP and PAC1 receptor expression in the TG had a trend of increasing first and then decreasing. There was no significant difference in expression of VPAC1 and VPAC2 in the TG and the TNC. Immunofluorescence showed that PACAP was mainly expressed in TG neurons. PACAP and PAC1 receptor co-expression decreased gradually after repetitive IS stimulation. While the co-expression between PACAP and CGRP reached the peak in IS-7 group after repetitive IS stimulation, and then decreased. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that repetitive chemical stimulations induced a gradual decrease of PACAP in the TNC, while the PACAP and PAC1 receptor expression in TG showed dynamical changes of increasing first and then decreasing after repeated IS administration. These results suggested exhaustion of PACAP could be involved in the duration of chronic migraine and implied PACAP may contribute to the pathology of migraine through the PAC1 receptor, which was associated with CGRP.

Temporal alterations of pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide and its receptors in a rat model induced by recurrent chemical stimulations: Relevant to chronic migraine

Objectives We aimed to determine a method to identify normal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) glucose levels by examining the correlation between blood and CSF glucose levels in patients with normal and abnormal glucose metabolism. Methods One hundred ninety-five patients were divided into two groups according to their glucose metabolism. The glucose levels were obtained from CSF and fingertip blood at 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and 0  h before lumbar puncture. SPSS 22.0 software was used for the statistical analysis. Results In both the normal and abnormal glucose metabolism groups, CSF glucose levels increased with blood glucose levels at 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, and 0  h before lumbar puncture. In the normal glucose metabolism group, the CSF/blood glucose ratio range was 0.35–0.95 at 0–6  h before lumbar puncture, and the CSF/average blood glucose ratio range was 0.43–0.74. In the abnormal glucose metabolism group, the CSF/blood glucose ratio range was 0.25–1.2 at 0–6  h before lumbar puncture, and the CSF/average blood glucose ratio range was 0.33–0.78. Conclusion The CSF glucose level is influenced by the blood glucose level 6  h before lumbar puncture. In patients with normal glucose metabolism, direct measurement of the CSF glucose level can be used to determine whether the CSF level is normal. However, in patients with abnormal or unclear glucose metabolism, the CSF/average blood glucose ratio should be used to determine whether the CSF glucose level is normal.

Correlation between blood glucose and cerebrospinal fluid glucose levels in patients with differences in glucose metabolism

Short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCT) and short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with cranial autonomic symptoms (SUNA) have not been evaluated sufficiently due to limited data, particularly in China.Patients with SUNCT or SUNA treated in a tertiary headache centre or seven other headache clinics of China between April 2009 and July 2022 were studied; we compared their demographics and clinical phenotypes.The 45 patients with SUNCT and 31 patients with SUNA had mean ages at onset of 37.22 ± 14.54 years and 42.45 ± 14.72 years, respectively. The mean ages at diagnosis of SUNCT and SUNA were 41.62 ± 12.70 years and 48.68 ± 13.80 years, respectively (p = 0.024). The correct diagnosis of SUNCT or SUNA was made after an average of 2.5 (0-20.5) years or 3.0 (0-20.7) years, respectively. Both diseases had a female predominance (SUNCT: 1.14:1; SUNA: 2.10:1). The two diseases differed in the most common attack site (temporal area in SUNCT, p = 0.017; parietal area in SUNA, p = 0.002). Qualitative descriptions of the attacks included stabbing pain (44.7%), electric-shock-like pain (36.8%), shooting pain (25.0%), and slashing pain (18.4%). Lacrimation was the most common autonomic symptom in both SUNCT and SUNA patients, while eyelid oedema, ptosis, and miosis were less frequent. Triggers such as cold air and face washing were shared by the two diseases, and they were consistently ipsilateral to the attack site.In contrast to Western countries, SUNCT and SUNA in China have a greater female predominance and an earlier onset. The shared core phenotype of SUNCT and SUNA, despite their partial differences, suggests that they are the same clinical entity.

Similarities and differences between SUNCT and SUNA: a cross-sectional, multicentre study of 76 patients in China

Inhibiting Neuronal Adenylyl Cyclase Subtype 1 (AC1) for Treating Anxiety and Headache in the Animal Model of Migraine

Involvement of the central gray matter of spinal cord is a characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) feature of aquaporin-4-immunoglobulin G antibodies (AQP4-IgG) positive neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). However, there has been no systemic electrophysiological study investigating the frequency of lower motor neuron involvement in NMOSD patients.We retrospectively reviewed a cohort of 59 NMOSD patients with results of concentric needle electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) that were admitted to the Department of Neurology of Chinese PLA General Hospital between January 2016 and December 2019.Acute and/or chronic denervation was found in 22.0% (13/59) of the NMOSD patients by EMG. Peripheral or cranial neuropathy indicated by abnormal NCS changes was found in 11.9% (7/59) of the NMOSD patients. Denervation indicated by EMG that can be accounted for by abnormal NCS was found in 6.8% (4/59) of the NMOSD patients, while 3.4% (2/59) of the NMOSD patients had NCS abnormality without denervation indicated by EMG. Accordingly, 9 of the 59 NMOSD patients (15.3%) had lower motor neuron involvement, and moreover, 6.8% (4/59) of the NMOSD patients had corresponding spinal cord or brainstem lesions on MRI.Not uncommon lower motor neuron involvement exists in NMOSD patients, so needle EMG and NCS studies should be performed in NMOSD patients with suspected lower motor neuron involvement.
