Journal ArticleDOI

Characterization of biocontrol activity of two yeast strains from Uruguay against blue mold of apple

TL;DR: Two yeast antagonists isolated from the surface of healthy apples, controlled blue mold of apple caused by Penicillium expansum and Nitrogen rather than carbon appeared to be the limiting factor to both the antagonists and the pathogen.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluation of yeasts obtained from Antarctic soil samples as biocontrol agents for the management of postharvest diseases of apple (Malus × domestica).

TL;DR: Psychrotrophic yeasts isolated from Antarctic soils, selected based on their ability to grow in apple juice at low temperatures, and evaluated as potential biocontrol agents for the management of postharvest diseases of apple during cold storage produced soluble and volatile antifungal substances that were inhibitory to apple pathogens.
Journal ArticleDOI

Glycine betaine improves oxidative stress tolerance and biocontrol efficacy of the antagonistic yeast Cystofilobasidium infirmominiatum.

TL;DR: Results indicate that the elicitation of antioxidant response by GB may contribute to improvements in oxidative stress tolerance, population growth in apple wounds, and biocontrol activity of C. infirmominiatum.
Journal ArticleDOI

Volatile organic compounds produced by Antarctic strains of Candida sake play a role in the control of postharvest pathogens of apples.

TL;DR: The strategy of isolating psychrotrophic, non-pectinolytic yeasts able to grow in apple juice as potential biocontrol agents was a successful approach and antifungal volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by yeasts against species of Alternaria that cause postharvest apple rot were inhibited.
