Quantifying ingested debris in marine megafauna: a review and recommendations for standardization
Jennifer F. Provencher,Jennifer F. Provencher,Alexander L. Bond,Stephanie Avery-Gomm,Stephanie B. Borrelle,Elisa L. Bravo Rebolledo,Sjúrður Hammer,Susanne Kühn,Jennifer L. Lavers,Mark L. Mallory,Alice M. Trevail,Jan A. van Franeker +11 more
TL;DR: Standardized techniques, approaches and metrics for reporting debris ingestion that are applicable to most large marine vertebrates are discussed and proposed, with the aim of harmonizing the data that are available to facilitate large-scale comparisons and meta-analyses of plastic accumulation in a variety of taxa.
Journal ArticleDOI
Plastic debris in great skua (Stercorarius skua) pellets corresponds to seabird prey species.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that marine plastic debris is transferred from surface feeding seabird species to predatory great skuas, and that Northern fulmars have higher loads of plastics than other sympatric species.
Journal ArticleDOI
Recommended best practices for plastic and litter ingestion studies in marine birds: Collection, processing, and reporting
Jennifer F. Provencher,Jennifer F. Provencher,Stephanie B. Borrelle,Alexander L. Bond,Jennifer L. Lavers,Jan A. van Franeker,Susanne Kühn,Sjúrður Hammer,Stephanie Avery-Gomm,Mark L. Mallory,Mark L. Mallory +10 more
TL;DR: The authors provide a synthesized set of recommendations specific for seabirds and plastic ingestion studies that include best practices in relation to sample collection, processing, and reporting, as well as highlighting some "cross-cutting" methods.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Horizon Scan of research priorities to inform policies aimed at reducing the harm of plastic pollution to biota
Jennifer F. Provencher,Max Liboiron,Stephanie B. Borrelle,Stephanie B. Borrelle,Alexander L. Bond,Alexander L. Bond,Chelsea M. Rochman,Jennifer L. Lavers,Stephanie Avery-Gomm,R Yamashita,Peter G. Ryan,Amy Lusher,Sjúrður Hammer,H Bradshaw,J Khan,Mark L. Mallory +15 more
TL;DR: The results focus collective priorities in terms of research that experts believe will inform effective policy and on-the-ground conservation on the topic of impacts of plastic pollution on biota.
Journal ArticleDOI
The age of the Twitter conference
TL;DR: It is proposed that global Twitter conferences could be a cost-effective and low-carbon complement to traditional conferences and demonstrate the effectiveness of Twitter as a peer-to-peer platform for scientific interaction and science communication.
