Solar thermal collectors and applications

Renewable technologies are considered as clean sources of energy and optimal use of these resources minimize environmental impacts, produce minimum secondary wastes and are sustainable based on current and future economic and social societal needs. Sun is the source of all energies. The primary forms of solar energy are heat and light. Sunlight and heat are transformed and absorbed by the environment in a multitude of ways. Some of these transformations result in renewable energy flows such as biomass and wind energy. Renewable energy technologies provide an excellent opportunity for mitigation of greenhouse gas emission and reducing global warming through substituting conventional energy sources. In this article a review has been done on scope of CO2 mitigation through solar cooker, water heater, dryer, biofuel, improved cookstoves and by hydrogen.

Role of renewable energy sources in environmental protection: A review

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) constitute a class of flexible nonlinear models designed to mimic biological neural systems. Artificial neural networks

The energy performance in buildings is influenced by many factors, such as ambient weather conditions, building structure and characteristics, the operation of sub-level components like lighting and HVAC systems, occupancy and their behavior. This complex situation makes it very difficult to accurately implement the prediction of building energy consumption. This paper reviews recently developed models for solving this problem, which include elaborate and simplified engineering methods, statistical methods and artificial intelligence methods. Previous research work concerning these models and relevant applications are introduced. Based on the analysis of previous work, further prospects are proposed for additional research reference.

A review on the prediction of building energy consumption

A review of computer tools for analysing the integration of renewable energy into various energy systems

There are three types of imaging concentrating solar collectors, the parabolic trough, the parabolic dish and the central receiver. The second law of thermodynamics is used to analyze the potential for entropy generation minimization of imaging concentrating solar collectors. It is shown that the amount of exergy (useful energy) delivered by solar concentrating collector systems is affected by heat transfer irreversibilities occurring between the sun and the collector, between the collector and ambient air and within the collector receiver (absorber). Analysis is performed and relations are derived in this paper by considering both, an isothermal and a non-isothermal collector which is a more realistic model particularly for the long parabolic trough collectors. Relations for the optimum operating conditions, in terms of the optimum collector outlet temperature for minimum heat transfer irreversibility or entropy generation minimization (or maximum exergy delivery), are derived. The importance of operating at the optimum delivery temperature is analyzed and optimum values of entropy generated are derived for the collector types considered.

Entropy Generation Minimisation of Imaging Concentrating Solar Collectors

The objective of this paper is to present an analysis of the weather data contained in a Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) and observe the effect of these data on the simulated load of a typical building The weather data, contained in the TMY, are analysed with respect to the global and diffuse radiation falling on surfaces facing the four orientations, ambient temperature, wind speed and direction, and humidity ratio Collective results for the whole year indicate that the east wall receives 30% more total radiation than the south wall and the west wall receives only 20% of the beam radiation of the east wall Three different construction types of a typical house layout are also used in this study and simulated with respect to the heating and cooling loads for a complete year For the weather encountered in Cyprus the maximum cooling load occurs in July and the maximum heating load in January The monthly saving in loads by using insulation is of the order of 50% for cooling and 75% for heating

Analysis of the typical meteorological year (tmy) of cyprus and house load simulation

This paper describes the work that will be done in a research project, which will facilitate the implementation of the EPBD through the calculation of the existing Cyprus Building Stock energy behaviour. This will be achieved through the selection of a representative sample of 500 housing units and the collection of data through questionnaires, followed by statistical analysis of the data and the interpretation of the results. The key parameters that will form the different clusters are climatological zone, type, age and size of each housing unit. The statistical interpretation of the collected dataset will provide insights with regards to the energy behaviour of the building stock for each class. The ultimate goal is to suggest the number of classes for the Energy Performance Certificate and the upper and lower energy consumption limits for each class. Moreover, the formulation of an energy behaviour map, the consideration of the historical development of the buildings behaviour and the improvement of the insulating materials and solutions, will lead to the readjustment of the values, particularly for the best two classes, so as not only to reflect today’s reality, but also to show the intent of the state to improve the level of the construction industry. In this study, the various types and quantities of thermal insulating materials utilized in Cyprus, for the time interval 01/01/08–30/09/08, are also reported. The data were extracted from applications made by individuals who claimed financial subsidy. A random specimen of 400 applications was evaluated: 55% refer to existing housing, and 45% to new buildings. The different kinds of materials used for insulating floorings, walls and roofs, in different regions of the island were evaluated. The principal observation made is the extensive use of double glazing for doors and windows.
