Journal ArticleDOI
Risk factors and comorbidities in the preclinical stages of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Hans Van Remoortel,Miek Hornikx,Daniel Langer,Chris Burtin,Stephanie Everaerts,Peter Verhamme,Steven Boonen,Rik Gosselink,Marc Decramer,Thierry Troosters,Wim Janssens +10 more
TL;DR: The prevalence of premorbid risk factors and comorbid diseases was significantly higher in preclinical COPD compared with age-matched never-smoking control subjects, but was similar to smoking control subjects not suffering from COPD.
Journal ArticleDOI
The aging lung: tissue telomere shortening in health and disease
Stephanie Everaerts,Elise Lammertyn,Dries S. Martens,Laurens J. De Sadeleer,Karen Maes,Aernoud A. van Batenburg,Roel Goldschmeding,Coline H.M. van Moorsel,Lieven Dupont,Wim A. Wuyts,Robin Vos,Ghislaine Gayan-Ramirez,Naftali Kaminski,James C. Hogg,Wim Janssens,Geert Verleden,Tim S. Nawrot,Tim S. Nawrot,Stijn E. Verleden,John E. McDonough,Bart M. Vanaudenaerde +20 more
TL;DR: Lung tissue RTL does not seem to fully reflect peripheral blood telomere length, and when investigating the relation between RTL and regional disease severity in CF, cHP and RAS, no association was found.
Journal ArticleDOI
Azithromycin during Acute Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Exacerbations Requiring Hospitalization (BACE). A Multicenter, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-controlled Trial.
Kristina Vermeersch,Maria Gabrovska,Joseph Aumann,Ingel K. Demedts,Jean-Louis Corhay,Eric Marchand,Hans Slabbynck,Christel Haenebalcke,Michiel Haerens,Shane Hanon,Paul Jordens,Rudi Peché,Antoine Fremault,Tine Lauwerier,Anja Delporte,Bert Vandenberk,Rik Willems,Stephanie Everaerts,Ann Belmans,Kris Bogaerts,Geert Verleden,Thierry Troosters,Vincent Ninane,Guy Brusselle,Wim Janssens +24 more
TL;DR: 3m of azithromycin for AECOPD requiring hospitalization may significantly reduce treatment failure during the highest risk period, and prolonged treatment seems needed to maintain clinical benefits.
Journal ArticleDOI
Small airway loss in the physiologically ageing lung: a cross-sectional study in unused donor lungs.
Stijn E. Verleden,Miranda Kirby,Stephanie Everaerts,Arno Vanstapel,John E. McDonough,Erik Verbeken,Peter Braubach,Matthieu Boone,Danesh Aslam,Johny Verschakelen,Laurens J. Ceulemans,Arne Neyrinck,Dirk Van Raemdonck,Robin Vos,Marc Decramer,Tillie L. Hackett,James C. Hogg,Wim Janssens,Geert Verleden,Bart M. Vanaudenaerde +19 more
TL;DR: This cross-sectional study included donor lungs collected from 32 deceased never-smoking donors and found an age-dependent decrease in the number of airways of diameter 2·0 mm to less than 2·5 mm and this decrease was associated with the age-related decline of pulmonary function predicted by healthy reference values.
Journal ArticleDOI
1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D Modulates Antibacterial and Inflammatory Response in Human Cigarette Smoke-Exposed Macrophages.
Nele Heulens,Hannelie Korf,Carolien Mathyssen,Stephanie Everaerts,Elien De Smidt,Christophe Dooms,Jonas Yserbyt,Conny Gysemans,Ghislaine Gayan-Ramirez,Chantal Mathieu,Wim Janssens +10 more
TL;DR: Results provide the first evidence that vitamin D could be a new strategy for attenuating airway inflammation and improving antibacterial defense in CS-exposed airways.
