TL;DR: There remain numerous structural limitations for these programs, largely related to the passive approach of former models in which students are sent to observe the healthcare system of a developing country with little preparation and with no capacity to enhance or support that system, highlighting the need for new models that directly address the limitations while still encouraging the growth of global health electives and cross-cultural exchange.
