Journal ArticleDOI
Dispiro-1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes: a new class of antimalarial peroxides.
Jonathan L. Vennerstrom,Hong Ning Fu,William Y. Ellis,Arba L. Ager,James K. Wood,Steven L. Andersen,Lucia Gerena,Wilbur K. Milhous +7 more
TL;DR: Results confirm the potential of dispiro-1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes as a new class of inexpensive peroxide antimalarial drugs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bisquinolines. 1. N,N-bis(7-chloroquinolin-4-yl)alkanediamines with potential against chloroquine-resistant malaria
Jonathan L. Vennerstrom,William Y. Ellis,William Y. Ellis,William Y. Ellis,Arba L. Ager,Arba L. Ager,Arba L. Ager,Steven L. Andersen,Steven L. Andersen,Steven L. Andersen,Lucia Gerena,Lucia Gerena,Lucia Gerena,Wilbur K. Milhous,Wilbur K. Milhous,Wilbur K. Milhous +15 more
TL;DR: Preliminary results support the premise that bisquinolines may be useful agents against chloroquine-resistant malaria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Synthesis and Antimalarial Activity of Sixteen Dispiro-1,2,4,5-tetraoxanes: Alkyl-Substituted 7,8,15,16-Tetraoxadispiro[5.2.5.2]hexadecanes
Jonathan L. Vennerstrom,Yuxiang Dong,Steven L. Andersen,Arba L. Ager,H.-N. Fu,Robert E. Miller,D. L. Wesche,Dennis E. Kyle,Lucia Gerena,S. M. Walters,James K. Wood,Geoffrey Edwards,Geoffrey Edwards,A. D. Holme,W. G. Mclean,Wilbur K. Milhous +15 more
TL;DR: There was no apparent relationship between tetraoxane structure and in vitro neurotoxicity, nor was there any correlation between antimalarial activity and neurotoxicity for these seventeen tetraxanes.
Journal ArticleDOI
Bisquinolines. 2. Antimalarial N,N-Bis(7-chloroquinolin-4- yl)heteroalkanediamines
Jonathan L. Vennerstrom,Arba L. Ager,Arnulf Dorn,Steven L. Andersen,Lucia Gerena,Robert G. Ridley,Wilbur K. Milhous +6 more
TL;DR: N,N-Bis(7-chloroquinolin-4-yl)heteroalkanediamines 1-11 were synthesized and screened against Plasmodium falciparum in vitro and PlasModium berghei in vivo and none of these heteroalkane-bridged bisquinolines had sufficient antimalarial activity to warrant further investigation of the series.
Journal ArticleDOI
Activity of Azithromycin as a Blood Schizonticide against Rodent and Human Plasmodia In Vivo
Steven L. Andersen,Arba L. Ager,P. McGreevy,B. G. Schuster,D. Wesche,R. Kuschner,C. Ohrt,W. Ellis,R. Rossan,Judith Berman +9 more
TL;DR: The data suggest that it may be possible to replace drugs of the tetracycline class with azithromycin in combination with fast-acting blood schizonticides for the treatment of P. falciparum infection.
