Journal ArticleDOI
Impacts of Fishing Low-Trophic Level Species on Marine Ecosystems
Anthony D. M. Smith,Christopher J. Brown,Christopher J. Brown,Catherine M. Bulman,Elizabeth A. Fulton,Penny Johnson,Isaac C. Kaplan,Hector Lozano-Montes,Steven Mackinson,Martin P. Marzloff,Martin P. Marzloff,Lynne J. Shannon,Yunne-Jai Shin,Yunne-Jai Shin,Jorge Tam +14 more
TL;DR: It is found that fishing low–trophic level species at conventional maximum sustainable yield (MSY) levels can have large impacts on other parts of the ecosystem, particularly when they constitute a high proportion of the biomass in the ecosystem or are highly connected in the food web.
Journal ArticleDOI
Best practice in Ecopath with Ecosim food-web models for ecosystem-based management
Johanna J. Heymans,Marta Coll,Marta Coll,Jason S. Link,Steven Mackinson,Jeroen Steenbeek,Carl J. Walters,Villy Christensen +7 more
TL;DR: An overview of best practices for creating Ecopath with Ecosim models is provided, and how Monte Carlo simulations can be used to address uncertainty in input parameters is shown.
Journal ArticleDOI
End-To-End Models for the Analysis of Marine Ecosystems: Challenges, Issues, and Next Steps
Kenneth A. Rose,J. Icarus Allen,Yuri Artioli,Manuel Barange,Jerry Blackford,Francois Carlotti,Roger Allan Cropp,Ute Daewel,Karen P. Edwards,Kevin J. Flynn,Simeon L. Hill,Reinier HilleRisLambers,Geir Huse,Steven Mackinson,Bernard A. Megrey,Andreas Moll,Richard B. Rivkin,Baris Salihoglu,Corinna Schrum,Lynne J. Shannon,Yunne-Jai Shin,S. Lan Smith,Caleb Smith,Cosimo Solidoro,Michael St. John,Meng Zhou +25 more
TL;DR: End-to-end modeling is in its early developmental stages and thus presents an opportunity to establish an open-access, community-based approach supported by a suite of true interdisciplinary efforts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Using indicators for evaluating, comparing, and communicating the ecological status of exploited marine ecosystems. 2. Setting the scene.
Yunne-Jai Shin,Lynne J. Shannon,Alida Bundy,Marta Coll,Kerim Aydin,Nicolas Bez,Julia L. Blanchard,Maria de Fátima Borges,Ibrahima Diallo,Erich Díaz,Johanna J. Heymans,Louize Hill,Edda Johannesen,Didier Jouffre,Souad Kifani,P. Labrosse,Jason S. Link,Steven Mackinson,Hicham Masski,Christian Möllmann,Sergio Neira,Henn Ojaveer,Khairdine ould Mohammed Abdallahi,Ian Perry,Djiga Thiao,Dawit Yemane,Philippe Cury +26 more
TL;DR: The IndiSeas Working Group as discussed by the authors used a combination of selected indicators to reflect different dynamics, tracking processes that display differential responses to fishing, and is meant to provide a complementary means of assessing marine ecosystem trends and states.
Journal ArticleDOI
Engaging stakeholders in fisheries and marine research
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that despite knowledgebrokering being of high interest to public policy, there is a lack of research integrating the knowledge of stakeholders and scientists, principally because public policies remain viewed as top-down controlled.
