Recent advancements in the Internet of Health Things (IoHT) have ushered in the wide adoption of IoT devices in our daily health management. For IoHT data to be acceptable by stakeholders, applications that incorporate the IoHT must have a provision for data provenance, in addition to the accuracy, security, integrity, and quality of data. To protect the privacy and security of IoHT data, federated learning (FL) and differential privacy (DP) have been proposed, where private IoHT data can be trained at the owner’s premises. Recent advancements in hardware GPUs even allow the FL process within smartphone or edge devices having the IoHT attached to their edge nodes. Although some of the privacy concerns of IoHT data are addressed by FL, fully decentralized FL is still a challenge due to the lack of training capability at all federated nodes, the scarcity of high-quality training datasets, the provenance of training data, and the authentication required for each FL node. In this paper, we present a lightweight hybrid FL framework in which blockchain smart contracts manage the edge training plan, trust management, and authentication of participating federated nodes, the distribution of global or locally trained models, the reputation of edge nodes and their uploaded datasets or models. The framework also supports the full encryption of a dataset, the model training, and the inferencing process. Each federated edge node performs additive encryption, while the blockchain uses multiplicative encryption to aggregate the updated model parameters. To support the full privacy and anonymization of the IoHT data, the framework supports lightweight DP. This framework was tested with several deep learning applications designed for clinical trials with COVID-19 patients. We present here the detailed design, implementation, and test results, which demonstrate strong potential for wider adoption of IoHT-based health management in a secure way.

Secure and Provenance Enhanced Internet of Health Things Framework: A Blockchain Managed Federated Learning Approach

This article provides a literature review of state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) algorithms for disaster and pandemic management. Most nations are concerned about disasters and pandemics, which, in general, are highly unlikely events. To date, various technologies, such as IoT, object sensing, UAV, 5G, and cellular networks, smartphone-based system, and satellite-based systems have been used for disaster and pandemic management. ML algorithms can handle multidimensional, large volumes of data that occur naturally in environments related to disaster and pandemic management and are particularly well suited for important related tasks, such as recognition and classification. ML algorithms are useful for predicting disasters and assisting in disaster management tasks, such as determining crowd evacuation routes, analyzing social media posts, and handling the post-disaster situation. ML algorithms also find great application in pandemic management scenarios, such as predicting pandemics, monitoring pandemic spread, disease diagnosis, etc. This article first presents a tutorial on ML algorithms. It then presents a detailed review of several ML algorithms and how we can combine these algorithms with other technologies to address disaster and pandemic management. It also discusses various challenges, open issues and, directions for future research.

Disaster and Pandemic Management Using Machine Learning: A Survey

Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel paradigm, which not only facilitates a large number of devices to be ubiquitously connected over the Internet but also provides a mechanism to remotely control these devices. The IoT is pervasive and is almost an integral part of our daily life. As devices are becoming increasingly connected, privacy and security issues become more and more critical and these need to be addressed on an urgent basis. IoT implementations and devices are eminently prone to threats that could compromise the security and privacy of the consumers, which, in turn, could influence its practical deployment. In recent past, some research has been carried out to secure IoT devices with an intention to alleviate the security concerns of users. The purpose of this paper is to highlight the security and privacy issues in IoT systems. To this effect, the paper examines the security issues at each layer in the IoT protocol stack, identifies the underlying challenges and key security requirements and provides a brief overview of existing security solutions to safeguard the IoT from the layered context.

Authentication and Identity Management of IoHT Devices: Achievements, Challenges, and Future Directions

Medical Imaging is the most significant technique that constitutes information needed to diagnose and make the right decisions for treatment. These images suffer from inadequate contrast and noise that occurs during image acquisition. Thus, denoising and contrast enhancement is crucial in increasing the visual quality of the images for obtaining quantitative measures. In this research, an innovative and improvised denoising technique is implemented that applies a sparse aware with convolution neural network (SA_CNN) for investigating various medical modalities. To evaluate and validate, the convolution neural network utilizes patch creation and dictionary methods for obtaining information. The proposed framework is predominant to other current approaches by employing image assessment quantitative measures like peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index (SSIM), and mean squared error (MSE). The study also optimizes the computational time to achieve increased efficiency and better visual quality of the image. Furthermore, the widespread use of the Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT) helps to provide security with vault and challenge schemes between IoT devices and servers.

Kidney failure occurs whenever the kidney stops to operate properly and would be unable to cleanse or refine the bloodstream as it should. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a potentially fatal consequence. If this condition is diagnosed early, its progression can be delayed. There are various factors that increase the likelihood of developing kidney failure. As a consequence, in order to detect this potentially fatal condition early on, these risk factors must be checked on a regular basis before the individual's health deteriorates. Furthermore, it lowers the cost of therapy. The chronic kidney or renal disease will be recognized in this work utilizing fuzzy and adaptive neural fuzzy inference systems. The fundamental purpose of this initiative is to enhance the precision of medical diagnostics used to diagnose illnesses. Nephron functioning, glucose levels, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, maturity level, weight and height, and smoking are all elements to consider while developing a fuzzy and adaptable neural fuzzy inference system. The output variable describes a specific patient's stage of chronic renal disease based on input factors such as stage 1, stage 2, stage 3, stage 4, and stage 5. The outcome will show the present stage of a patient's kidney. As a result, these methods can assist specialists in determining the stage of chronic renal disease. MATLAB software is used to create the fuzzy and neural fuzzy inference systems.

Fuzzy Logic-Based Systems for the Diagnosis of Chronic Kidney Disease

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is precise and efficient for interpreting the soft and hard tissues. Moreover, for the detailed diagnosis of varied diseases such as knee rheumatoid arthritis (RA), segmentation of the knee magnetic resonance image is a challenging and complex task that has been explored broadly. However, the accuracy and reproducibility of segmentation approaches may require prior extraction of tissues from MR images. The advances in computational methods for segmentation are reliant on several parameters such as the complexity of the tissue, quality, and acquisition process involved. This review paper focuses and briefly describes the challenges faced by segmentation techniques from magnetic resonance images followed by an overview of diverse categories of segmentation approaches. The review paper also focuses on automatic approaches and semiautomatic approaches which are extensively used with performance metrics and sufficient achievement for clinical trial assistance. Furthermore, the results of different approaches related to MR sequences used to image the knee tissues and future aspects of the segmentation are discussed.

Machine Learning Techniques for Quantification of Knee Segmentation from MRI

In this paper we evaluate different supervised methods, we study the impact of different algorithms on deceptive messages. In deception detection, Bayesian Filters are widely and successfully applied for the sake of detecting and eliminating spam but, fail to function well in scenarios where false positives are penalized heavily. In our method we use different classifiers with different data sets. We have used WEKA interface in our integrated classification model and tested diverse classification algorithms. Our experimental study show significant performance in terms of classification accuracy with reduction of false positive instances. Random Forest & SVM Classifiers outperforms the conventional one in terms of increasing the true positives and the true negatives and increasing the overall accuracy.

Evaluation of deceptive mails using filtering & WEKA

Knee rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the highly prevalent, chronic, progressive condition in the world. To diagnose this disease in the early stage in detail analysis with magnetic resonance (MR) image is possible. The imaging modality feature allows unbiased assessment of joint space narrowing (JSN), cartilage volume, and other vital features. This provides a fine-grained RA severity evaluation of the knee, contrasted to the benchmark, and generally used Kellgren Lawrence (KL) assessment. In this research, an intelligent system is developed to predict KL grade from the knee dataset. Our approach is based on hybrid deep learning of 50 layers (ResNet50) with skip connections. The proposed approach also uses Adam optimizer to provide learning linearity in the training stage. Our approach yields KL grade and JSN for femoral and tibial tissue with lateral and medial compartments. Furthermore, the approach also yields area under curve (AUC) of 0.98, accuracy 96.85%, mean absolute error (MAE) 0.015, precision 98.31%, and other commonly used parameters for the existence of radiographic RA progression which is improved than the existing state-of-the-art.
