Journal Article
Prevention of Fatal Postoperative pulmonary embolism by low doses of heparin. Reappraisal of results of international multicentre trial.
TL;DR: Exclusion of data from the one centre did not alter already published significant differences in the total incidence of deep-vein thrombosis, nor in the frequency of operative and post-operative bleeding complications observed in the control group and the heparin group.
Journal ArticleDOI
EFFICACY OF LOW DOSES OF HEPARIN IN PREVENTION OF DEEP-VEIN THROMBOSIS AFTER MAJOR SURGERY: A Double-blind, Randomised Trial
Vijay V. Kakkar,Spindler Jj,P.T. Flute,T. P. Corrigan,D. P. Fossard,R. Q. Crellin,S. Wessler,E.T. Yin +7 more
TL;DR: In this article, the prophylactic efficacy of low-dose heparin (5000 units subcutaneously begun two hours preoperatively and continued every twelve hours for seven days) was investigated in 78 " high-risk " patients over the age of forty undergoing major surgery.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevention of fatal postoperative pulmonary embolism by low-dose heparin.
U F Gruber,François Duckert,R. Fridrich,Josef Rem,Joachim Torhorst,Vijay V. Kakkar,T. P. Corrigan,D. P. Fossard,I. Sutherland,J. Thirlwell +9 more
TL;DR: Data exclusion did not significantly alter the total incidence of deep-vein thrombosis nor of bleeding complications observed in both groups postoperatively, and none of the heparin-treated subjects died from postoperative pulmonary embolism.
Journal ArticleDOI
Phlebography in the management of pulmonary embolism.
T. P. Corrigan,D. P. Fossard,Spindler Jj,P. Armstrong,C. J. L. Strachan,K. W. Johnston,Vijay V. Kakkar +6 more
TL;DR: Phlebography was of considerable help in deciding whether to give anticoagulant therapy and in all 7 patients where pulmonary angiography confirmed the presence of extensive emboli, phlebograms showed thrombi in the peripheral veins.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fibrinolytic activity and postoperative deep-vein thrombosis.
TL;DR: Although phenformin and ethylœstrenol produced a significant shortening of the dilute blood-clot lysis-time, there was no difference in the incidence of D.V.T. in the two groups of patients.
