Alkaline water splitting is an attractive method for sustainable hydrogen production. Owing to the sluggish kinetics of alkaline water reduction and oxidation, it is crucial to understand the mechanism of the hydrogen evolution reaction/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) and construct efficient electrocatalysts based on the structure–activity relationship. This review describes the fundamentals of the alkaline HER and OER, the design of noble and nonnoble HER electrocatalysts with low energy barriers, OER electrocatalysts based on binding energy, electronic structure, lattice oxygen, and surface reconstruction as well as the recent developments of bifunctional HER/OER electrocatalysts. Future perspectives towards alkaline water splitting electrocatalysts are also proposed.

Non‐Noble‐Metal‐Based Electrocatalysts toward the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Over the past decade, the surging interest for higher-energy-density, cheaper, and safer battery technology has spurred tremendous research efforts in the development of improved rechargeable zinc-air batteries. Current zinc-air batteries suffer from poor energy efficiency and cycle life, owing mainly to the poor rechargeability of zinc and air electrodes. To achieve high utilization and cyclability in the zinc anode, construction of conductive porous framework through elegant optimization strategies and adaptation of alternate active material are employed. Equally, there is a need to design new and improved bifunctional oxygen catalysts with high activity and stability to increase battery energy efficiency and lifetime. Efforts to engineer catalyst materials to increase the reactivity and/or number of bifunctional active sites are effective for improving air electrode performance. Here, recent key advances in material development for rechargeable zinc-air batteries are described. By improving fundamental understanding of materials properties relevant to the rechargeable zinc and air electrodes, zinc-air batteries will be able to make a significant impact on the future energy storage for electric vehicle application. To conclude, a brief discussion on noteworthy concepts of advanced electrode and electrolyte systems that are beyond the current state-of-the-art zinc-air battery chemistry, is presented.

Recent Progress in Electrically Rechargeable Zinc–Air Batteries

The active sites of heterogeneous catalysts can be difficult to identify and understand, and, hence, the introduction of active sites into catalysts to tailor their function is challenging. During the past two decades, scaling relationships have been established for important heterogeneous catalytic reactions. More specifically, a physical or chemical property of the reaction system, termed as a reactivity descriptor, scales with another property often in a linear manner, which can describe and/or predict the catalytic performance. In this Review, we describe scaling relationships and reactivity descriptors for heterogeneous catalysis, including electronic descriptors represented by d-band theory, structural descriptors, which can be directly applied to catalyst design, and, ultimately, universal descriptors. The prediction of trends in catalytic performance using reactivity descriptors can enable the rational design of catalysts and the efficient screening of high-throughput catalysts. Finally, we outline methods to break scaling relationships and, hence, to break the constraint that active sites pose on the catalytic performance. Recently, scaling relationships have been established between certain physical or chemical properties of heterogeneous catalytic reactions. These properties, or reactivity descriptors, can describe and predict catalytic performance, and thus enable the rational design of new catalysts.

Theory-guided design of catalytic materials using scaling relationships and reactivity descriptors

Aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) as a bioplastics monomer is efficiently promoted by a simple system based on a nonprecious-metal catalyst of MnO2 and NaHCO3. Kinetic studies indicate that the oxidation of 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) to FDCA is the slowest step for the aerobic oxidation of HMF to FDCA over activated MnO2. We demonstrate through combined computational and experimental studies that HMF oxidation to FDCA is largely dependent on the MnO2 crystal structure. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that vacancy formation energies at the planar oxygen sites in α- and γ-MnO2 are higher than those at the bent oxygen sites. β- and λ-MnO2 consist of only planar and bent oxygen sites, respectively, with lower vacancy formation energies. Consequently, β- and λ-MnO2 are likely to be good candidates as oxidation catalysts. On the other hand, experimental studies reveal that the reaction rates per surface area for the slowest step (FFCA oxidation to FDCA) decrease in the order of β-MnO2 > λ-MnO2 > γ-MnO2 ≈ α-MnO2 > δ-MnO2 > e-MnO2; the catalytic activity of β-MnO2 exceeds that of the previously reported activated MnO2 by three times. The order is in good agreement not only with the DFT calculation results, but also with the reduction rates per surface area determined by the H2-temperature-programmed reduction measurements for MnO2 catalysts. The successful synthesis of high-surface-area β-MnO2 significantly improves the catalytic activity for the aerobic oxidation of HMF to FDCA.

Effect of MnO2 Crystal Structure on Aerobic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid.

Highly active and durable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts have been of pivotal importance for renewable energy conversion and storage devices, such as unitized regenerative fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Perovskite-based oxygen electrocatalysts have emerged as promising nonprecious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts, yet their catalytic activity and stability still remain to be improved. We report a high-performance oxygen electrocatalyst based on a triple perovskite, Nd1.5Ba1.5CoFeMnO9-δ (NBCFM), which shows superior activity and durability for oxygen electrode reactions to single and double perovskites. When hybridized with nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO), the resulting NBCFM/N-rGO catalyst shows further boosted bifunctional oxygen electrode activity (0.698 V), which surpasses that of Pt/C (0.801 V) and Ir/C (0.769 V) catalysts and which, among the perovskite-based electrocatalysts, is the best activity reported to date. The superior catalytic performances of NBCFM could be correlated to its oxygen defect-rich structure, lower charge transfer resistance, and smaller hybridization strength between O 2p and Co 3d orbitals.

Oxygen-deficient triple perovskites as highly active and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen electrode reactions

Topotactic phase transformation enables structural transition without losing the crystalline symmetry of the parental phase and provides an effective platform for elucidating the redox reaction and oxygen diffusion within transition metal oxides. In addition, it enables tuning of the emergent physical properties of complex oxides, through strong interaction between the lattice and electronic degrees of freedom. In this communication, the electronic structure evolution of SrFeOx epitaxial thin films is identified in real-time, during the progress of reversible topotactic phase transformation. Using real-time optical spectroscopy, the phase transition between the two structurally distinct phases (i.e., brownmillerite and perovskite) is quantitatively monitored, and a pressure–temperature phase diagram of the topotactic transformation is constructed for the first time. The transformation at relatively low temperatures is attributed to a markedly small difference in Gibbs free energy compared to the known similar class of materials to date. This study highlights the phase stability and reversibility of SrFeOx thin films, which is highly relevant for energy and environmental applications exploiting the redox reactions.

Topotactic Metal-Insulator Transition in Epitaxial SrFeOx Thin Films.

Transition-metal oxides (TMOs) with brownmillerite (BM) structures possess one-dimensional oxygen vacancy channels (OVCs), which play a key role in realizing high ionic conduction at low temperatures. The controllability of the vacancy channel orientation, thus, possesses a great potential for practical applications and would provide a better visualization of the diffusion pathways of ions in TMOs. In this study, the orientations of the OVCs in BM-SrFeO2.5 are stabilized along two crystallographic directions of the epitaxial thin films. The distinctively orientated phases are found to be highly stable and exhibit a considerable difference in their electronic structures and optical properties, which could be understood in terms of orbital anisotropy. The control of the OVC orientation further leads to modifications in the hydrogenation of the BM-SrFeO2.5 thin films. The results demonstrate a strong correlation between crystallographic orientations, electronic structures, and ionic motion in the BM structure.
