Journal ArticleDOI
The rise of toxic benthic Phormidium proliferations: A review of their taxonomy, distribution, toxin content and factors regulating prevalence and increased severity
TL;DR: A combination of factors including; changes to riparian margins, increased nitrate and fine sediment loads, and alterations in flow regimes are likely to have contributed to the rise in Phormidium proliferations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Entrapped Sediments as a Source of Phosphorus in Epilithic Cyanobacterial Proliferations in Low Nutrient Rivers.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that photosynthetic activity results in elevated pH (>9) during daytime, and that night-time respiration causes oxygen depletion within mats, which provides evidence that fine sediment can provide a source of phosphorus to support Phormidium growth and proliferation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toxic benthic freshwater cyanobacterial proliferations: Challenges and solutions for enhancing knowledge and improving monitoring and mitigation
Susanna A. Wood,Laura T. Kelly,Keith Bouma-Gregson,Jean-François Humbert,Haywood Dail Laughinghouse,James M. Lazorchak,Tara G. McAllister,Andrew McQueen,Kaytee Pokrzywinski,Jonathan Puddick,Catherine Quiblier,Catherine Quiblier,Laura A. Reitz,Ken G. Ryan,Yvonne Vadeboncoeur,Arthur Zastepa,Timothy W. Davis +16 more
TL;DR: This review summarises knowledge on the ecology, toxin production, and impacts of toxic freshwater benthic cyanobacterial proliferations, and documents monitoring, management, and sampling strategies, and explores mitigation options.
Journal ArticleDOI
The Pakaru ‘Pipeline’: Māori and Pasifika Pathways within the Academy
Sereana Naepi,Tara G. McAllister,Patrick Thomsen,Marcia Leenen-Young,Leilani A. Walker,Anna L McAllister,Reremoana Theodore,Joanna Kidman,Tamasailau Suaaliia +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine the academic pipeline for Māori and Pasifika graduates and illustrate the chronic underrepresentation of Makea and Papanikolaou in permanent academic positions in New Zealand universities.
Journal ArticleDOI
Under-represented and overlooked: Māori and Pasifika scientists in Aotearoa New Zealand’s universities and crown-research institutes
TL;DR: The authors provided insights into the ethnicity of people employed in Aotearoa New Zealand's publicly-funded scientific workforce, with a particular focus on Māori and Pasifika scientists.
