Journal ArticleDOI
Medusozoan Phylogeny and Character Evolution Clarified by New Large and Small Subunit rDNA Data and an Assessment of the Utility of Phylogenetic Mixture Models
Allen Gilbert Collins,Peter Schuchert,Antonio C. Marques,Thomas Jankowski,Mónica Medina,Bernd Schierwater +5 more
TL;DR: A newly compiled data set of nearly complete sequences of the large subunit of the nuclear ribosome (LSU or 28S) sampled from 31 diverse medusozoans greatly clarifies the phylogenetic history of Cnidaria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Consequences of the 2003 European heat wave for lake temperature profiles, thermal stability, and hypolimnetic oxygen depletion: Implications for a warmer world
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a set of over half a century of lake data from two lakes in Switzerland to assess how temperate lakes will react when exposed to the increased ambient summer air temperatures that will be encountered in a generally warmer world and to test the predictions of relevant simulation models.
Journal ArticleDOI
Large-scale climatic signatures in lakes across Europe: a meta-analysis
Thorsten Blenckner,Rita Adrian,David M. Livingstone,Eleanor Jennings,Gesa A. Weyhenmeyer,D. Glen George,Thomas Jankowski,Marko Järvinen,Caitriona Nic Aonghusa,Tiina Nõges,Dietmar Straile,Katrin Teubner +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors used meta-analysis techniques to test whether 18 lakes in northern, western, and central Europe respond coherently to winter climate forcing, and to assess the persistence of the winter climate signal in physical, chemical, and biological variables during the year.
Journal ArticleDOI
Twenty years of spatially coherent deepwater warming in lakes across Europe related to the North Atlantic Oscillation
Martin T. Dokulil,Albert Jagsch,Glen George,Orlane Anneville,Thomas Jankowski,Bernd Wahl,Brigitte Lenhart,Thorsten Blenckner,Katrin Teubner +8 more
TL;DR: In this article, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index for January-May was used as the most consistent predictor of hypolimnetic temperature in 12 deep lakes across Europe.
Journal ArticleDOI
The impact of human-made ecological changes on the genetic architecture of Daphnia species.
Nora Brede,Christoph Sandrock,Dietmar Straile,Piet Spaak,Thomas Jankowski,Bruno Streit,Klaus Schwenk +6 more
TL;DR: This work reconstructed the genetic architecture of a Daphnia species complex in 2 European lakes using diapausing eggs that were isolated from sediment layers covering the past 100 years to demonstrate that anthropogenically induced temporal alterations of habitats are associated with long-lasting changes in communities and species.
