TL;DR: This survey article reviews and compares the properties of the existing key establishment techniques, QKD being one of them, and studies two generic scenarios related to the practical use of QKKD in cryptographic infrastructures: 1) usingQKD as a key renewal technique for a symmetric cipher over a point-to-point link; 2) using QD in a network containing many users with the objective of offering any- to-any key establishment service.

Romain Alléaume,Jan Bouda,Cyril Branciard,Thierry Debuisschert,Mehrdad Dianati,Nicolas Gisin,M. S. Godfrey,Philippe Grangier,Thomas Länger,Anthony Leverrier,Norbert Lütkenhaus,Philippe Painchault,Momtchil Peev,Andreas Poppe,Thomas Pornin,John Rarity,Renato Renner,Grégoire Ribordy,Michel Riguidel,Louis Salvail,Andrew J. Shields,Harald Weinfurter,Anton Zeilinger +22 more
TL;DR: It is detailed how the work on QKD networks lead within SECOQC will allow the deployment of long-distance secure communication infrastructures based on quantum cryptography, and what may be the next challenges in this direction.

Using quantum key distribution for cryptographic purposes: a survey
Romain Alléaume,Cyril Branciard,Jan Bouda,Thierry Debuisschert,Mehrdad Dianati,Nicolas Gisin,M. S. Godfrey,Philippe Grangier,Thomas Länger,Norbert Lütkenhaus,Christian Monyk,Philippe Painchault,Momtchil Peev,Andreas Poppe,Thomas Pornin,John Rarity,Renato Renner,Grégoire Ribordy,Michel Riguidel,Louis Salvail,Andrew J. Shields,Harald Weinfurter,Anton Zeilinger +22 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a survey of QKD in security infrastructures, which is mostly centered on European research results, and discuss the constraints as well as the potential interest of using QKDs in these contexts.

Quantum key distribution and cryptography: a survey

TL;DR: I will try to partially answer, based on a review on recent work, the following question: Can QKD and more generally quantum information be useful to cover some practical security requirements in current (and future) IT infrastructures?
