Energy storage devices that can deliver high powers have many applications, including hybrid vehicles and renewable energy. Much research has focused on increasing the power output of lithium batteries by reducing lithium-ion diffusion distances, but outputs remain far below those of electrochemical capacitors and below the levels required for many applications. Here, we report an alternative approach based on the redox reactions of functional groups on the surfaces of carbon nanotubes. Layer-by-layer techniques are used to assemble an electrode that consists of additive-free, densely packed and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes. The electrode, which is several micrometres thick, can store lithium up to a reversible gravimetric capacity of approximately 200 mA h g(-1)(electrode) while also delivering 100 kW kg(electrode)(-1) of power and providing lifetimes in excess of thousands of cycles, both of which are comparable to electrochemical capacitor electrodes. A device using the nanotube electrode as the positive electrode and lithium titanium oxide as a negative electrode had a gravimetric energy approximately 5 times higher than conventional electrochemical capacitors and power delivery approximately 10 times higher than conventional lithium-ion batteries.

High-Power Lithium Batteries from Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Electrodes

Over the past decades, Li-ion battery (LIB) has turned into one of the most important advances in the history of technology due to its extensive and in-depth impact on our life. Its omnipresence in all electric vehicles, consumer electronics and electric grids relies on the precisely tuned electrochemical dynamics and interactions among the electrolytes and the diversified anode and cathode chemistries therein. With consumers' demand for battery performance ever increasing, more and more stringent requirements are being imposed upon the established equilibria among these LIB components, and it became clear that the state-of-the-art electrolyte systems could no longer sustain the desired technological trajectory. Driven by such gap, researchers started to explore more unconventional electrolyte systems. From superconcentrated solvent-in-salt electrolytes to solid-state electrolytes, the current research realm of novel electrolyte systems has grown to unprecedented levels. In this review, we will avoid discussions on current state-of-the-art electrolytes but instead focus exclusively on unconventional electrolyte systems that represent new concepts.

New Concepts in Electrolytes.

Solid state electrolyte systems boasting Li+ conductivity of >10 mS cm−1 at room temperature have opened the potential for developing a solid state battery with power and energy densities that are competitive with conventional liquid electrolyte systems. The primary focus of this review is twofold. First, differences in Li penetration resistance in solid state systems are discussed, and kinetic limitations of the solid state interface are highlighted. Second, technological challenges associated with processing such systems in relevant form factors are elucidated, and architectures needed for cell level devices in the context of product development are reviewed. Specific research vectors that provide high value to advancing solid state batteries are outlined and discussed.

Review—Practical Challenges Hindering the Development of Solid State Li Ion Batteries

Ni-based metal organic frameworks (Ni-MOFs) with unique hierarchical hollow ball-in-ball nanostructure were synthesized by solvothermal reactions. After successive carbonization and oxidation treatments, hierarchical NiO/Ni nanocrystals covered with a graphene shell were obtained with the hollow ball-in-ball nanostructure intact. The resulting materials exhibited superior performance as the anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs): they provide high reversible specific capacity (1144 mAh/g), excellent cyclability (nearly no capacity loss after 1000 cycles) and rate performance (805 mAh/g at 15 A/g). In addition, the hierarchical NiO/Ni/Graphene composites demonstrated promising performance as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Such a superior lithium and sodium storage performance is derived from the well-designed hierarchical hollow ball-in-ball structure of NiO/Ni/Graphene composites, which not only mitigates the volume expansion of NiO during the cycles but also provides a continuous highly conductive graphene matrix to facilitate the fast charge transfer and form a stable SEI layer.

Theoretical Calculation Guided Design of Single-Atom Catalysts toward Fast Kinetic and Long-Life Li-S Batteries.

Accelerated conversion by catalysis is a promising way to inhibit shuttling of soluble polysulfides in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, but most of the reported catalysts work only for one direction sulfur reaction (reduction or oxidation), which is still not a root solution since fast cycled use of sulfur species is not finally realized A bidirectional catalyst design, oxide-sulfide heterostructure, is proposed to accelerate both reduction of soluble polysulfides and oxidation of insoluble discharge products (eg, Li2 S), indicating a fundamental way for improving both the cycling stability and sulfur utilization Typically, a TiO2 -Ni3 S2 heterostructure is prepared by in situ growing TiO2 nanoparticles on Ni3 S2 surface and the intimately bonded interfaces are the key for bidirectional catalysis For reduction, TiO2 traps while Ni3 S2 catalytically converts polysulfides For oxidation, TiO2 and Ni3 S2 both show catalytic activity for Li2 S dissolution, refreshing the catalyst surface The produced sulfur cathode with TiO2 -Ni3 S2 delivers a low capacity decay of 0038% per cycle for 900 cycles at 05C and specially, with a sulfur loading of 39 mg cm-2 , achieves a high capacity retention of 65% over 500 cycles at 03C This work unlocks how a bidirectional catalyst works for boosting Li-S batteries approaching practical uses

Bidirectional Catalysts for Liquid–Solid Redox Conversion in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Interface Engineering for Lithium Metal Anodes in Liquid Electrolyte

Engineering of 3D graphene/metal composites with ultrasmall sized metal and robust metal-graphene interfacial interaction for energy storage application is still a challenge and rarely reported. In this work, a facile top-down strategy is developed for the preparation of SnSb-in-plane nanoconfined 3D N-doped porous graphene networks for sodium ion battery anodes, which are composed of several tens of interconnected empty N-graphene boxes in-plane firmly embedded with ultrasmall SnSb nanocrystals. The all-around encapsulation (plane-to-plane contact) architecture that provides a large interface between N-graphene and SnSb nanocrystal not only effectively enhances the electron conductivity and structural integrity of the overall electrode, but also offers excess interfacial sodium storage, thus leading to much enhanced high-rate sodium storage capacity and stability, which has been proven by both experimental results and first-principles simulations. Moreover, this top-down strategy can enable new paths to the low-cost and high-yield synthesis of 3D graphene/metal composites for applications in energy-related fields and beyond.
