Humanity already possesses the fundamental scientific, technical, and industrial know-how to solve the carbon and climate problem for the next half-century. A portfolio of technologies now exists to meet the world's energy needs over the next 50 years and limit atmospheric CO2 to a trajectory that avoids a doubling of the preindustrial concentration. Every element in this portfolio has passed beyond the laboratory bench and demonstration project; many are already implemented somewhere at full industrial scale. Although no element is a credible candidate for doing the entire job (or even half the job) by itself, the portfolio as a whole is large enough that not every element has to be used.

Magnetorheological elastomers (MREs) are a class of recently emerged smart materials whose moduli are largely influenced when exposed to an external magnetic field. The MREs are particulate composites, where micro-sized magnetic particles are dispersed inside a non-magnetic polymeric matrix. These elastomers are known for changing their mechanical and rheological properties in the presence of a magnetic field. This change in properties is widely known as the magnetorheological (MR) effect. The MR effect depends on a number of factors such as type of matrix materials, type, concentration and distribution of magnetic particles, use of additives, working modes, and magnetic field strength. The investigation of MREs’ mechanical properties in both off-field and on-field (i.e. absence and presence of a magnetic field) is crucial to deploy them in real engineering applications. The common magneto-mechanical characterization experiments of MREs include static and dynamic compression, tensile, and shear tests in both off-field and on-field. This review article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the magneto-mechanical characterizations of MREs along with brief coverage of the MRE materials and their fabrication methods.

A review on magneto-mechanical characterizations of magnetorheological elastomers

textCurrently, companies spend a great deal of effort on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) disclosures. CSR disclosure relates to the provision of information on companies' environmental and social performance. From an economic perspective, companies might disclose this information to avoid or decrease potential political costs. We construct a CSR disclosure index based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guidelines. Using content analysis, we analyze 130 listed German companies' CSR disclosures (470 firm-year observations) to investigate the determinants of these voluntary disclosure activities. Our results show that, consistent with the political cost theory, German companies' disclosures of all CSR issues are affected by their visibility, shareholder structure, and relationship with their US stakeholders. In addition, higher profitability is associated with more environmental disclosures. Finally, size and industry membership affect the amount of CSR disclosure.

A review on the fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing: Filament processing, materials, and printing parameters

Polymer composites have been widely used as damping materials in various applications due to the ability of reducing the vibrations. However, the environmental and surrounding thermal exposure towards polymer composites have affected their mechanical properties and lifecycle. Therefore, this paper presents the effect of material-temperature dependence on the loss factor and phase shift angle characteristics. Two types of unageing and aging silicone-rubber-based magnetorheological elastomer (SR-MRE) with different concentrations of carbonyl iron particles (CIPs), 30 and 60 wt%, are utilized in this study. The morphological, magnetic, and rheological properties related to the loss factor and phase shift angle are characterized using a low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometer and rheometer, respectively. The morphological analysis of SR-MRE consisting of 30 wt% CIPs revealed a smoother surface area when compared to 60 wt% CIPs after thermal aging due to the improvement of CIPs dispersion in the presence of heat. Nevertheless, the rheological analysis demonstrated inimitable rheological properties due to different in-rubber structures, shear deformation condition, as well as the influence of magnetic field. No significant changes of loss factor occurred at a low CIPs concentration, whilst the loss factor increased at a higher CIPs concentration. On that basis, it has been determined that the proposed changes of the polymer chain network due to the long-term temperature exposure of different concentrations of CIPs might explain the unique rheological properties of the unaged and aged SR-MRE.

Loss Factor Behavior of Thermally Aged Magnetorheological Elastomers.

The role of MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) are to improve the economy and reduce the unemployment in Indonesia is widely significant regarding to the growth of MSME growth in every year. However, MSMEs often find some problem which obstruct its business growth especially about the ffunding. The phenomena that exist today, many MSMEs only using funds/private capital to develop their business with reason their business is still in early growth. In fact, instead in early growth, MSMEs must do the innovation in order to be more competitive in the marketplace. In 2015, Indonesia was starting to face Asean Economic Community (AEC) where as the market competition will be more competitive for MSMEs. Therefore, to provide private capital also required other capital (loans) from third parties to fund the business growth of MSMEs. The reason why  MSMEs do not make loans from other parties is about the unavailability of the financial statements based on SAK ETAP which can facilitate to access bank lending. Unavailability of financial statements in accordance with SAK ETAP on MSMEs has several factors, namely, costs are relatively expensive to pay for experts in the field of accounting, a lack of understanding in presenting financial statement based on SAK ETAP and the perceptions of MSMEs that considesr the financial statements are not urgency to do. This research aims to obtain empirical evidences whether the giving of information and socialization, educational background, level of education, size of enterprises and long effect on the understanding of MSMes in presenting financial statements based on SAK ETAP on MSMEs. The object in this study is MSMEs in Palembang city with number of respondents of 40 MSMEs with characteristics of small and medium enterprises. Data retrieval in this study using a questionnaire which is then processed using logistic regression analysis. The results of the study prove that giving information and socialization, educational background, level of education and business size do not affect on the understanding of MSMes in presenting financial statements based on the SAK ETAP on MSMEs. Only long effect affect on the understandability of MESMEs in presenting the financial statement.

Factors Affecting Understandibility of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises in Preparation of Financial Statement Based on SAK ETAP in Palembang

Filler additive is used to provide superior bonding in rubber matrix to enhance the storage modulus of magnetorheological elastomer (MRE). However, the magneto-induced modulus is reduced as the initial storage modulus increases. Therefore, this paper aims to increase the magneto-induced modulus and maintain the initial storage modulus by combining filler and plasticizer additives. Both types of additives have different functions, where cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) is capable of enhancing the maximum storage modulus and silicone oil (SO) reduces the initial storage modulus. Thus, four MRE samples have been fabricated using (a) no additive, (b) CoFe2O4, (c) SO, and (d) a combination of CoFe2O4 and SO. The sample’s hardness and magnetic properties were investigated via Durometer Shore A and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), respectively. Furthermore, the rheological properties of MRE samples in terms of storage modulus were investigated upon the frequency and magnetic field sweep using a rheometer. The results demonstrated that the storage modulus of the MRE samples has increased with increasing the oscillation frequency from 0.1 to 50 Hz. Interestingly, the combination of additives has produced the largest value of magneto-induced modulus of 0.90 MPa as compared to other samples. Furthermore, their initial storage modulus was in between samples with SO (lowest) and without additive (highest). Therefore, fundamental knowledge in adding the combination of additives can offer solutions for a wide range of stiffness in MR device applications such as vibration and noise control devices, sensing devices, and actuators.

Enhancement of Magneto-Induced Modulus by the Combination of Filler and Plasticizer Additives-Based Magnetorheological Elastomer

Many studies focus on the torque-to-dimension ratio when designing magnetorheological brakes (MRB), especially for ankle foot orthosis (AFO) devices. Vane MRB is one type of MRB with a limited angle of motion that is naturally suitable to be applied to AFO. However, very few implement quality function deployment (QFD) when making MRB, whereas QFD is an essential factor in making product designs. In this study, a tiny vane-type MR brake (TVMRB) was successfully made using the QFD method. Torque characteristics are determined by analysis of magnetic flux density, theoretically, by 3D simulation, and by using Ansys Maxwell experimentally. For consideration, the analysis was carried out with fluid gap variations (0.5 mm, 0.75 mm, and 1 mm) and current variations (0.5–2 A with 0.5 A increments). As a result, ignoring the leakage of MR fluid (MRF), at a constant rotation of 10 rpm, the smallest torque of 6.14 Nm was obtained at the fluid gap variation of 1 mm and input current of 0.5 A, whereas the largest torque was 46.71 Nm at the fluid gap variation of 0.5 mm and input current of 2 A. Apart from torque, this article will also discuss other brake performances in the form of operational range and power consumption. Finally, the structure of the TVMRB design is compared with other designs presented in the House of Quality (HOQ).
