Dietary Uptake and Biological Effects of Decabromodiphenyl Ether in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
TL;DR: Dietary uptake and biological effects of decabromodiphenyl ether in the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) are studied.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence for endocrine disruption in perch (Perca fluviatilis) and roach (Rutilus rutilus) in a remote Swedish lake in the vicinity of a public refuse dump
TL;DR: The reproductive disorders observed indicates disturbed endocrine function(s), arresting the majority of the female perch in a sexually nonreproducible immature stage, the first to report evidence for endocrine disruption in wild populations of fish living in a lake exposed to leakage water from a public refuse dump.
Journal ArticleDOI
Wild birds of declining European species are dying from a thiamine deficiency syndrome
Lennart Balk,Per-Ake Hägerroth,Gun Åkerman,Marsha Hanson,Ulla Tjärnlund,Tomas Hansson,Gunnar Thor Hallgrimsson,Yngve Zebühr,Dag Broman,Torsten Mörner,Henrik Sundberg +10 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors demonstrate strong relationships between idiopathic paralytic disease, breeding failure, and thiamine deficiency in eggs, pulli, and full-grown individuals.
Journal ArticleDOI
Widespread episodic thiamine deficiency in Northern Hemisphere wildlife
Lennart Balk,Per-Ake Hägerroth,Hanna Gustavsson,Lisa Sigg,Gun Åkerman,Yolanda Ruiz Muñoz,Dale C. Honeyfield,Ulla Tjärnlund,Kenneth Oliveira,Karin Ström,Stephen D. McCormick,Simon Karlsson,Simon Karlsson,Marika Ström,Marika Ström,Mathijs van Manen,Mathijs van Manen,Anna-Lena Berg,Halldór P. Halldórsson,Jennie Strömquist,Tracy K. Collier,Hans Börjeson,Torsten Mörner,Tomas Hansson +23 more
TL;DR: The problem of thiamine deficiency is considerably more widespread and severe than previously reported and linked to secondary effects on growth, condition, liver size, blood chemistry and composition, histopathology, swimming behaviour and endurance, parasite infestation, and reproduction.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biochemical biomarkers in adult female perch (Perca fluviatilis) in a chronically polluted gradient in the Stockholm recipient (Sweden)
Tomas Hansson,Doris Schiedek,Kari K. Lehtonen,Pekka J. Vuorinen,Birgitta Liewenborg,Erik Noaksson,Ulla Tjärnlund,Marsha Hanson,Lennart Balk +8 more
TL;DR: An assumed aquatic pollution gradient was confirmed, with the city of Stockholm as a point source of anthropogenic substances, with poor health status of the perch: retarded growth, increased frequency of sexually immature females, low gonadosomatic index, and disturbed visceral fat metabolism.
