Worldwide Phylogeography of Wild Boar Reveals Multiple Centers of Pig Domestication
Greger Larson,Keith Dobney,Umberto Albarella,Meiying Fang,Elizabeth Matisoo-Smith,Judith H. Robins,Stewart Lowden,Heather Finlayson,Tina B. Brand,Eske Willerslev,Peter Rowley-Conwy,Leif Andersson,Alan Cooper +12 more
TL;DR: Analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences from 686 wild and domestic pig specimens reveals multiple centers of domestication across Eurasia and that European, rather than Near Eastern, wild boar are the principal source of modern European domestic pigs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ancient DNA, pig domestication, and the spread of the Neolithic into Europe
Greger Larson,Umberto Albarella,Keith Dobney,Peter Rowley-Conwy,Joerg Schibler,Anne Tresset,Jean-Denis Vigne,Ceiridwen J. Edwards,Angela Schlumbaum,Alexandru Dinu,Adrian Balacsescu,Gaynor Dolman,Antonio Tagliacozzo,Ninna Manaseryan,Preston T. Miracle,Louise H. Van Wijngaarden-Bakker,Marco Masseti,Daniel G. Bradley,Alan Cooper +18 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that domestic pigs of Near Eastern ancestry were definitely introduced into Europe during the Neolithic (potentially along two separate routes), reaching the Paris Basin by at least the early 4th millennium B.C.
Journal ArticleDOI
Animal origin of 13th-century uterine vellum revealed using noninvasive peptide fingerprinting.
Sarah Fiddyment,Bruce Holsinger,Chiara Ruzzier,Alexander Devine,Annelise Binois,Umberto Albarella,Roman Fischer,Emma Nichols,Antoinette E. Curtis,Edward Cheese,Matthew D. Teasdale,Caroline Checkley-Scott,Stephen J. Milner,Kathryn M. Rudy,Eric J. Johnson,Jiří Vnouček,Mary Garrison,Simon McGrory,Daniel G. Bradley,Matthew J. Collins +19 more
TL;DR: The first use, to the authors' knowledge, of triboelectric extraction of protein from parchment is reported, which suggests that ultrafine vellum does not necessarily derive from the use of abortive or newborn animals with ultrathin hides, but could equally well reflect a production process that allowed the skins of maturing animals of several species to be rendered into vellums of equal quality and fineness.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cattle mobility in prehistoric Britain: strontium isotope analysis of cattle teeth from Durrington Walls (Wiltshire, Britain)
TL;DR: In this article, the results of an investigation into the mobility of Late Neolithic cattle at the well-known site of Durrington Walls, Wiltshire were presented, which suggested that cattle were brought to the site from a variety of grazing areas in different parts of Britain.
Journal ArticleDOI
Size and shape of the Eurasian wild boar (Sus scrofa), with a view to the reconstruction of its Holocene history
TL;DR: It is shown that not only the size, but also the shape of teeth and mandibles can help in highlighting patterns of variability in wild boar from different areas, and the morphological history of the species appears to be complex.
