The metallic vanadium has an excellent hydrogen storage properties in comparison to other hydride forming metals such as titanium, uranium, and zirconium. The gravimetric storage capacity of vanadium is over 4 wt% which is even better than AB2 and AB5 alloys. The metallic vanadium has shown high hydrogen solubility and diffusivity at nominal temperature and pressure conditions. Consequently, vanadium is under consideration for the cost-effective hydrogen permeation membrane to replace palladium. The issues with vanadium are poor reversibility and pulverization. The poor reversibility is because of high thermal stability of β (VH/V2H) phase which eventually restricts the cyclic hydrogen storage capacity up to 2 wt% at room temperature. The pulverization is because of large crystal misfit between the metal and metal hydride phase. The hydrogen solubility, phase stability, hydrogenation-dehydrogenation kinetics, and pulverization are highly influenced by the presence of an alloying element. Therefore, worldwide efforts are to explore and optimize the alloying element which could enhance the hydrogen solubility, destabilized the β phase, improved the hydrogenation-dehydrogenation kinetics, and prevent the pulverization. The current review is a systematic presentation of these efforts to resolve the issues of vanadium as a base material for hydrogen storage and permeation membrane.

Development of vanadium based hydrogen storage material: A review

The effect of K2SiF6 on the MgH2 hydrogen storage properties

Magnesium hydride and its compounds have a high hydrogen storage capacity and are inexpensive, and thus have been considered as one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials for on-board applications. Nevertheless, Mg/MgH2 systems suffer from great drawbacks in terms of kinetics and thermodynamics for hydrogen uptake/release. Over the past decades, although significant progress has been achieved with respect to hydrogen sorption kinetics in Mg/MgH2 systems, their high thermal stability remains the main drawback, which hinders their practical applications. Accordingly, herein, we present a brief summary of the synthetic routes and a comprehensive overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the promising strategies to effectively tune the thermodynamics of Mg-based materials, such as alloying, nanostructuring, metastable phase formation, changing reaction pathway, and nano Mg-based composites. Among them nanostructuring and metastable phase formation, which have the superiority of changing the thermodynamics without affecting the hydrogen capacity, have attracted increasing interest in this field. To further optimize the hydrogen storage performance, we specially emphasize novel nanostructured materials, which have the advantage of combining alloy engineering, nanostructuring and the synergistic effect to change the thermodynamics of Mg/MgH2 to some extent. Furthermore, the remaining challenges and the directions of further research on MgH2, including the fundamental mechanism of the Mg–H bond instability, advanced synthetic routes, stabilizing nanostructures, and predicting novel composite materials, are proposed.

Recent advances on the thermal destabilization of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials

The search for suitable materials for solid-state stationary storage of green hydrogen is pushing the implementation of efficient renewable energy systems. This involves rational design and modification of cheap alloys for effective storage in mild conditions of temperature and pressure. Among many intermetallic compounds described in the literature, TiFe-based systems have recently regained vivid interest as materials for practical applications since they are low-cost and they can be tuned to match required pressure and operation conditions. This work aims to provide a comprehensive review of publications involving chemical substitution in TiFe-based compounds for guiding compound design and materials selection in current and future hydrogen storage applications. Mono- and multi-substituted compounds modify TiFe thermodynamics and are beneficial for many hydrogenation properties. They will be reviewed and deeply discussed, with a focus on manganese substitution.
