Review of Pt-based bimetallic catalysis: from model surfaces to supported catalysts.

Porosity plays a clearly important role in geology. It controls fluid storage in aquifers, oil and gas fields and geothermal systems, and the extent and connectivity of the pore structure control fluid flow and transport through geological formations, as well as the relationship between the properties of individual minerals and the bulk properties of the rock. In order to quantify the relationships between porosity, storage, transport and rock properties, however, the pore structure must be measured and quantitatively described. The overall importance of porosity, at least with respect to the use of rocks as building stone was recognized by TS Hunt in his “Chemical and Geological Essays” (1875, reviewed by JD Dana 1875) who noted:

> “Other things being equal, it may properly be said that the value of a stone for building purposes is inversely as its porosity or absorbing power.”

In a Geological Survey report prepared for the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission, Manger (1963) summarized porosity and bulk density measurements for sedimentary rocks. He tabulated more than 900 items of porosity and bulk density data for sedimentary rocks with up to 2,109 porosity determinations per item. Amongst these he summarized several early studies, including those of Schwarz (1870–1871), Cook (1878), Wheeler (1896), Buckley (1898), Gary (1898), Moore (1904), Fuller (1906), Sorby (1908), Hirschwald (1912), Grubenmann et al. (1915), and Kessler (1919), many of which were concerned with rocks and clays of commercial utility. There have, of course, been many more such determinations since that time.

Reactivity of Surface Species in Heterogeneous Catalysts Probed by In Situ X-ray Absorption Techniques

Nanoscale diamond has recently received considerable attention due to the various possible applications such as luminescence imaging, drug delivery, quantum engineering, surface coatings, seeding etc. For most of these fields a suitable surface termination and functionalization of the diamond materials are required. In this feature article we discuss recent achievements in the field of surface modification of nanoscale diamond including the establishment of a homogeneous initial surface termination, the covalent and non-covalent immobilization of different functional moieties as well as the subsequent grafting of larger (bio)molecules onto previously functionalized nanodiamond.

Functionality is Key: Recent Progress in the Surface Modification of Nanodiamond

Highly stable and reproducible molecular-colloidal water solutions of C60 fullerenes (FWS) obtained by transferring fullerenes from an organic solution into an aqueous phase with the help of ultrasonic treatment are investigated by means of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). A polydispersity in the size of detected particles up to 84 nm is revealed. These particles are slightly anisotropic and have a characteristic size of approximately 70 nm. Along with it, there are some indications that a significant part of fullerenes composes particles with the size of the order of 1 nm. The contrast variation based on mixtures of light and heavy water shows that the mean scattering length density of the particles is close to that of the packed fullerene associates as well as that the characteristic size of possible fluctuations of the scattering length density within the particles does not exceed 2 nm. A smooth surface resulting in the Porod law for the scattering is detected. A number of models discussed in the literature are considered with respect to the SANS data.

Structural features of molecular-colloidal solutions of C60 fullerenes in water by small-angle neutron scattering

A few years ago a high-pressure neutron spectrometer DN-12 was created at the IBR-2 pulsed reactor. Neutron diffraction and inelastic incoherent neutron scattering (with samples having large incoherent neutron scattering cross section) experiments at pressures up to 5 GPa can be performed with the DN-12 using sapphire anvil cells. After first successful experiments, the development of the DN-12 spectrometer was done during last year. The new parameters and recent experiments performed with the DN-12 both before and after modernization are reviewed.

Modern aspects of the kinetic theory of glass transition

A review of experimental and theoretical studies of the formation and growth of clusters in solutions of fullerenes is given. General problems of fullerene cluster formation in solutions are considered. The main directions and goals of studies are specified. The experimental data on solutions with various polarities obtained by various methods, including visible and UV spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, small-angle neutron scattering, mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, etc., are generalized. The conditions of cluster formation and mechanism of cluster stabilization and the role played by clusters in certain effects observed in the corresponding systems are discussed. Cluster growth models are considered on the basis of nucleation theory for solutions of fullerenes with various polarities. It is shown that the description of the observed cluster state requires modification of the kinetic equations of the classic approach using the drop model of clusters. Modified kinetic equations with corrections for the mechanism of cluster stabilization are used to analyze cluster growth and related phenomena.
