Journal ArticleDOI
Variation in fine root biomass of three European tree species: Beech (Fagus sylvatica L.), Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.), and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.)
Leena Finér,Heljä-Sisko Helmisaari,Krista Lõhmus,Hooshang Majdi,Ivano Brunner,Isabella Børja,Toril D. Eldhuset,Douglas L. Godbold,Tine Grebenc,Bohdan Konôpka,Hojka Kraigher,M.-R. Möttönen,Mizue Ohashi,Jacek Oleksyn,Ivika Ostonen,Veiko Uri,Elena Vanguelova +16 more
TL;DR: The results showed that there exists a strong relationship between the fine root biomass and the above-ground biomass, and that the root biomass of deciduous trees is higher than that of conifers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Fine root foraging strategies in Norway spruce forests across a European climate gradient
Ivika Ostonen,Heljä-Sisko Helmisaari,Werner Borken,Leho Tedersoo,Leho Tedersoo,Mai Kukumägi,Mohammad Bahram,Antti-Jussi Lindroos,Pekka Nöjd,Veiko Uri,Päivi Merilä,Endla Asi,Krista Lõhmus +12 more
TL;DR: There was 19% higher proportion of root tips colonized by long-distance exploration type forming EcM fungi in the southern forests indicating importance of EcM symbiont foraging strategy in fine root nutrient acquisition and the importance of complex studies on respective regulatory mechanisms in changing climate.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biomass production and carbon sequestration in a fertile silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) forest chronosequence
TL;DR: In this paper, a study was made of C accumulation both in biomass and in the soil in 6-60-year-old silver birch (Betula pendula) stands growing at fertile (Oxalis) sites.
Journal ArticleDOI
An experimental facility for free air humidity manipulation (FAHM) can alter water flux through deciduous tree canopy
Priit Kupper,Jaak Sober,Arne Sellin,Krista Lõhmus,Arvo Tullus,Olaf Räim,Kristina Lubenets,Ingmar Tulva,Veiko Uri,Martin Zobel,Olevi Kull,Anu Sõber +11 more
TL;DR: A facility for free air humidity manipulation (FAHM) was established to investigate the effect of increased air humidity on trees' performance and their canopy functioning with respect to rising air humidity predicted for Northern Europe.
Journal ArticleDOI
Adaptive root foraging strategies along a boreal-temperate forest gradient.
Ivika Ostonen,Marika Truu,Heljä-Sisko Helmisaari,Martin Lukac,Martin Lukac,Werner Borken,Elena Vanguelova,Douglas L. Godbold,Krista Lõhmus,Ulrich Zang,Leho Tedersoo,Jens-Konrad Preem,Katrin Rosenvald,Jürgen Aosaar,Kęstutis Armolaitis,Jane Frey,Naima Kabral,Mai Kukumägi,Jaana Leppälammi-Kujansuu,Antti-Jussi Lindroos,Päivi Merilä,Ülle Napa,Pekka Nöjd,Kaarin Parts,Veiko Uri,Mats Varik,Jaak Truu +26 more
TL;DR: A concept of absorptive fine root foraging strategies involving both qualitative and quantitative changes in the root-mycorrhiza-bacteria continuum along climate and soil C : N gradients is suggested.
