Aggregation-Induced Emission: Together We Shine, United We Soar!

Luminogenic materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) attributes have attracted much interest since the debut of the AIE concept in 2001. In this critical review, recent progress in the area of AIE research is summarized. Typical examples of AIE systems are discussed, from which their structure–property relationships are derived. Through mechanistic decipherment of the photophysical processes, structural design strategies for generating new AIE luminogens are developed. Technological, especially optoelectronic and biological, applications of the AIE systems are exemplified to illustrate how the novel AIE effect can be utilized for high-tech innovations (183 references).

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are a unique class of crystalline solids comprised of metal cations (or metal clusters) and organic ligands that have shown promise for a wide variety of applications Over the past 15 years, research and development of these materials have become one of the most intensely and extensively pursued areas A very interesting and well-investigated topic is their optical emission properties and related applications Several reviews have provided a comprehensive overview covering many aspects of the subject up to 2011 This review intends to provide an update of work published since then and focuses on the photoluminescence (PL) properties of MOFs and their possible utility in chemical and biological sensing and detection The spectrum of this review includes the origin of luminescence in MOFs, the advantages of luminescent MOF (LMOF) based sensors, general strategies in designing sensory materials, and examples of various applications in sensing and detection

It is generally accepted that ethylene tetrafluoroethylene alternating copolymers (ETFEs) are exceptionally thermal stable materials. However, we found that ETFEs will decompose to some extent when exposed to heat, especially above 300 °C and during a dynamic shear process (thermal mechanical degradation, thermal-stress-oxidation synergistic destruction). In this article, the dynamic mechanical degradation of ETFE was first verified by dynamic rheometry with the aid of IR analysis, then a facile, environmental friendly solution—namely the addition of the antiaging agent N,N′-di-2-naphthyl-p-phenylenediamine (DNP)—was adopted to prevent the degradation. Rotational rheometry and thermogravimetry analysis results proved that this is an applicable strategy. The addition of DNP led to remarkable increases in the initial thermal decomposition temperature, dynamic shear stable duration time, and thermal decomposition activation energy of ETFE without sacrificing its mechanical properties.

A Novel Approach to Prepare Uniaxially Aligned Nanofibers and Longitudinally Aligned Seamless Tubes Through Electrospinning

The stability of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes is one of the most essential issues affecting the performance of fuel cells. The investigation of membrane stability is therefore of significant importance for fuel cell applications. So far, however, the most elaborate research on membrane stability has focused on the commercial Nafion® series, which has a fixed ion exchange capacity (IEC) of 0.91 mmol g−1; there is therefore a lack of systematic studies for membranes with varying IEC values. Recently, our group successfully synthesized a variety of PFSA resins with IEC values ranging from 0.91 to 1.4 mmol g−1, providing an opportunity for us to investigate the effect of factors such as the IEC value, crystallinity and ion-cluster channels, on membrane stability. The proton conductivity and methanol permeability of the membranes are also considered to be crucial parameters which affect fuel cell performance. With these in mind, optimized membranes suitable for fuel cell applications were finally identified.
