Im Jahre 1977 wurde der „Data Encryption Algorithm“ (DEA) vom „National Bureau of Standards“ (NBS, später „National Institute of Standards and Technology“ – NIST) zum amerikanischen Verschlüsselungsstandard für Bundesbehörden erklärt [NBS_77]. 1981 folgte die Verabschiedung der DEA-Spezifikation als ANSI-Standard „DES“ [ANSI_81]. Die Empfehlung des DES als StandardVerschlüsselungsverfahren wurde auf fünf Jahre befristet und 1983, 1988 und 1993 um jeweils weitere fünf Jahre verlängert. Derzeit liegt eine Neufassung des NISTStandards vor [NIST_99], in dem der DES für weitere fünf Jahre übergangsweise zugelassen sein soll, aber die Verwendung von Triple-DES empfohlen wird: eine dreifache Anwendung des DES mit drei verschiedenen Schlüsseln (effektive Schlüssellänge: 168 bit) [NIST_99]. Der DES basiert auf einer von Horst Feistel bei IBM entwickelten Blockchiffre („Lucipher“) mit einer Schlüssellänge von 128 bit. Da die amerikanische „National Security Agency“ (NSA) dafür gesorgt hatte, daß der DES eine Schlüssellänge von lediglich 64 bit besitzt, von denen nur 56 bit relevant sind, und spezielle Substitutionsboxen (den „kryptographischen Kern“ des Verfahrens) erhielt, deren Konstruktionskriterien von der NSA nicht veröffentlicht wurden, war das Verfahren von Beginn an umstritten. Kritiker nahmen an, daß es eine geheime „Trapdoor“ in dem Verfahren gäbe, die der NSA eine OnlineEntschlüsselung auch ohne Kenntnis des Schlüssels erlauben würde. Zwar ließ sich dieser Verdacht nicht erhärten, aber sowohl die Zunahme von Rechenleistung als auch die Parallelisierung von Suchalgorithmen machen heute eine Schlüssellänge von 56 bit zum Sicherheitsrisiko. Zuletzt konnte 1998 mit einer von der „Electronic Frontier Foundation“ (EFF) entwickelten Spezialmaschine mit 1.800 parallel arbeitenden, eigens entwickelten Krypto-Prozessoren ein DES-Schlüssel in einer Rekordzeit von 2,5 Tagen gefunden werden. Um einen Nachfolger für den DES zu finden, kündigte das NIST am 2. Januar 1997 die Suche nach einem „Advanced Encryption Standard“ (AES) an. Ziel dieser Initiative ist, in enger Kooperation mit Forschung und Industrie ein symmetrisches Verschlüsselungsverfahren zu finden, das geeignet ist, bis weit ins 21. Jahrhundert hinein amerikanische Behördendaten wirkungsvoll zu verschlüsseln. Dazu wurde am 12. September 1997 ein offizieller „Call for Algorithm“ ausgeschrieben. An die vorzuschlagenden symmetrischen Verschlüsselungsalgorithmen wurden die folgenden Anforderungen gestellt: nicht-klassifiziert und veröffentlicht, weltweit lizenzfrei verfügbar, effizient implementierbar in Hardund Software, Blockchiffren mit einer Blocklänge von 128 bit sowie Schlüssellängen von 128, 192 und 256 bit unterstützt. Auf der ersten „AES Candidate Conference“ (AES1) veröffentlichte das NIST am 20. August 1998 eine Liste von 15 vorgeschlagenen Algorithmen und forderte die Fachöffentlichkeit zu deren Analyse auf. Die Ergebnisse wurden auf der zweiten „AES Candidate Conference“ (22.-23. März 1999 in Rom, AES2) vorgestellt und unter internationalen Kryptologen diskutiert. Die Kommentierungsphase endete am 15. April 1999. Auf der Basis der eingegangenen Kommentare und Analysen wählte das NIST fünf Kandidaten aus, die es am 9. August 1999 öffentlich bekanntmachte: MARS (IBM) RC6 (RSA Lab.) Rijndael (Daemen, Rijmen) Serpent (Anderson, Biham, Knudsen) Twofish (Schneier, Kelsey, Whiting, Wagner, Hall, Ferguson).

Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

This paper introduces QARMA, a new family of lightweight tweakable block ciphers targeted at applications such as memory encryption, the generation of very short tags for hardware-assisted prevention of software exploitation, and the construction of keyed hash functions. QARMA is inspired by reflection ciphers such as PRINCE, to which it adds a tweaking input, and MANTIS. However, QARMA differs from previous reflector constructions in that it is a three-round Even-Mansour scheme instead of a FX-construction, and its middle permutation is non-involutory and keyed . We introduce and analyse a family of Almost MDS matrices defined over a ring with zero divisors that allows us to encode rotations in its operation while maintaining the minimal latency associated to {0, 1}-matrices. The purpose of all these design choices is to harden the cipher against various classes of attacks. We also describe new S-Box search heuristics aimed at minimising the critical path. QARMA exists in 64- and 128-bit block sizes, where block and tweak size are equal, and keys are twice as long as the blocks. We argue that QARMA provides sufficient security margins within the constraints determined by the mentioned applications, while still achieving best-in-class latency. Implementation results on a state-of-the art manufacturing process are reported. Finally, we propose a technique to extend the length of the tweak by using, for instance, a universal hash function, which can also be used to strengthen the security of QARMA.

The QARMA Block Cipher Family. Almost MDS Matrices Over Rings With Zero Divisors, Nearly Symmetric Even-Mansour Constructions With Non-Involutory Central Rounds, and Search Heuristics for Low-Latency S-Boxes

IoT is becoming more common and popular due to its wide range of applications in various domains. They collect data from the real environment and transfer it over the networks. There are many challenges while deploying IoT in a real-world, varying from tiny sensors to servers. Security is considered as the number one challenge in IoT deployments, as most of the IoT devices are physically accessible in the real world and many of them are limited in resources (such as energy, memory, processing power and even physical space). In this paper, we are focusing on these resource-constrained IoT devices (such as RFID tags, sensors, smart cards, etc.) as securing them in such circumstances is a challenging task. The communication from such devices can be secured by a mean of lightweight cryptography, a lighter version of cryptography. More than fifty lightweight cryptography (plain encryption) algorithms are available in the market with a focus on a specific application(s), and another 57 algorithms have been submitted by the researchers to the NIST competition recently. To provide a holistic view of the area, in this paper, we have compared the existing algorithms in terms of implementation cost, hardware and software performances and attack resistance properties. Also, we have discussed the demand and a direction for new research in the area of lightweight cryptography to optimize balance amongst cost, performance and security.

Lightweight Cryptography Algorithms for Resource-Constrained IoT Devices: A Review, Comparison and Research Opportunities

Authenticated encryption satisfies the basic need for authenticity and confidentiality in our information infrastructure. In this paper, we provide the specification of Ascon-128 and Ascon-128a. Both authenticated encryption algorithms provide efficient authenticated encryption on resource-constrained devices and on high-end CPUs. Furthermore, they have been selected as the “primary choice” for lightweight authenticated encryption in the final portfolio of the CAESAR competition. In addition, we specify the hash function Ascon-Hash, and the extendable output function Ascon-Xof. Moreover, we complement the specification by providing a detailed overview of existing cryptanalysis and implementation results.

Ascon v1.2: Lightweight Authenticated Encryption and Hashing

Run-time attacks against programs written in memory-unsafe programming languages (e.g., C and C++) remain a prominent threat against computer systems. The prevalence of techniques like return-oriented programming (ROP) in attacking real-world systems has prompted major processor manufacturers to design hardware-based countermeasures against specific classes of run-time attacks. An example is the recently added support for pointer authentication (PA) in the ARMv8-A processor architecture, commonly used in devices like smartphones. PA is a low-cost technique to authenticate pointers so as to resist memory vulnerabilities. It has been shown to enable practical protection against memory vulnerabilities that corrupt return addresses or function pointers. However, so far, PA has received very little attention as a general purpose protection mechanism to harden software against various classes of memory attacks. In this paper, we use PA to build novel defenses against various classes of run-time attacks, including the first PA-based mechanism for data pointer integrity. We present PARTS, an instrumentation framework that integrates our PA-based defenses into the LLVM compiler and the GNU/Linux operating system and show, via systematic evaluation, that PARTS provides better protection than current solutions at a reasonable performance overhead

PAC it up: Towards Pointer Integrity using ARM Pointer Authentication

At CRYPTO 2019, Gohr first introduces the deep learning based cryptanalysis on round-reduced SPECK. Using a deep residual network, Gohr trains several neural network based distinguishers on 8-round SPECK-32/64. The analysis follows an ‘all-in-one’ differential cryptanalysis approach, which considers all the output differences effect under the same input difference. Usually, the all-in-one differential cryptanalysis is more effective compared to the one using only one single differential trail. However, when the cipher is non-Markov or its block size is large, it is usually very hard to fully compute. Inspired by Gohr's work, we try to simulate the all-in-one differentials for non-Markov ciphers through machine learning. Our idea here is to reduce a distinguishing problem to a classification problem, so that it can be efficiently managed by machine learning. As a proof of concept, we show several distinguishers for four high profile ciphers, each of which works with trivial complexity. In particular, we show differential distinguishers for 8-round Gimli-Hash, Gimli-Cipher and Gimli-Permutation; 3-round Ascon-Permutation; 10-round Knot-256 permutation and 12-round Knot-512 permutation; and 4-round Chaskey-Permutation. Finally, we explore more on choosing an efficient machine learning model and observe that only a three layer neural network can be used. Our analysis shows the attacker is able to reduce the complexity of finding distinguishers by using machine learning techniques.

Machine Learning Assisted Differential Distinguishers For Lightweight Ciphers

In this paper, we propose a key-recovery attack on Trivium reduced to 855 rounds. As the output is a complex Boolean polynomial over secret key and IV bits and it is hard to find the solution of the secret keys, we propose a novel nullification technique of the Boolean polynomial to reduce the output Boolean polynomial of 855-round Trivium. Then we determine the degree upper bound of the reduced nonlinear boolean polynomial and detect the right keys. These techniques can be applicable to most stream ciphers based on nonlinear feedback shift registers (NFSR). Our attack on 855-round Trivium costs time complexity \(2^{77}\). As far as we know, this is the best key-recovery attack on round-reduced Trivium. To verify our attack, we also give some experimental data on 721-round reduced Trivium.

A Key-Recovery Attack on 855-round Trivium

The conditional cube attack on round-reduced Keccak keyed modes was proposed by Huang et al. at EUROCRYPT 2017. In their attack, a conditional cube variable was introduced, whose diffusion was significantly reduced by certain key bit conditions. The attack requires a set of cube variables which are not multiplied in the first round while the conditional cube variable is not multiplied with other cube variables (called ordinary cube variables) in the first two rounds. This has an impact on the degree of the output of Keccak and hence gives a distinguisher. Later, the MILP method was applied to find ordinary cube variables. However, for some Keccak based versions with few degrees of freedom, one could not find enough ordinary cube variables, which weakens or even invalidates the conditional cube attack.In this paper, a new conditional cube attack on Keccak is proposed. We remove the limitation that no cube variables multiply with each other in the first round. As a result, some quadratic terms may appear in the first round. We make use of some new bit conditions to prevent the quadratic terms from multiplying with other cube variables in the second round, so that there will be no cubic terms in the first two rounds. Furthermore, we introduce the kernel quadratic term and construct a 6-2-2 pattern to reduce the diffusion of quadratic terms significantly, where the Θ operation even in the second round becomes an identity transformation (CP-kernel property) for the kernel quadratic term. Previous conditional cube attacks on Keccak only explored the CP-kernel property of Θ operation in the first round. Therefore, more degrees of freedom are available for ordinary cube variables and fewer bit conditions are used to remove the cubic terms in the second round, which plays a key role in the conditional cube attack on versions with very few degrees of freedom. We also use the MILP method in the search of cube variables and give key-recovery attacks on round-reduced Keccak keyed modes.As a result, we reduce the time complexity of key-recovery attacks on 7-round Keccak-MAC-512 and 7-round Ketje Sr v2 from 2111, 299 to 272, 277, respectively. Additionally, we have reduced the time complexity of attacks on 9-round KMAC256 and 7-round Ketje Sr v1. Besides, practical attacks on 6-round Ketje Sr v1 and v2 are also given in this paper for the first time.

Quantum Attacks Against Type-1 Generalized Feistel Ciphers and Applications to CAST-256

At Asiacrypt 2014, Sun et al. proposed a MILP model [20] to search for differential characteristics of bit-oriented block ciphers. In this paper, we improve this model to search for differential characteristics of GIFT [2], a new lightweight block cipher proposed at CHES 2017. GIFT has two versions, namely GIFT-64 and GIFT-128. For GIFT-64, we find the best 12-round differential characteristic and a number of iterative 4-round differential characteristics with our MILP-based model. We give a key-recovery attack on 19-round GIFT-64. For GIFT-128, we find a 18-round differential characteristic and give the first attack on 23-round GIFT-128.
