Journal ArticleDOI

Observed surface warming induced by urbanization in east China

TL;DR: Wang et al. as discussed by the authors used satellite-measured nighttime light imagery and population census data to detect surface air temperature change induced by urbanization, and determined the trends of urban heat island (UHI) effects, determined using OMR and UMR approaches, indicate that rapid urbanization has a significant influence on surface warming over east China.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analyses of the spring dust storm frequency of northern China in relation to antecedent and concurrent wind, precipitation, vegetation, and soil moisture conditions

TL;DR: In this article, the relationship between the spring (March-May) dust storm frequency (DSF) of northern China, gridded precipitation based on gauge observations, wind velocity at different geopotential heights, satellite-measured land vegetation index, and grid box soil moisture data during 1982-2001 are examined using correlation analysis and singular value decomposition methods.
Journal ArticleDOI

WRF simulations of urban heat island under hot-weather synoptic conditions: The case study of Hangzhou City, China

TL;DR: In this article, the urban heat island (UHI) effect over Hangzhou, east China during a long-lasting heat wave was simulated by a weather research and forecasting (WRF) model coupled with an urban canopy model at a horizontal resolution of 1.km.
Journal ArticleDOI

NDVI-based vegetation changes and their responses to climate change from 1982 to 2011: A case study in the Koshi River Basin in the middle Himalayas

TL;DR: In this article, the authors combined datasets of the satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and climatic factors to analyze spatio-temporal patterns of vegetation growth in 1982-2006 in the Koshi River Basin (KRB) in the middle Himalayas.
Journal ArticleDOI

Contribution of urbanization to the increase of extreme heat events in an urban agglomeration in east China

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the contributions of urbanization to trends of summer extreme temperature indices (ETIs) in YRD and quantified the amplification of the positive trends in ETIs by the urban heat island effect.
