Review of discrete particle modeling of fluidized beds

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is the prodromal stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Identifying MCI subjects who are at high risk of converting to AD is crucial for effective treatments. In this study, a deep learning approach based on convolutional neural networks (CNN), is designed to accurately predict MCI-to-AD conversion with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data. First, MRI images are prepared with age-correction and other processing. Second, local patches, which are assembled into 2.5 dimensions, are extracted from these images. Then, the patches from AD and normal controls (NC) are used to train a CNN to identify deep learning features of MCI subjects. After that, structural brain image features are mined with FreeSurfer to assist CNN. Finally, both types of features are fed into an extreme learning machine classifier to predict the AD conversion. The proposed approach is validated on the standardized MRI datasets from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) project. This approach achieves an accuracy of 79.9% and an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 86.1% in leave-one-out cross validations. Compared with other state-of-the-art methods, the proposed one outperforms others with higher accuracy and AUC, while keeping a good balance between the sensitivity and specificity. Results demonstrate great potentials of the proposed CNN-based approach for the prediction of MCI-to-AD conversion with solely MRI data. Age correction and assisted structural brain image features can boost the prediction performance of CNN.

Convolutional Neural Networks-Based MRI Image Analysis for the Alzheimer’s Disease Prediction From Mild Cognitive Impairment

Theminimum-degree greedy algorithm, or Greedy for short, is a simple and well-studied method for finding independent sets in graphs. We show that it achieves a performance ratio of (Δ+2)/3 for approximating independent sets in graphs with degree bounded by Δ. The analysis yields a precise characterization of the size of the independent sets found by the algorithm as a function of the independence number, as well as a generalization of Turan's bound. We also analyze the algorithm when run in combination with a known preprocessing technique, and obtain an improved $$(2\bar d + 3)/5$$ performance ratio on graphs with average degree $$\bar d$$ , improving on the previous best $$(\bar d + 1)/2$$ of Hochbaum. Finally, we present an efficient parallel and distributed algorithm attaining the performance guarantees of Greedy.

Greed is good : approximating independent sets in sparse and bounded-degree graphs

We use machine learning to perform super-resolution analysis of grossly under-resolved turbulent flow field data to reconstruct the high-resolution flow field. Two machine learning models are developed, namely, the convolutional neural network (CNN) and the hybrid downsampled skip-connection/multi-scale (DSC/MS) models. These machine learning models are applied to a two-dimensional cylinder wake as a preliminary test and show remarkable ability to reconstruct laminar flow from low-resolution flow field data. We further assess the performance of these models for two-dimensional homogeneous turbulence. The CNN and DSC/MS models are found to reconstruct turbulent flows from extremely coarse flow field images with remarkable accuracy. For the turbulent flow problem, the machine-leaning-based super-resolution analysis can greatly enhance the spatial resolution with as little as 50 training snapshot data, holding great potential to reveal subgrid-scale physics of complex turbulent flows. With the growing availability of flow field data from high-fidelity simulations and experiments, the present approach motivates the development of effective super-resolution models for a variety of fluid flows.

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are successful in single-image super-resolution. Traditional CNNs are limited to exploit multi-scale contextual information for image reconstruction due to the fixed convolutional kernel in their building modules. To restore various scales of image details, we enhance the multi-scale inference capability of CNNs by introducing competition among multi-scale convolutional filters, and build up a shallow network under limited computational resources. The proposed network has the following two advantages: (1) the multi-scale convolutional kernel provides the multi-context for image super-resolution, and (2) the maximum competitive strategy adaptively chooses the optimal scale of information for image reconstruction. Our experimental results on image super-resolution show that the performance of the proposed network outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Single Image Super-Resolution Based on Multi-Scale Competitive Convolutional Neural Network.

Transport Triggered Architectures (TTAs) possess many advantageous, such as modularity, flexibility, and scalability. As an exposed datapath architecture, TTAs can effectively reduce the register file (RF) pressure in both number of accesses and number of RF ports. However, the conventional TTAs also have some evident disadvantages, such as relative low code density, dynamic-power wasting due to separate scheduling of source operands, and inefficient support for variant immediate values. In order to preserve the merit of conventional TTAs, while solving these aforementioned issues, we propose, MOVE-Pro, a novel low power and high code density TTA architecture. With optimizations at instruction set architecture (ISA), architecture, circuit, and compiler levels, the low-power potential of TTAs is fully exploited. Moreover, with a much denser code size, TTAs performance is also improved accordingly. In a head-to-head comparison between a two-issue MOVE-Pro processor and its RISC counterpart, we shown that up to 80% of RF accesses can be reduced, and the reduction in RF power is successfully transferred to the total core power saving. Up to 11% reduction of the total core power is achieved by our MOVE-Pro processor, while the code density is almost the same as its RISC counterpart.

MOVE-Pro: A low power and high code density TTA architecture

Numerical simulations were performed of a turbulent gas-particle multiphase flow in a circulating fluidized bed riser using a hard-sphere discrete particle model (DPM) for the particle phase and the Navier−Stokes equations for the gas phase, where the subgrid scale stresses (SGS) were modeled with the SGS model proposed by Vreman.(1) The model enables the simulation of systems with an arbitrary particle size distribution. In this work, binary mixtures of particles with different diameters were studied. From the numerical results it is found that the particles display size distribution in both horizontal and vertical directions. Small particles have a higher vertical particle velocity than the large particles. With increasing superficial gas velocity, the vertical particle velocity is increased. The average particle velocity and concentration vary both in the horizontal and vertical directions. Finally, the numerical results are compared with the experimental and numerical results of Mathiesen et al.(2). It is found that the simulation results with Vreman’s SGS model agree better with the literature data than those obtained with a classical Smagorinsky(3) model, especially in the zone close to the wall.

This paper presents Xetal-Pro SIMD processor, which is based on Xetal-II, one of the most computational-efficient (in terms of GOPS/Watt) processors available today. Xetal-Pro supports ultra wide V DD scaling from nominal supply to the sub-threshold region. Although aggressive V DD scaling causes severe throughput degradation, this can be compensated by the nature of massive parallelism in the Xetal family. The predecessor of Xetal-Pro, Xetal-II, includes a large on-chip frame memory (FM), which cannot operate reliably at ultra low voltage. Therefore we investigate both different FM realizations and memory organization alternatives. We propose a hybrid memory architecture which reduces the non-local memory traffic and enables further V DD scaling. Compared to Xetal-II operating at nominal voltage, we could gain more than 10× energy reduction while still delivering a sufficiently high throughput of 0.69 GOPS (counting multiply and add operations only). This work gives a new insight to the design of ultra-low energy SIMD processors, which are suitable for portable streaming applications.
