Two case studies are presented to demonstrate that children who experience trauma-related nightmares may benefit from cognitive-behavioral therapy for this sleep problem. The treatment was adapted from the empirically supported adult treatment for chronic trauma-related night- mares: exposure, relaxation, and rescripting therapy (ERRT). Pretreatment and posttreatment nightmare frequency and severity were measured in addition to subjective nightmare-related distress, behavioral problems, sleep quality and quantity, and symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Improvement in nightmare and sleep disturbance fre- quencies were found as well as reductions in parents' reports of child behavior problems. This study provides preliminary support for the use of ERRT with children. read more read less

Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse are commonly co-occuring conditions, it is generally recommended that an individual must first receive successful substance abuse treatment before posttraumatic symptoms can be addressed. Given the high comorbidity of these conditions, however, it would be helpful if more broadly focused therapies were available that simultaneously targeted common functional processes underlying the multiple problems of the dually diagnosed. Both PTSD and substance abuse can be conceptualized as disorders with significant experiential avoidance components. One treatment that has been specifically developed for the treatment of experiential avoidance is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). In this case study, application of ACT for an individual with comorbid PTSD and substance abuse is described, and its effects are examined. read more read less

Individuals with autism and limited speech are candidates for speech-generating devices (SGDs), but some individuals might experience difficulty in operating these devices We describe the case of Steven, a 17-year-old adolescent with autism who used an iPod-based SGD, but had difficulty activating the speech output feature of this device His difficulties were initially interpreted as motor control problems, suggesting the need to abandon this technology, prescribe a different SGD, or adapt his existing device An alternative conceptualization was that the existing intervention procedures had failed to shape more effective response topographies Along these lines, a behavioral intervention, involving differential reinforcement and delayed prompting, proved effective in shaping response topographies that enabled Steven to be more successful in activating the speech output function of his iPod-based SGD The results suggest that behavioral intervention may provide an alternative to the more costly and invo read more read less

Behavioral Activation as an Intervention for Coexistent Depressive and Anxiety Symptoms

Extension of these strategies toward individuals presenting with coexistent depressive and anxiety symptoms may represent a parsimonious, practical, and time-and cost-effective treatment method. The present study outlines a case in which coexistent anxiety and depressive symptoms predominate, a clinical presentation made somewhat more complex given an Axis III diagnosis of colitis. A brief behavioral activation treatment for depression (BATD) is used to simultaneously incorporate activation and exposure strategies to ameliorate affective symptoms. Following a 10-session treatment protocol, the patient demonstrated notable decreases in self-reported anxiety and depressive symptoms and increased quality of life. Although these data are preliminary, they suggest some efficacy for BATD as a viable treatment alternative for individuals with a mixed anxiety-depressive disorder presentation. read more read less
