Abstract: Experimental features of a transgenic mouse mutation assay based on a lacI target transgene from Escherichia coli are considered in detail. Sources of variability in the experimental protocol that can affect the statistical nature of the observations are examined with the goal of identifying sources of excess variation in the observed mutant fractions. The sources include plate-to-plate (within packages), package-to-package (within animals), and animal-to-animal (within study) variability. Data from two laboratories are evaluated, using various statistical methods to identify excess variability. Results suggest only scattered patterns of excess variability, except possibly in those cases where genomic DNA from test animals is stored for extended periods (e.g., > 90 days) after isolation from tissues. Further study is encouraged to examine the validity and implications of this time/storage-related effect.

Abstract: Experimental evidence indicates that a small fraction (5% or less) of measurable butyltin species are associated with the particulate fraction separated from whole seawater by filtration. Adsorption experiments have shown that 17% or less of carbon-14 labelled tributyltin added to unfiltered seawater was taken up by suspended particles in a 10-hour period. Butyltin appears to be associated principally with the dissolved fraction of whole seawater, although some particulate associated butyltin is present which permits butyltin transport to marine sediments via particulate settling. Environmental sediment tributyltin concentrations are approximately three orders of magnitude greater than the associated water column levels. Suspended sediment/water partition coefficients (Kp) calculated from recent environmental data are near those previously reported (3000), and are greater than sediment/water partition coefficients in some areas of San DiegoBay.

Abstract: Analyses of data from Voyager 2 experiments provide evidence for, and characteristics of, a Jovian magnetotail extending at least to 9,000 Jovian radii from the planet. During approximately (25 day) periodic sightings of the tail, the magnetic field tended to point radially towards or away from Jupiter, indicating preservation to large distances of the bipolar, lobe like structure observed near the planet. This periodicity, along with various properties of the solar wind at this time, indicates that the tail is apparently influenced by recurrent solar wind features. Anomalous magnetic fields, not aligned with the nominal tail axis, also exist within the tail, especially in the low density, central (core) region, indicating some complexity of internal structure.
