TL;DR: The objective of this study was to investigate the use of Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), a 3-D graphics language suitable for stand-alone or browser-based interactive viewing, to create3-D soil landscape models at different scales.
Abstract: Most state-of-the-art manipulations and visualizations of soil data use geographic information systems to portray soil landscapes in two dimensions (2-D). Nevertheless, soil attributes are distributed continuously in three dimensions (3-D) across landscapes. The objective of this study was to investigate the use of Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), a 3-D graphics language suitable for stand-alone or browser-based interactive viewing, to create 3-D soil landscape models at different scales. Four different locations in southern Wisconsin were selected to represent pedon, catena, catchment, and soil region scales. Soil data, including texture, cone index, and depth of soil layers, were used in conjunction with topographic attributes to create 3-D soil landscape models. Spatial modeling techniques comprised 2-D and 3-D ordinary kriging. We used Environmental Visualization Software (EVS) to export the geometry of 3-D objects, which were enhanced to include: (i) viewpoints, (ii) Munsell colors, (iii) texture maps, (iv) 3-D cross-section animation, (v) animations such as zooming and rotation, and (vi) primitive shapes to highlight areas of interest. Virtual reality modeling language is capable of describing and visualizing extremely complex shapes, such as complex soil layers or terrain. Visualization of Munsell soil colors was difficult to implement because there is no hardware or software independent color-management system available in VRML. Animation techniques were valuable to high-light specific characteristics of each model. The accessibility of interactive VRML models via the World Wide Web and the portability of these models across platforms facilitate the entry of soil science into the virtual world of cyberspace.

TL;DR: An optimization tool, which combines multi-objective optimization algorithms, SWAT, and a computational efficient framework, was created to optimally identify agricultural BMPs at watershed scales and can help stakeholders identify optimal types, quantities, and spatial locations that can maximize reductions in pollutant loadings with the lowest BMP costs.

TL;DR: In this article, two groups of college students, 20 with fewer than two years of musical training and 20 with extensive musical backgrounds, rated their preferences for piano recordings of J. S. Bach's "Prelude and Fugue in C Major", Claude Debussy's "The Maid With the Flaxen Hair", Edvard Grieg's "Wedding Day at Troldhaugen, and Pierre Boulez's “Piano Sonata No. 1, 2nd Movement.
Abstract: Two groups of college students, 20 with fewer than two years of musical training and 20 with extensive musical backgrounds, rated their preferences for piano recordings of J. S. Bach's “Prelude and Fugue in C Major,” Claude Debussy's “The Maid With the Flaxen Hair,” Edvard Grieg's “Wedding Day at Troldhaugen,” and Pierre Boulez's “Piano Sonata No. 1, 2nd Movement.” Each piece had been ranked according to perceived complexity by seven music professors. When personal preference was plotted against complexity, an inverted-U curve was obtained. These data corroborate the 1874 position of Wilhelm Wundt and others. Average liking was significantly higher among musically sophisticated subjects, due primarily to differences between their ratings and those of the nonsophisticated subjects for the pieces by Debussy and Boulez. This suggests that musical sophistication might increase preference, particularly for modern pieces in which complexity is greatest.

TL;DR: It is forecast that the mayfly population in western Lake Erie would achieve full recovery between years 1998 and 2000, depending on the carrying capacity of the western basin, and this was the first evidence that mayfly populations are capable of recolonizing large aquatic ecosystems at rates comparable with those observed in much smaller lentic ecosystems.
Abstract: Burrowing mayflies, Hexagenia spp. (H. limbata and H. rigida), began recolonizing western Lake Erie during the 1990s. Survey data for mayfly nymph densities indicated that the population experienced exponential growth between 1991 and 1997. To predict the time to full recovery of the mayfly population, we fitted logistic models, ranging in carrying capacity from 600 to 2000 nymphs/m2, to these survey data. Based on the fitted logistic curves, we forecast that the mayfly population in western Lake Erie would achieve full recovery between years 1998 and 2000, depending on the carrying capacity of the western basin. Additionally, we estimated the mortality rate of nymphs in western Lake Erie during 1994 and then applied an age-based matrix model to the mayfly population. The results of the matrix population modeling corroborated the exponential growth model application in that both methods yielded an estimate of the population growth rate, r, in excess of 0.8 yr−1. This was the first evidence that mayfly populations are capable of recolonizing large aquatic ecosystems at rates comparable with those observed in much smaller lentic ecosystems. Our model predictions should prove valuable to managers of power plant facilities along the western basin in planning for mayfly emergences and to managers of the yellow perch (Perca flavescens) fishery in western Lake Erie.

TL;DR: In this paper, Lagrangian analyses are used to evaluate the processing of nutrients and sediments during storm runoff events as water moved from the Maumee River loading station at Waterville, OH through the lower river, maumee bay and into Lake Erie's western basin.
