TL;DR: A quantitative analysis of the relationship between a 'local importance value' index for each malaria remedy (IVmal) and inhibition of cultured Plasmodium falciparum by ethanolic extracts supports the hypothesis that the degree of local consensus about a given remedy is a good indicator of its potential biological efficacy.

TL;DR: In this article, the essential oil from clove Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against a collection of 25 different genera of test bacteria and 20 different isolates of Listeria monocytogenes.
Abstract: The essential oil from clove Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & Perry exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against a collection of 25 different genera of test bacteria and 20 different isolates of Listeria monocytogenes. The oil was also tested against three fungal strains: a plant pathogen, a spoilage type and a mycotoxigenic strain. This resulted in high levels of growth inhibition at both concentrations of 1 and 10 μl ml−1 growth medium. The essential oil was fed to mice in order to assess the antioxidant capacity, with particular reference to the protection of polyunsaturated fatty acids, in the liver and retina during ageing.

TL;DR: In this paper, bathymetry and gravity data collected during a detailed land and marine geo-physical survey as well as literature data are compiled and analyzed. And they show that the caldera is characterized by a flat seabottom at 240 m below sea level and by steep linear walls suggesting that the collapse has been controlled by preexisting features.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the global variations of sea level over the coming thousands of years and found that during the alternate glacial and interglacial periods, ice-cap melting and ice accumulation in the high latitudes change the ocean water volume, which causes the sea level oscillations.

TL;DR: Suspensions of mixed rumen protozoa were added to incubations of the anaerobic fungus Neocallimastix patriciarum with rice straw cell walls and it was suggested that the presence of protozooa reduced the fungal carboxymethylcellulase activity to around half of that found in pure cultures of the fungus.
Abstract: Suspensions of mixed rumen protozoa were added to incubations of the anaerobic fungus Neocallimastix patriciarum with rice straw cell walls. The protozoa did not influence the dry matter lost from the straw, or the solubilization of monosaccharides, but they had a marked effect on the fermentation products formed. Studies with 14C-labelled protozoa suggested that the presence of protozoa reduced the fungal carboxymethylcellulase activity to around half of that found in pure cultures of the fungus.

TL;DR: The varied estimates of the population suggest that a ground survey of orangutans in different habitats and categories of forest is of the utmost importance.
Abstract: The estimated number of orangutans in the wild has been changing along with the development of methods used in censusing the species. The most appropriate method for estimating the population of orangutans in the wild is through a long-term study. Previous authors have provided several different estimates which range from 4,000 to as high as 145,000 individuals. Recent data, however, suggest that the number of orangutans in the wild is no more than 30,000 individuals. The varied estimates of the population suggest that a ground survey of orangutans in different habitats and categories of forest is of the utmost importance.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of deaeration on gold recovery in thiourea leach solutions of Cimanggu-type ore using lead cementation and carbon adsorption was investigated.
Abstract: The recoveries of gold from thiourea leach solutions of Cimanggu-type ore using lead cementation and carbon adsorption were found to be around 50%. A series of lead cementation and carbon adsorption experiments of laboratory scale was set up to improve the gold recovery. The effect of deaeration on gold recoveries in thiourea system was investigated. The study revealed that the reversed effect of dissolved oxygen on gold recovery in thiourea system is observed, as compared with the cyanide system. While recovery of gold from aurocyanide complex solution by cementation is improved under deaerated condition, gold recovery is decreased when deaeration is applied to the thiourea system. Meanwhile, recovery of gold from thiourea complex solution is increased as deaeration is performed during carbon adsorption, which is practised under atmospheric pressure in cyanide system. Under deaerated condition, gold recoveries of 73% and 29% are achieved using carbon adsorption and lead cementation, respectively. A gold recovery of 81% is obtained when a longer retention time (= 4 hours) is applied to the carbon adsorption process. The proposed mechanisms for both processes are described.
