TL;DR: The efficacy of modern drugs in the treatment of tuberculosis of the spine has been evaluated by a personal follow-up for three to ten years and it is suggested that treatment should in the first place be by modern antitubercular drugs.
Abstract: The efficacy of modern drugs in the treatment of tuberculosis of the spine has been evaluated by a personal follow-up for three to ten years. Operation on the vertebral lesion was done only for those patients with or without neural complications who failed to respond favourably to drug therapy and rest. Thus absolute indications for operation were present in only 6 per cent of cases without neural involvement and in 60 per cent of patients with neural deficit. Of the patients who responded to drug therapy alone, only 19 per cent revealed increase of kyphosis by more than 10 degrees. The diseased area showed radiological evidence of osseous replacement in 29.6 per cent of cases, of fibro-osseous union in 50 per cent and of fibrous replacement in 202 per cent. The overall results of this regime compare favourably with those of radical operation. It is suggested that freatment should in the first place be by modern antitubercular drugs.

Abstract: TRACTION ALOPECIA IN SIKH BOYS SIR, Traction alopecia due to slow continuous traction is well-known in girls with pony-taii hairstyles, in those who use rollers to curl their hair, and in negroes who plait their kinky hair to straighten it. A similar traction alopecia is seen in Sikh boys. In the Sikh religion males do not cut their hair. To keep their long hair well groomed and kempt, the hair is made into a plait, twisted and put up on top of

TL;DR: This is the first time that pentaoxygenated xanthones have been found in a member of the genus Swertia, and 1-Hydroxy-3,4,7,8-tetramethoxyxanthone was previously known only as a synthetic compound.

TL;DR: Coagulation studies showed statistically significant prolongation of thrombin time, elevation of serum fibrinogen degradation products (FDP) and hypofibrino‐ genaemia in patients with pre‐eclampsia as well as eClampsia, and the laboratory findings suggest the occurrence of intravascular coagulation.

TL;DR: Prostaglandin E1 (0·4 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly potentiated the antinociceptive action of morphine in albino rats.
Abstract: SUMMARY 1. Prostaglandin E1 (0·4 mg/kg, i.p.) significantly potentiated the antinociceptive action of morphine in albino rats. 2. This potentiation was significantly inhibited by pretreatment with reserpine, p-chlorophenylalanine or methysergide but not by α-methyl-p-yrosine, phentolamine or propranolol. 3. The results suggest that the potentiation of morphine by prostaglandin E1 is mediated by serotonin, since it is inhibited by pharmacological agents known to reduce central turnover of serotonin receptors.

TL;DR: It appears that the intercalation leads to the ‘loosening’ of the structure of the ribosome which is also reflected in the decreased inhibitory capacity of the treated ribosomes towards RNase I.

TL;DR: Mutation of the gene m3 of phage P22 causes permanent depression of macromolecular synthesis in the infected host and thus inhibits phage development as indicated by burst size and lysozyme production.
Abstract: Mutation of the gene m3 of phage P22 causes permanent depression of macromolecular synthesis in the infected host and thus inhibits phage development as indicated by burst size and lysozyme production. The permanent depression of macromolecular synthesis is most probably due to blockage of the transport process. The m3 allele is dominant over m+. m3 allows some transcription of phage genes (however, the difference between early and late function is not clear). The inhibitory effect of m3 on DNA synthesis may be indirect.

TL;DR: Nevus lipomatosus cutaneus superficialis (Hoffman‐Zurhelle) is a distinct clinical entity in which the lesions were large, appeared early in childhood and were linear in distribution along the natal cleft.
Abstract: Nevus lipomatosus cutaneus superficialis (Hoffman-Zurhelle) is a distinct clinical entity. A case is reported in which the lesions were large, appeared early in childhood and were linear in distribution along the natal cleft.

TL;DR: Not only the typical teleostean type of hypothalamo-hypophysial vascularization is present, but also an incipient tetrapodal pattern is evident.
Abstract: In Rita rita the internal carotid artery gives rise to hypothalamic and hypophysial arteries. The hypophysial artery directly enters the pituitary and largely contributes to the interface vasculature lying in between the neurohypophysis and the pars distalis which can be considered as an equivalent of the median eminence. Blood vessels from the interface vasculature enter the pars distalis. The hypothalamic artery gives rise to the primary capillary plexus in the infundibular floor and the portal vessels formed by it irrigate the glandular pituitary. Both, at the level of the hypothalamus and at the interface, neurosecretory material might get access to blood vessels. Thus, in Rita rita, not only the typical teleostean type of hypothalamo-hypophysial vascularization is present, but also an incipient tetrapodal pattern is evident.

TL;DR: The skin surface was separated from growing S. aureus by a filter and pustules were produced through the filter, characterized by necrobiosis, spongiosis followed by perivascular infiltration, exocytosis and intraepidermal vesicle formation.
Abstract: Staphylococcus aureus does not grow readily on normal skin, where an important factor inhibiting its growth is the resident flora. Hydration of the stratum corneum favors the growth of S. aureus. Before lesions of staphyloderma are produced, organisms multiply on the surface. Substances produced as the result of multiplication enter the skin and produce an irritant reaction characterized by necrobiosis, spongiosis followed by perivascular infiltration, exocytosis and intraepidermal vesicle formation. A technique was used whereby the skin surface was separated from growing S. aureus by a filter. Pustules were produced through the filter.

TL;DR: The radiological features of the left lobe of the liver involved by amebic abscess, hydatid cyst and malignancy, as shown on barium examination of the stomach, are described.
Abstract: SUMMARY The radiological features of the left lobe of the liver involved by amebic abscess, hydatid cyst and malignancy, as shown on barium examination of the stomach, are described. The commonest radiological finding is anterior gastric indentation with or without posterior displacement of the stomach. Other features of left lobe enlargement are downward displacement of the gastric fundus, a scooped-out appearance of the lesser curve of the stomach and, rarely, posterior indentation. The importance of barium meal examination of the stomach in localising the lesion to the left lobe is emphasised. A rare case of gastro-pericardial fistula complicating amebic liver abscess is described.

TL;DR: Under the EM, the ependyma of rats in proestrous were seen to contain a few dense bodies, mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum and during the estrous, there was increase in the number of vesicles and mito-chondria and the cytoplasm became finely granular.
Abstract: Light microscopy observations during the proestrous show the basal granulosa to be regularly arranged with a clear demarcation line between it and the underlying theca interna. Further, it was noticed that the granulosa has a smooth contour towards the antrum. On the other hand during the estrous period the demarcation line becomes strikingly irregular and the inner contour becomes wavy, striking a close resemblance to the intestinal ‘villi’.
