TL;DR: The data suggest that the rich morphology of Hebrew gives Hebrew-speaking specifically language-impaired children an advantage over their English-speaking counterparts, however, even within Hebrew, specifically Language Impaired children may have special difficulty with grammatical morphemes of low perceptual salience.
Abstract: Preliminary data from seven Hebrew-speaking specifically language-impaired children (aged 4;4 to 5;3) were examined to evaluate alternative explanations of cross-linguistic differences among children with specific language impairment. The Hebrew-speaking specifically language-impaired children were found to make considerably greater use of grammatical morphemes than seven English-speaking specifically language-impaired children (aged 3;6 to 6;9) showing comparable mean utterance length measured in words. However, the Hebrew-speaking children with specific language impairment were not without limitations in morphology; relative to seven younger, normally developing Hebrew-speaking children (aged 2;4 to 3;3) matched for mean utterance length measured in morphemes, these children exhibited deficiencies with certain grammatical morphemes. The data suggest that the rich morphology of Hebrew gives Hebrew-speaking specifically language-impaired children an advantage over their English-speaking counterparts. Howe...

TL;DR: Various polymeric gel and ointment bases containing 1% piroxicam were prepared to study the in-vitro release of the drug and additives had little or no effect in enhancing the drug release from these bases.
Abstract: Piroxicam is one of the most potent non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory agents which also exhibits antipyretic activity. Piroxicam is well absorbed following the oral administration, however, its use has been associated with a number of gastro-intestinal disorders including bleeding and ulceration. To overcome these side effects, this study was undertaken to develop diadermatic dosage form using various polymeric gel and ointment bases containing 1% piroxicam were prepared to study the in-vitro release of the drug. Also, a series of additive ingredients, such as, alcohol USP, polyethylene glycol-400 and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) were incorporated in these formulations at various concentration levels to evaluate their effects on drug release. The general rank order for the in-vitro drug release from all the bases evaluated was: gel base > hydrophillic base > emulsion base. In general, additives had little or no effect in enhancing the drug release from these bases. The in-vitro release data were treat...

TL;DR: In this article, the use of cross-polarization (CP) and single-pulse magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) as well as normal and surfaceenhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), in concert, for characterizing highly crystalline polymorphic silicon carbide ceramics was explored.
Abstract: The present report explores the use of cross-polarization (CP) and single-pulse magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS-NMR) as well as normal and surfaceenhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), in concert, for characterizing highly crystalline polymorphic silicon carbide ceramics. The combined use of these techniques provides a wealth of information regarding bulk, near-surface, and surface speciation. Both Raman and SERS are promising techniques for fracture surface characterization of these systems. The application of CPMAS-NMR and SERS to the study of ceramics is reported for the first time in this investigation.

TL;DR: Assessment of preschool children with physical congenital anomalies and the adaptational responses of their caretakers found children with anomalies were more socially reticent and compliant than peers and their mothers were more controlling and nonverbally active during a teaching task.
Abstract: To address a gap regarding the development of preschool children with physical congenital anomalies and the adaptational responses of their caretakers, 37 children with anomalies and 44 control children were assessed. Children were administered the Stanford-Binet and the Preschool Language Scale, and the children and their mothers were observed in a series of semi-structured situations. Performance on linguistic and intellectual tests was related to socioeconomic status, not to medical risk. Children with anomalies were more socially reticent and compliant than peers, and their mothers were more controlling and nonverbally active during a teaching task. Results are discussed in terms of Bell's lower-limit adaptational pattern.

TL;DR: A procedure that has been modified from broth cultures to petri dish cultures and the time required has been shortened to less.
Abstract: Gardnerella vaginalis, a pleomorphic Gram variable bacteria (1), with a Gram positive cell wall (2). that stains predominantly as Gram negative is associated in bacterial vaginosis (1). We have described a lysozyme-SDS-proteinase K method for the isolation of DNA from 250 ml Casman broth cultures requiring about 60 to 72 hours (3). However, this was not convenient for comparative restriction endonuclease analysis (REA) studies involving a large number of clinical isolates. Here, we describe a procedure that has been modified from broth cultures to petri dish cultures and the time required has been shortened to less

TL;DR: The data show that both norpyridostigmine and norneostIGmine cross the blood-brain barrier and that they are effective inhibitors of mouse brain AChE activity.
Abstract: We have synthesized the tertiary amines of pyridostigmine and neostigmine, 3-pyridinol dimethylcarbamate (norpyridostigmine) and 3-dimethylaminophenol dimethylcarbamate (norneostigmine) respectively, and we have tested their abilities to cross the blood-brain barrier and inhibit mouse brainAChE activity. The in vivo inhibition of AChE activity by norpyridostigmine reaches 72% at 10 minutes which is comparable to that seen with physostigmine (73% at 10 minutes). Inhibition by norneostigmine is less effective (50% at 10 minutes) and approaches that obtained with tetrahydroaminoacridine (57% at 10 minutes). These data show that both norpyridostigmine and norneostigmine cross the blood-brain barrier and that they are effective inhibitors of mouse brain AChE activity. These drugs could be useful in the treatment of memory, impairment associated with Alzheimer's disease, and other memory disorders.

TL;DR: In this paper, a thermodynamic criterion for aromatic and conjugative interactions is proposed for stepwise hydrogenation of biquinacenes and hexaquinacenes, and a set of criteria for stable and destabilizing interactions are presented.
Abstract: A thermodynamic criterion for aromatic and conjugative interactions is proposed. Enthalpies of stepwise hydrogenation of, for example, three double bonds are compensated for strain energy changes during hydrogenation. Strain energies are calculated by molecular mechanics. If the compensated values show a monotonic increase from bond 3 to bond 1, the molecule is conjugatively stabilized. If the initial rise is sharp followed by a constant ΔHh for bonds 2 and 1 and the molecule is cyclic, stabilization is aromatic. If the compensated ΔHh decreases, the interaction is destabilizing. By this set of criteria, biquinacene is unstabilized, triquinacene is homoaromatically stabilized, hexaquinacene is homoconjugatively stabilized, and cis,cis,cis-1,4,7-cyclononatriene is homoaromatically destabilized. New experimental data are presented for the biquinacenes (bicycloocta-1,7-diene and its hydrogenation products) and the hexaquinacenes.

TL;DR: An attempt to incorporate AIDS education throughout the undergraduate social work curriculum and educate students as compassionate, ethical professionals prepared to provide services to people with AIDS is presented.
Abstract: The article presents an attempt to incorporate AIDS education throughout the undergraduate social work curriculum. A two-tiered model of AIDS education is developed. The first stage focuses on students as a sexually active, at-risk group and provides information for their personal use. Building upon this base, the model proceeds to educate students as compassionate, ethical professionals prepared to provide services to people with AIDS. A number of learning exercises are discussed that can be integrated into the social work curriculum.

TL;DR: In this paper, a discussion of the relevance of self-disclosure in psychotherapeutic work with adolescents and children is presented, in order to demonstrate the importance of using a developmental perspective in understanding this phenomenon in work with a younger population.
Abstract: The focus of this chapter is a discussion of the concept of self-disclosure as it applies to therapeutic work with adolescents and children. This begins with a brief discussion of the relevance of self-disclosure in psychotherapeutic work with adults, in order to demonstrate the importance of using a developmental perspective in understanding this phenomenon in work with a younger population. It will also briefly review the positions taken by different analytic schools of thought regarding the therapist’s self-disclosure in work with adult patients.

TL;DR: Evidence of hepatic injury in s/w mice when concomitantly exposed to lovastatin and acetaminophen is provided, and Histopathology of the liver revealed centrilobular hepatocyte swelling.
Abstract: A subchronic, toxicity study of lovastatin-acetaminophen combination in s/w mice is reported. Oral administration of lovastatin in corn oil 30 mg/kg three times a week and acetaminophen 0.75% w/v in drinking water for 13 weeks resulted in significant increase in SGPT (ALT) in both male and female mice. Histopathology of the liver revealed centrilobular hepatocyte swelling. These results provide evidence of hepatic injury in s/w mice when concomitantly exposed to lovastatin and acetaminophen.

TL;DR: The Discussion addresses issues related to the use of the threshold measure in basic and applied cognitive research, explores the present findings about performance on fixed level trials at the computer-selected threshold, and examines the increase in duration threshold with the number of sequentially presented frames.
Abstract: PEST, an adaptive (tracking) procedure originally developed for sensory research, was modified for cognitive studies with the multiple sequential frames paradigm and a letter-search task. The program which controlled stimulus presentation was designed to track the frame duration required for successful search on 75% of trials (the duration threshold). For each of the three subjects used, the threshold increased as a linear function of the number of sequentially presented frames, which varied between 1 and 10. Each tracking run was immediately followed by 40 trials with frame-exposure time fixed at the computer-selected threshold. Performance on these fixed level trials was close to the expected 75% correct. The Discussion addresses issues related to the use of the threshold measure in basic and applied cognitive research, explores the present findings about performance on fixed level trials at the computer-selected threshold, and examines the increase in duration threshold with the number of sequentially presented frames.
