Abstract: The tight-binding method has been employed to calculate energy bands in ferromagnetic nickel. The basis set consisted of atomic wave functions for the $1s$, $2s$, $3s$, $4s$, $2p$, $3p$, and $4p$ states, expressed as linear combinations of Gaussian orbitals, and five individual Gaussian orbitals for each $3d$ state. The Coulomb part of the crystal potential was constructed from a superposition of overlapping neutral-atom charge densities, the atoms being in the ${d}^{9}{s}^{1}$ configuration. The $X\ensuremath{\alpha}$ method of Slater et al. was used to construct an exchange potential. Energy levels were calculated at 1505 points in $\frac{1}{48}\mathrm{th}$ of the Brillouin zone. The results are generally in good agreement with those obtained from other first-principles calculations. The properties for several positions on the Fermi surface are determined and compared with experiment. The spin splitting of the $d$ bands is calculated to be about 0.8 eV. A spin-wave reciprocal effective mass of 0.165 (in atomic units) is obtained.

Abstract: Complete blocking of the Schiff reaction applied after HIO4 oxidation is attained by 1%, 0.5% or 0.2% NaBH4 in 1% Na2HPO4 with a 1 min exposure, 0.1% NaBH4 requires 2 min. KBH4 was also completely effective in the same solvent at 1, 0.5 and 0.25% in 1 min. The solutions deteriorate on standing, so that 0.5% NaBH4 is effective in 1 min at 7 hr but 5 min is needed at 24 hr and is ineffective at 36 hr; 1% KBH4 requires 4 min at 24 hr when fresh, and showed deterioration in 2–4 days. Saturated (0.4%) isopropanol and 1% pyridine solutions required 10–15 min when fresh and showed deterioration in 2–4 days. No satisfactory results were obtained with 80% or absolute dioxan or with methyl cellosolve in times of an hour or less; even a 24 hr exposure was ineffective with 0.2% in 80% dioxan.

Abstract: LANE, IRVING M., and COON, ROBERT C. Reward Allocation in Preschool Children. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1972, 43, 1382-1389. The reward allocation behavior of 4and 5-year-old children was studied within the framework of equity theory. Children worked on a task with a fictitious partner whose performance they observed to be superior, equal, or inferior to their own. The children were then given rewards that their team had earned and told to divide them between themselves and their partner. Results indicated that 4-year-old children tended to distribute rewards self-interestedly by taking significantly more than half for themselves. The behavior of the 5-year-old children was consistent with the assumption that they employed the norm of equality when distributing rewards. No evidence was found to indicate that the behavior of preschool children is influenced by equity, the norm that mediates adult behavior in reward-allocation situations.

Abstract: Application of a comprehensive wave climate program to seven major deltas indicates that deltaic configurations and coastal landform combinations depend to a considerable degree on the wave power adjacent to the shore and on the river discharge relative to wave forces. Nearshore wave power is not correlative with deepwater wave power but, owing to frictional attenuation, is a function of the subaqueous slope. The subaqueous slope, in turn, depends partially on the slope and width of the continental shelf but primarily on the rate at which the river can supply sediments to the nearshore zone. River-dominated configurations result only when the river is able to build flat offshore profiles, which reduce nearshore wave power; where the subaqueous slope is steep, waves reach the shore comparatively undiminished and wave-built forms prevail.

Abstract: T HE case against continuous exponential growth in the physical coordinates of our economy has already been made [1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16, 24] but has not yet won majority acceptance. Rather than repeat the arguments establishing the necessity and desirability of a steady-state economy, I will confine myself to a critique of a number of counter-arguments and objections which have been raised against the steady-state view by those who remain committed to the orthodox growth paradigm. What follows then is a kind of catechism of pro-growth fallacies, sophistries, casuistries, obfuscations, nonsequiturs, question-beggings, and misunderstandings, which, if properly refuted, should indirectly make the case for a steady-state economy.

Abstract: Velocity profiles were measured in a stirred tank with a turbine impeller using a three-dimensional, pitot tube probe. A tangential jet model was used to describe the flow in the region of the impeller, and two-dimensional potential flow models and a circular jet were used to describe the flow in the rest of the tank. The tangential jet model accurately predicted the measurements from this work and comparable measurements reported in the literature for water and air, for varying impeller diameter and speeds and for different tank diameters. In the rest of the tank a three-dimensional, low velocity, flow field exists; and the center of circulation is not a true stagnation point. The flow at this point is tangential. The two-dimensional models only qualitatively described the flow in this region, and a three-dimensional model would be required. It was experimentally and theoretically confirmed that standard practice of using 10% baffles effectively controls the flow in the tank.

Le modele de jet tangentiel a predit avec justesse les mesures ainsi obtenues et celles qu'on a publiees pour I'eau et I'air, dans le cas de divers diametres et vitesses de roues et de diametres differents de reservoirs. On a trouve qu'il y a dans le reste du reservoir un champ d'ecoulement a trois dimensions et faible velocite et que le centre de la circulation n'est pas un vrai point de stagnation; I'ecoulement a ce point est tangentiel. Les modeles a deux dimensions ne decrivent que qualitativement I'ecoulement dans la dite region et il faudrait avoir recours a un modele a trois dimensions. On a confirme experimentalement et theoriquement que I'emploi normal de chicanes a 10% permet de contro'tler efficacement I'ecoulement dans le reservoir.

Abstract: Population levels of Pseudoplusia includens (Walker) were found to vary considerably among agricultural ecosystems in Louisiana. The cotton, corn, and soybean ecosystem was characterized by a dense larval population in late August or September.
Parasitism was inversely related to population density and to the amount of pesticides used in the surrounding area. Apanteles scitulus Riley and Copidosoma truncatellum (Dalman) were the predominant parasites, while Lespesia aletiae (Riley) was of lesser importance.
The fungal pathogens Spicaria rileyi (Farlow) Charles and Massospora sp. attacked the soybean looper larvae at different periods and densities. S. rileyi appeared in midsummer at relatively low population densities, while Massospora sp. was present only in late August or September in very dense larval populations.

Data obtained from 18 subjects with normal hearing are presented, and a relationship between stimulus intensity and latency of the N1 component of the acoustic nerve response is given. Possible application of this relationship as a reference in diagnosing hearing disorders is discussed.

Abstract: Stink bug-damaged seeds from 17 soybean varieties were separated into 4 arbitrary categories depending upon the amount of visual damage to the seeds. The categories of damage were: none or check―no visual damage; light―seeds showing punctures but without shriveling of the seedcoat; moderate―seeds with some shriveling of the seedcoat; and heavy―extensive shriveling of the seedcoat.
Soybean seed stained using a tetrazolium technique showed that with regard to viability the location of a stink bug puncture is probably more important than the number of punctures. One puncture in the radicle-hopocotyl axis of the seed can prevent germination.
Greenhouse tests showed highly significant differences among the arbitrary categories with respect to emergence and yield. A small-plot field test using the ‘Bossier’ variety showed no significant difference in yield between the lightly damage seeds and those with no visual damage, but it showed significant decreases in yield between the light vs. moderate and moderate vs. heavy categories of stink bug-damaged seeds.
