TL;DR: Intravenous glucose tolerance tests were performed in seven male volunteers under basal conditions and following α-adrenergic blockade with IV phentolamine and the insulin secretory response to the glucose load was increased by α-blockade.
Abstract: Intravenous glucose tolerance tests were performed in seven male volunteers under basal conditions and following α-adrenergic blockade with IV phentolamine. Phentolamine did not affect the fasting levels of glucose or immunoreactive insulin in plasma. The insulin secretory response to the glucose load was increased by α-blockade. Five minutes after the injection of glucose, mean plasma insulin levels were 38 per cent higher when the subjects received phentolamine than during the control tests ( p

TL;DR: Evidence is provided that these four varieties of granules represent progressive stages in the maturation of a single granule type and that granules without crystalloids are transformed into granules with crystalloids.
Abstract: For ultrastructural study of the formation and maturation of human eosinophil granules, bone marrow and buffy coat specimens were fixed with an aqueous solution of potassium pyroantimonate and osmium tetroxide and by conventional methods. The antimonate-osmium tetroxide method of fixation, which is thought to permit ultrastructural localization of sodium or other cations, offered an advantage over routine methods in that it permitted recognition of four rather than two varieties of cytoplasmic granules in human eosinophils at various stages of cell development. These four granule varieties, designated A, B, C, and D, differed primarily in distribution and content of crystalloids and antimonate deposits: A granules lacked antimonate deposits and cystalloids; B granules contained a rim of deposits but lacked crystalloids; C granules possessed deposits that were present in the peripheral matrices but not in the central crystalloids; and D granules lacked deposits but contained crystalloids. Evidence is provided that these four varieties of granules represent progressive stages in the maturation of a single granule type and that granules without crystalloids are transformed into granules with crystalloids. The results also provide evidence for the presence of an as yet unidentified pyroantimonate precipitable cation in human eosinophil granules.

TL;DR: One death occurred in this series and was attributable to extensive peritonitis secondary to gangrenous ileum twisted about a bolus of ascaris.
Abstract: Summary o 1. A review of forty-five cases of intestinal obstruction caused by round worms is presented. 2. Eosinophilia was present in only one case. 3. Initial treatment should be conservative, consisting of nasogastric suction and piperazine given via nasogastric tube, as well as intravenous fluids. 4. Surgery should not be delayed if signs and symptoms warrant laparotomy. In this series seven patients underwent surgery, and volvulus of the terminal ileum was the most common finding. 5. One death occurred in this series and was attributable to extensive peritonitis secondary to gangrenous ileum twisted about a bolus of ascaris. 6. At surgery, if involved bowel is viable, the worms should be milked into the colon. If this cannot be done, enterotomy should be performed and the worms removed. 7. Piperazine in recommended dosages should be given early in the postoperative period.

TL;DR: A chemical analysis of natural soils from which H. capsulatum had been isolated failed to show any common chemical factors that would explain the presence of the fungus in the soils.
Abstract: The growth ofH. capsulatum in soil is markedly affected by soil pH above 10 and below 5. No growth was observed on soil cultures outside these values. There was no definite pH range within these values in which the fungus grew more abundantly. A chemical analysis of natural soils from whichH. capsulatum had been isolated failed to show any common chemical factors that would explain the presence of the fungus in the soils.

TL;DR: In this article, a single straight capillary and a concentric tissue cylinder was used as a representa tive sample (the Krogh tissue cylinder) to simulate oxygen transport in the human cerebral cortex.
Abstract: Oxygen transport in the human cerebral cortex has been simulated previously by considering a single straight capillary and a concentric tissue cylinder as a representa tive sample (the Krogh tissue cylinder). The same geo metric model has been assumed for this study because of its probable accuracy and to allow comparison with previous calculations.Because of the nonlinear equilibrium relationship be tween dissolved and hemoglobin-bound oxygen (the oxy gen dissociation curve), a differential mass balance yields a nonlinear partial differential equation describing oxy gen transport in the capillary. In the tissue a constant consumption rate is assumed and a linear partial differ ential equation results. The tissue equation and the capillary equation are solved simultaneously, to account for capillary-tissue interaction, thus giving axial and radial oxygen partial pressure profiles for the total system. The Monte Carlo method has been employed to solve the resulting set of equations on a digital computer. TL;DR: Experiments show that a new kind of drug acts to prevent the formation of two types of thrombi, which may lead to blood flow stagnation and the plugging of small vessels with cell aggregates.
Abstract: This paper describes laboratory experiments which show that a new kind of drug acts to prevent the formation of two types of thrombi. The intravascular agglutination of the formed elements of blood under certain pathological conditions results in peripheral circulation disturbances that may lead to blood flow stagnation and the plugging of small vessels with cell aggregates.’ The causal participation of this process in thrombus formation has been described by several investigators under clinical2 and experimental3-5 conditions. Of the blood cells involved, special attention has been given to the

TL;DR: A theoretical analysis of the transport of oxygen from maternal to fetal blood is presented and distributed parameter mathematical models are derived which describe the convection, diffusion and reaction processes involved in the oxygen exchange.
Abstract: Based on the present state of knowledge concerning the anatomy and physiology of the placenta, a theoretical analysis of the transport of oxygen from maternal to fetal blood is presented in this paper. Distributed parameter mathematical models are derived which describe the convection, diffusion and reaction processes involved in the oxygen exchange. Steady state simulations of placental oxygen transport are obtained by solving the mathematical models for two cases. Case 1 is a simulation of oxygen transport as if it occurred from maternal blood flowing concurrently to fetal blood in a straight capillary. Case 2 simulated the process as if it occurred in a multivillous flow pattern with concurrent flow characteristic of each exchange unit.

TL;DR: In this article, a new theory of the time dependence of the birefringence transient in the Kerr cell following sudden removal of the orienting field has been examined and shown to hold only for spherical part ides and not ellipsoids of revolution.
Abstract: Benoit's theory of the time dependence of the birefringence transient in the Kerr cell following sudden removal of the orienting field has been examined and shown to hold only for spherical part ides and not ellipsoids of revolution. This observation is in agreement with the methods of dielectric dispersion and depolarization of fluorescence which yield two rotary diffusion constants, while Benoit's theory yields only one. A new theory is presented here which contains two rotary diffusion constants and reduces to the Benoit equation in the limiting cases of spheres and infinitely thin rods. Also the theoretical extensions of Tinoco and Ridgeway have been examined and compared to the resulting theory.

TL;DR: It was tentatively proposed that the product responsible for this inhibition of cell division in the presence of continued cell elongation may be cis-tetrachlorodiammine-iridium, which is quite inhibitory to the growth of Escherichia coli.
Abstract: SummaryWhen aqueous solutions of ammonium hexachloroiridate(IV) are irradiated with visible light in an ammonia atmosphere, a photochemical reaction occurs in which the complex (IrCl6)2- ion is converted through a less negatively charged intermediate to an apparently neutral species. Solutions so irradiated lose rather rapidly the absorption peaks at 416, 433, and 487 mμ and display a new peak at 325 mμ. Nonirradiated solutions are quite inhibitory to the growth of Escherichia coli, but irradiated solutions are much less so. Solutions irradiated for 5–7 hr markedly retard cytokinesis of the bacterial cells. It was tentatively proposed that the product responsible for this inhibition of cell division in the presence of continued cell elongation may be cis-tetrachlorodiammine-iridium.

Abstract: Case 1. This eight and ot~e-half-year-old Caucasian girl had progressively severer pain over the medial aspect of the left leg for six weeks. Physical examination was essentially negative except that the medial aspect of the left upper tibia was tender to palpation. She was diagnosed as having Ewing’s sarcoma of the left tibia on December 22, 1964 after open surgical biopsy. X-ray changes consistent with Ewing’s sarcoma were described on January 22, 1965 (Fig. 1). Treatment was initiated with 30 mg. phenylalanine mustard (PAM),*** an analogue of nitrogen mustard (HNs), using the technic of isolationperfusion. There was no immediate or delayed toxicity. This was followed with radiation therapy, 5,000 r. tumor dose to the entire left tibia in 27

TL;DR: It is necessary to alert both pediatrician and parent to the danger of storm and other glass doors and to the possibility of replacing easily broken glass, in whole or part, with a safety material.
Abstract: Six children in this pediatric practice have suffered accidental glass door injury during the last 18 months. Five of these accidents involved the familiar aluminum frame storm doors and four accidents occurred at play. The experience in this practice and throughout the country indicates a significant increase in the number of such injuries. The problem is thus defined as a distinct hazard of childhood. It is necessary to alert both pediatrician and parent to the danger of storm and other glass doors and to the possibility of replacing easily broken glass, in whole or part, with a safety material. In addition, there is a distinct need for legislation that will eventually eliminate unsafe glass in doors.
