TL;DR: The inverse relationship between the accumulation of hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins and the ability of the pathogen to develop in the host has been checked by the quantification, in infected tissues, of glucosamine, a characteristic component of chitin-containing fungi.
Abstract: Enrichment of the cell wall in hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein is involved in the defense of muskmelon ( Cucumis melo ) seedlings to Colletotrichum lagenarium , the causative agent of anthracnose. The extent to which this accumulation proceeds may be experimentally modified by treating plants with ethylene or growing them in the presence of free l- trans -hydroxyproline. It appears that the increase in the wall hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein mediated through ethylene is paralleled by an increasing resistance of the host to the pathogen. Inversely, inhibiting the synthesis of this glycoprotein in diseased plants is strictly correlated to an accelerated and more intense colonization of the host by the pathogen. In both cases, the inverse relationship between the accumulation of hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins and the ability of the pathogen to develop in the host has been checked by the quantification, in infected tissues, of glucosamine, a characteristic component of chitin-containing fungi.

Abstract: A logical calculus is developed with propositions taking their truth values in the set of fuzzy sets of [0, 1]. This fuzzy-valued logic is an extension of already known multivalent logics, and the associated set theory is shown to be that of fuzzy sets of type 2 on a given universe. Various interpretative functions are given for the usual connectives of propositional calculus, using extended “max” and “min” operators. Examples of inference are provided and a compositional rule for fuzzy-valued fuzzy relations is suggested. Computations of truth values for composite propositions are shown to be very easy. It is hoped that such a logic will be helpful in the modelization of approximate reasoning, in natural language.

TL;DR: The hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins secreted into the wall as a result of the disease are similar to those of healthy plants, and the extent of glycosylation of the wall serine decreases as the plant ages.
Abstract: Infection of muskmelon Cucumis melo seedlings by the fungus Colletotrichum lagenarium causes a 10-fold increase in the amount of cell wall hydroxyproline-rich glycoprotein Evidence for this increase was provided by studying two specific markers of this glycoprotein, namely hydroxyproline and glycosylated serine The lability of the O-glycosidic linkage of wall-bound glycosylated serine in the presence of hydrazine, was used to determine the amount of serine which is glycosylatedA large increase in the hydroxyproline content of infected plants is shown, but the ratios of glycosylated serine to hydroxyproline are similar in healthy and infected plants As far as these markers are concerned, the hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins secreted into the wall as a result of the disease are similar to those of healthy plants In addition, the extent of glycosylation of the wall serine, in both healthy and infected plants, decreases as the plant agesSerine- and hydroxyproline-rich (glyco)peptides were also isolated after trypsinolysis of the wall These (glyco)peptides include the galactosyl-containing pentapeptide, serine-hydroxyproline(4) This pentapeptide is characteristic of cell wall protein

TL;DR: An ultrastructural study of the intestinal absorptive epithelium in perch (Perca fluviatilis) has shown that the perch intestine can be divided into three segments: the proximal segment, the middle segment and the distal segment.
Abstract: An ultrastructural study of the intestinal absorptive epithelium in perch (Perca fluviatilis) has shown that the perch intestine can be divided into three segments: the proximal segment, the middle segment and the distal segment. The enterocytes of the proximal segment are found to be concerned with lipid absorption. The adsorbed fat gives rise to the presence of two forms of inclusions: lipid particles and lipid droplets. Enterocytes of the middle segment exhibit the typical ultrastructural features of pinocytosis; these consist of extensive invaginations of the luminal surface membrane and acculation of vacuoles in the apical cytoplasm. Exogenous proteins are ingested by absorptive cells from the intestinal lumen by a process similar to that described in neonatal mammals. In the distal segment the absorptive cells have few, short microvilli. Besides the absorptive epithelial cells, goblet cells, endocrine cells, pear-shaped cells, and plasma cells are occasionally found.

TL;DR: Observations do not support the proposal that the cAMP-CRP complex could stimulate transcription via some "melting" property unless its interactions be dramatically changed when it binds specifically to promoter DNA.
Abstract: The cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate receptor protein of Escherichia coli (CRP) binds cooperatively to single- and double-stranded DNA. Binding data could be fitted to the model of McGhee and von Hippel (1) and show that neither strandedness of DNA, nor the effectors cAMP and cGMP or the ionic strength (KCl) do change appreciably the cooperativity parameter omega (omega approximately or equal to 100), and site size of DNA. Instead, distinctly different slopes were observed for the linear decrease of log K omega (a measure of the overall affinity) as a function of log (K+). From these double-log plots (2), the number of cations released and the non-electrostatic contributions to the binding free energy could be determined. Binding of CRP to single-stranded DNA is slightly favored under physiological ionic conditions (0.15-0.20 M), but such a preferential binding is almost abolished in the presence of cAMP which increases the strength of the interaction of the protein with both forms of DNA. CGMP does not change the binding properties and interactions of CRP with DNA. These observations do not support the proposal that the cAMP-CRP complex could stimulate transcription via some "melting" property unless its interactions be dramatically changed when it binds specifically to promoter DNA.

TL;DR: In this paper, the Moller-Plesset definition of the zeroth order Hamiltonian and the Epstein-Nesbet perturbation were used to calculate the intermolecular energy between two identical subsystems from a preliminary SCF calculation of the supersystem.
Abstract: The intermolecular energy between two identical subsystems may be calculated from symmetrydelocalized MO's resulting for instance from a preliminary SCF calculation of the supersystem. Then each second-order energy correction mixes intramolecular correlation,R −6 intermolecular dispersion energy, andR −3 components. TheR −3 components disappear through subtle cancellations. The shifted Epstein-Nesbet energy denominators introduce an artificial second-order intermolecularR −1 component, which would be cancelled by off-diagonal third-order terms, as well as a bad asymptotic limit at infinite distances. TheR −1 artifact will also occur in strong symmetrical chemical bonds calculated in the Epstein-Nesbet perturbation scheme from delocalized MO's. These defects will occur in all variational approximate CI techniques which neglect off-diagonal elements between delocalized doubly excited determinants. These artifacts are avoided when using the Moller-Plesset definition of the zeroth order Hamiltonian or when starting from (SCF)localized MO's (even in the Epstein-Nesbet perturbation). The discussion is exemplified on an accurateab initio calculation of the Ar2 molecule.

Abstract: For a ground-level continuous release of a trace substance like 222Rn, for which the vertical profile of concentrations is exponential, a quantity, ‘equivalent mixing height’ h, is defined in this paper in the following way. If the substance were to be redistributed uniformly through a layer such that the concentration were to be equal to that at the surface, then the top of the layer would be h.

TL;DR: In this paper, twenty spirophosphoranes bearing a P-H bond have been obtained by the reaction of α-hydroxyacids or alkyl tartrates on tricoordinated phosphorus compounds.
Abstract: About twenty spirophosphoranes bearing a P–H bond have been obtained by the reaction of α-hydroxyacids or alkyl tartrates on tricoordinated phosphorus compounds. The stereochemistry is described. Intra- or extracyclic carbonyl groups, especially in the case of two identical ligands, increase the Lewis acid character of the phosphorus atom.

Abstract: 2014 Evidence for fast oxygen diffusion in the H and X high temperature phases of La2O3 is presented from neutron diffraction background analysis and neutron quasielastic scattering data. In the X phase at 2160 °C the translational self diffusion coefficient is of the order of 3 x 10-5 cm2/s and the mean time between jumps on neighbouring tetrahedral sites is around 1.4 x 10-12 s. These are typical values for good superionic conductors. LE JOURNAL DE PHYSIQUE TOME 40, OCTOBRE 1979, Classification Physics Abstracts 66.30H 61.12

TL;DR: The male Brachyptera braueri first introduces his epiproct into the vagina and after a long phase of stimulation, he deposits a spermatophore externally externally.
Mating, incubation period of the eggs, and first larval stages of Brachyptera braueri and Periodes microcepbalius (Plecoptera). The male Brachyptera braueri first introduces his epiproct into the vagina and after a long phase of stimulation, he deposits a spermatophore externally. In the genus Brachyptera, there is an interspecific correlation between the length of the filaments of the epiproct and the flagellum of the right paraproct of the males and the length of the canal of the seminal receptacle in the females. The eggs of B. braueri hatch at the end of 3 - 7 weeks, whilst those of Periodes micro cephalus hatch either 2 - 5 months after oviposition or one year after. The chaetotaxy of first-instar larvae of both species is described and illustrated in detail. The evolutional transformations of the first larval stage and the adult show an interesting parallelism, together with the cerci of the Nemouroidea and the buccal parts of the Subulipalpia.
